At first, I was like, 'whoa! Pat, you're rushing the tempo of this beautiful Henry Mancini classic'. But as I allowed myself to settle down, only then did I realize if there's anyone that can rush the tempo and still maintain the originality & melody in a tune, it has to be Pat. 3-Cheers :) Thanks for this great upload. Loved it to the last click :)
I absolutely loved this film when it came out my favorite Audrey Hepburn/Albert Finney performances and the flash forwards and flashbacks well they were so cool and new to me in films... But If Pat could have done this for the film it would have transported it to a new place indeed. Thanks for posting !!!!!
Beyond The Missouri Sky is one of the all time classic (and really "timeless") jazz collections in contemporary music. If I had only five I could choose from on the proverbial desert island, this would be in there solid. Thas' right!
man u r soooooooooo!!! wrong!!! this kind of music must like you to listen if you want give yours ears to the great bassist Victor Wooten... but don't say that about Charlie Haden he has a GREAT Talent and touch...
the thing about Haden that makes him more than you want to hear him as is his choice of notes! while it might seem like he pedals a note for too long or does these simplistic chromatic passages that just go boomp boomp boomp boomp, the harmonic scenarios that he is creating while doing so are staggeringly brilliant. Like hi studied Richard Wagner more than Ray Brown or Milt Hinton.
Are we talking about the same clip? The harmonic scenario is created exclusivly by Metheney, Haden only makes his straight duty. And, chromatic passages - where ? It's all straight harmonical function.
yeah i suppose in this clip he is doing a little bit of a pedantic job, I wrote my response before listening based on the dozens of C. Haden albums I have listened to over the years. I am surprised that in this setting he is using a chart for one of Mancini's more well known tunes! he is a little more form over style but in general Haden's things is that chromatic pedal/walk.
I don't know which is the best music of Pat they are all excelent every song composed, each unigue in it's on way he is just a genius, these two have a great chemistry beyond Missouri sky is just one of my favorites so relaxing!
The connection between Pat and Charlie is symbiotic, and both manage to keep a great sobriety that makes all the genius and serenity of what is being played. Brilliant.
There is no better music for me in the World than Beyond the Missouri Sky. It has given me so much happiness. I missed the concert in Sardinia by 2 daays and I will never recover from it. Unless Pat and Charlie decide that they would like to come to Wales and play in the land of song.
you know sometimes i forget pat uses a pick almost seems like hes a finger and thumb guitarist as if the pick would slow the guy down he even admits hes unorthodoxed with the pick the way he uses it thanks to you and charlie for beyond the missouri sky that chemistry is fantastic
Actually I've been using the pick the very same way, ever since I started learning jazz guitar in Rome (Italy) back in 1985.
I've been playing anything from fusion, metal, progressive rock, classic rock, to samba, classic, new age, and I still love how much rounder the sound of the strings is, when you position the pick the Metheny way. On top of composing beautiful, amazing music, the man will get credit for his guitar pick position!
I love this melody, and also the movie, my very favorite by Miss Audrey Hepburn & Albert Finney. What a magic film. Excellent. I like this guitar rendition too.
Very nice medley of one of my favorite tunes played throughout the Audrey Hepburn/Albert Finney film of the same name. Sad movie but Audrey shines (as usual).
Metheny makes it sound great. He gets a clear, warm sound that is perfect the music he's playing. It just has a slightly more noticeable attack than a nylon string without a pick would have.
It's an acoustic six string with nylon strings. From the insignia on the headstock, it looks like an OVATION guitar. I might be wrong, as Mr. Metheny can afford just about any hand made ax he might want. There is a cord coming from the body, telling me it's electrified, but he also has it mic'd in front. I was always a 100% acoustic guy, so I'm at a loss regarding the electrification aspects. I always found it... electrifying!!! : I don't detect any sound changing gadget when I listen.
It's a Linda Mazner. Check out her sight online. Last I heard she had stopped taking orders. She makes all of Pat's guitars except his souped up es 175 which he no longer plays on the road. He's an Ibanez artist.
So sad that dear man, and great actor, who also taught acting, died of lung cancer in the early 70's. His favorite leading lady was gorgeous blonde Vera Miles. Paladin is dearly missed. A REAL MAN!
Thanks for this series!! I'm extremely fond of their duo CD. Doesn't allow you to stray offo or think technical about it, but focusses you on the MUSIC :-) Nothing missing, a complete picture.
thank you for the video,my favourite song ever, love the performance,Pat is one of the greatest musicians all over the wold and this movie means everything for me.

hey, anyone know the song on their album which has a chord progression like this:
Cm Ddim C/Eb C/E Fm
first four chords all quarter notes, Fm whole bar
C/Eb without E natural, just Eb, C, G
Those with the knowledge, please have the kindness to share : )

Using a pick on a nylon string guitar? Metheny is good but I seldom appreciate his tone. At least there's no chorus/
JonPhillipsMusic 2 years ago
I guess you've got your reasons for it, but I feel that a pick can sound quite nice on a nylon string guitar. this performance not being an exception.
It's funny how different tastes can be. I think Metheny's tone is one of my favourite tones ever!

It's ok to me if you like this bassist, but I don't like the guy at all.
Saw him in an interview and his attitude is: O, I'm so important!
