I'd like to point out that "piles of money" tends to be more useful in helping your "neighbors" than does open-source software. That is, the money that Bill Gates donates to fighting malaria in Africa (money made by selling proprietary software) will do more good than giving GNU/Linux to people rich enough to own computers.
