2.1. In most of Latin America, the “C” has an English "S" sound when it comes before an “E” or an “I”.
2.2. In most of Spain, the “C” before an “E” or an “I” is pronounced like the soft English "TH" in "through" or "think." Contrary to common belief, this is not a lisp, but is simply the way the letter is pronounced.
Please see Lesson 9 in my Pronunciation Course for full details.
hi! i was just refreshing on beginner spanish since it has been some years...i notice you are using the "th" to pronounce "gracias" (grathias) and "cinco" (thinco) and "diez" (dieth)...i'm just wondering if this is the correct pronounciation as my past instructors prounounced them as the "s" sound and i have never heard it this way before...or is either way correct? thanks :-)
I am really pleased that you are enjoying my daily Spanish videos.
28 of my 127 Beginner lessons and 36 of my 143 Intermediate lessons are available via my YouTube channel. You will find the full courses with written lesson notes on my blog. This is the best place to catch my lessons, rather than YouTube.

This is great news! I am so happy to hear that you can now understand your Grandma better. What an amazing feeling that must be for you! Well done indeed!!
I hope you continue to enjoy my video lessons and to steadily improve your Spanish throughout my courses.
Laura..thank u so much for your help..I am homeschooling my children who are 1, 4 and 5 years old..they have learned so much from you already, and it has only been a few months..but they are confident enough to speak to Mexicans waiters when we go out to eat and also anyone who they hear speaking Spanish in the grocery store& church. I am so proud of them, and my 1 year old daughter says "Hola" to you as soon as she sees you come up on the computer screen.. God bless you..& Thanks again
Thank you all for your kind comments and valued interest in my daily videos. Don't forget that the best place to watch them is on my blog where you will also find written notes to accompany each video.
I have a question, will native speakers of espanol will still be able to understand what i am saying if i do not roll my "R"? I say "Tres" delicate and never stress the "R".
I know you weren't specifically asking me, but since I am Colombian I figured I could answer this for you. Most of the time words like "tres" Spanish-speakers can understand you, but when it comes to similar words like "Perro" which is dog, and "Pero", which but, you would have to roll the R sound in Perro to differinciate the two words.
@JamieZamora Curious, but It has sense. Spain conquered Philipines long time ago (arround 1500) and I suppose you learn some words of our language. I heard that you use "cuchara" too :)
Gracias Laura! Ese fue un video informativo sobre el número! Mi clase es aprender acerca de los números habla ahora, por lo que fue útil para ver! Adios!

Hola, my video lessons and the free activities on my blog will give you a good start, but if you are really serious about learning the language you should also consider investing in some live online lessons with me as well.
Full details regarding live online lessons are available on my blog. In these lessons you can practice real conversation and delve much deeper into the language.
The letter C has two pronunciations depending on the vowel that follows it. When it is followed by A, O or U you pronounce it as a K. When it is followed by E or I you pronounce it as TH, however in some places such as South America and the South of Spain people pronounce this as an S. I hope this helps!!
Thank you so much Laura, my partner is Colombian and speaks good English but her family do not.
I'm due to fly out there in March and can now hold a decent conversation in Spanish with my partner on the phone.
I'm hoping it's good enough to speak with them aswell.
Best regards Richie

Hola,
Thank you very much for your comments!
In response to the last question, the Spanish letter “C” can be pronounced in two different ways:
1. When it comes before the vowels “A”, “O” and “U” it has a similar sound to the English "K" or hard “C". For example: “cosa” (“thing”).
2. If the “C” comes before an “E” or an “I” its pronunciation is slightly different depending on whether the speaker is Spanish or Latin American:

Are you from Spain? The accent, especially with the "s/c" sounding like a "th" is making me wonder.
I'm not a pro with spanish yet, so I cannot ask in spanish.

Buenas tardes,
I've seen people pronouncing the V in "nueve" like V not P as you do. Is that just a difference because of the city or country you and they are from?

hola, una pregunta,
it's acceptable to pronounce cien without the native "th" sound, no?
likewise - palabras such as noventa - you say like nobenta when i would pronounce like it is written. is that okay?
