This is an awesome video! I remember listening to my police scanner for what seemed like hours that day. I'd been taking a shower when the lights flickered, so I hopped out real fast and heard the siren next to PG Co. 1 go off. The guy across the street peeled out of his driveway headed to the FD. I remember PG asking if they could cut through Fort Lee to get around the traffic. This was my first brush with a tornado and I got bitten with the storm chasing bug. Thanks for posting!
I remember my dad and I were out car shopping that day in Hopewell when the sky got black as night. We passed by the Wal-Mart on our way home to Chester about 6 minutes before the twister ripped through it. Crazy to think about how close I was to it.
I will always remember this day, August 6, 1993. What was so surprising about this day was that no severe weather was expected that day, just rain and garden variety storms. But we had a tornado outbreak, in fact there was another tornado that hit near that area about an hour earlier that went unreported.
@xpressva Hey was the third tornado the one that was spotted in the James River before it crossed on land? I remember that day but some things are getting a bit fuzzy.
@charmed2284 I know what you mean. I lived about 2 miles from that Wal-Mart and never heard a thing. It never even stormed where I was. Just a little rain. Had no clue til my sister called me and told me about 30 minutes afterward.
@xpressva I live in Richmond. I thought I recall seeing in the Richmond Times Dispatch (and I would assume it would have also have been in other regional newspapers) of the funnel. I remember it being sort of ragged looking, not a classic cone shape, but pretty large.

All the damage cars was put on side of football field. Old Wal-Mart building was damage and had to level the building to ground. It is now Sam's Club.
i remember this day very well, well not the day of the aftermath but actual day because it was on my birthday i was living in Dinwiddie, Va at the time i just turned 8 years old then. In Dinwiddie in an old house i was scared i even flew under the bed and cried whole time yes i do remember that day as if it was yesterday because i thought that day would been my last day.
@kingnightro I too lived in Dinwiddie and was 8 years old as well. I remember this day like it was yesterday. It was extremely terrifying. This day traumatized me for the rest of my life. Everytime there is a severe storm, this is all I can think of and it causes me to have anxiety attacks. I stare at the sky waiting. My dad worked at Tarmac at the time and he drove his crane in a whole just in time to see the tornado go over him!! I too thought it was my last day.
@elisedmack It didnt freak m out ta ad when i got older bcaue ni got older i moved to Florida and i faced the hurricane the weather didnt bother me as much. It was just me personally, I used to live on plantation road in a haunted house i dont know if you believe in that but if you actually experienced it you would know its a fact.
I do miss it in Dinwiddie and currently i live in Sandston and i love it here as much as i love it there only difference this isnt country
In 1997 I started work for another walmart. I remember when doing the training models the one about tornado's had a picture from the air of this walmart. Downtown got messed up as well.
I was working a double shift at the daily newspaper in Petersburg when it was hitting. I remember hearing it through the freight elevator that day but we didn't know it was a tornado and that it was tearing through Old Town 2 blocks away! Had the radio on at the newspaper and we didn't have a clue that there was a tornado out there!
I was working at Busch Gardens when these storms hit. The attendance went from just over 25,000 down to about a 1,000 within 30 minutes after these storms hit.

This happened the day after I left VSU from summer school. I went to Wal-Mart every day because it was one of the first to be open 24/7.
If school wasn't over, I would have been standing in there that very day.
