I think Jim will be remembered for the quality of this speech as part of his incredible legacy. Got to respect the man. My dad was a Marine Capt. never said a word about it. If he did, I expect this man spoke more for him than he himself ever could. Thanks Jim.
Being that we are the smallest of the 'services'. We feel we have to be a little different. We love getting 'rides' from the Navy and anything else we can get, from whomever we can. But, we really know that we are the best and that we have to keep up the tradition from those that came before us.
"Once a Marine, always a Marine" yet I don't feel whole until I go back to serve. Anyone get that sentiment? You hear greater words like this and you think "let's go back.. just one more time."
You hear Lehrer's story. You don't have to be present, but as Marines, you know damn well it could have been you in his shoes getting peeled by a DI. You wouldn't want to be there, but you wish now you could say it happened.
Now this is what you call motivation. We can use more people like him to help shape this country. Hell of a speech, makes me proud to say that I'm enlisting in the Marine Corps next year.
Lehrer will always remain a Marine, like my dad remained until the day he died And I will always remain a Marine's daughter. Allowing no excuses for being a girl, he made me who I am. Thank you to my dad for being a Marine--and a man.
As a prior service soldier (US Army), it amazes me the espri de corps of the USMC. Never does a former soldier say, "Once a Solider, Always a Soldier.". However as Lehrer states, that no matter the rank, no matter the type of service, no matter the length of service those who have served our great nation and become a marine, always see themselves from that day forward as a marine. This connection to the corps is something truly to be admired.
Speaking as a civilian who came from a long line if Marines, and related to active Marines this man nailed it! "Once a Marine... Always a Marine!" This speech reminds me of every first-hand story I've ever heard of receiving at Quantico. Makes me wish I would have served when I could have, and may still should the call come. Outstanding.
I serve in the 3rd marine division and feel extremely honored that this gentleman gave this speech, I dont care what or where one serves in the corps this speech puts a lump in my throat and I cannot ever watch it without feeling a certain humbleness all throughout, I will never forget this speech and my childrens children will know about my 231st birthday on Nov 10 2006. Semper Fidelis.
A truly inspirational speech from one of my role models. Mr. Lehrer is and has been one of the best journalists I have ever had the pleasure of getting the news from.
Jim Lehrer is my favorite news anchor, and I watch his show every day. I saw this on television live, and it is definitely one of the best speeches I have ever heard.
15,770 views?? What the heck--I watch this every other week!!!! Semper Fi. Jim Lehrer knows how to do it.

guess it would have been quite odd, if your dad was a woman. "Thank you to my dad for being a Marine--and a woman"
