Star Wars is fiction, so try not to relate it to real-life too much. The Darkside of the Force is a powerful thing and it took over Anakin and made him a monster.
Don't think of it in the context of real life. Think of it in the context of this setting. Jedi literally have an insidious voice and power begging them constantly to use it... this power is incredibly tempting and it feels awesome to use. It's addictive, warps your mind and body, and has the very real possibility of driving you insane. The Jedi Order warns against the dark side for very good reasons.

@Sarafanman - I love the idea of Anakin fighting Windu, the only problem with that is that Windu would have defeated Anakin. While Anakin was on his way to being one of the most powerful Jedi/Sith of all time, he was still young and not at the peak of his power yet. Windu would have defeated him just as Obi-Wan did.
Had Anakin survived after being redeemed and killing the Emperor I wonder if he would have been held responsible for his crimes? Or would they just have waived him and said "oh hes a good guy now." Even if one falls to the Dark side one is still responsible for their actions.
@ginjaninja1988 I think if he had lived it wouldn't be the same. He threw Palpatine over knowing he would be killed with the lightning. When he takes off his helmet he effectively kills himself and completes his return to the good side of the force. His helmet represents the darkness, he casts it aside and dies. If he hadn't made that sacrifice- I don't think he would've been redeemed like he was.

WHen I saw this in theaters, this scene made my heart jump, I thought, "Oh no, not the children!" I was so shocked... It does a great job of showing Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, and it does make us perceive Vader in a different way, and makes us more aware of just how submersed in the Dark Side he was.

You do have a point, real evil Sith lords wouldn't care, but as someone who has actually RPed as believable Sith characters that can be a step (Which I didn't take, and thankfully nobody presented to me; I don't RP Sith who kill weaklings or defenseless until they're actually a fighting threat to me) but you never take a 'final step' once you go down the path of evil

If it was me as Palpatine, I would have said "Kill the combatants with REAL lightsabers, then hit the kids with stun blasts, wipe their minds, and take away their sabers."
Threat eliminated, kids don't have to die, and people can still actually like Anak- oh wait, already too late for that, fuck you Lucas. :[

After watching this, you know that being burned alive and stuck in a mechanical suit was thoroughly deserved for Anakin. In fact, it was almost too merciful. Obi-Wan should have killed him, it would've been thoroughly deserved. Is it any wonder he was too ashamed to tell Luke about his true parentage, knowing his father slaughtered helpless children and choked his mother to death? Would anyone honestly, HONESTLY tell Luke the truth knowing the atrocities Anakin had committed???
