only 4 seats abreast on the top deck, and such a big stair case, the top passenger seating starts a good 15 or so meters back from the cockpit. It just seams that there is so much dead space in the aircraft. The layout could have been better.

Most of the top section has 6 seats abreast. ¤ seats is first class. The A380 can hold some 800 passengers, depending on the layout the various airlines choose. Then there are the things that you see and don't see. There are no doubt crew restareas that are not really shown on the layout plans .

Maybe you just want to ask Emirates, they ordered 90 A380s.

The A380 is far from being inefficient, it has the lowest fuel consumption per passenger of any jet currently in service. Also, the A380 doesn't need special airfields, any runway that can handle a 747 or A340 will do.

The 747 is pretty big and needs a longer runway, but the 747 didn't do very well compared to the 737, which is lighter and more fuel efficient

No, a 747 or A380 doesn't need longer runways than other typical long range jets. Of course, the market for 737 or A320 sized jets is way bigger but you can't compare a long range jet with a short/medium range jet. Also, a A380 needs less fuel per passenger than a 737 and not the way round.
