A lot of places in the States also spell "Theatre"I've been through a lot of states throughout the USA ,and seen this word spelled like this.I'm not American, but I can say that I've traveled a lot more than what they do in their own country.
The reason why words are spelled different in the English version is because the English Language is 40% old french. The Americans Spell words the way they are pronounced and in some cases pronounce words the way the are spelled Like the Word lieutenant which is a french word that's why in England we pronounce it as LEFT-TENANT .There are many examples of this in the way Americans speak and write English
@chap0syoutuification in all fairness, we did not 'create' the language. it has a long history going back to latin. Like the USA, we adjusted language as time went by.
@Hirotoro4692 Although you could say that Latin was formed through other languages. You could trace all languages back to caveman grunts. The thing is that we based the English language on lots of other languages. We created it in that sense. The US took the English language, removed some 'u's etcetera and called it American English.
Britain spell everything wrong and have no consistency in their language at all. Why have a U in color and hono, We like the U in glamour or contour? We take the UE off the end of analogue but not off of monologue. Why? Because we can!
@startrekwarsmixguy given the fact billions of people across earth speak english, it's too late for us to be 'picky'. It's now a shared, global language.
im canadian :D so i spell it colour and centre and um glamour isnt it? um but defence and not defense licence and not lisense (god that looks ugly) but i spell realize and not realise i dun like america :D i like britain more~~~ i hate it when i visited the states (my 2 visits) and saw it spelt color and when i read books and notice it spelt color, it really annoys me stupid americans, they dont know how to spell *tsk tsk*
@TigerFallOut It's spelling, get over it. If you don't like America, then don't come here and spend your money on us. Go to Great Britain instead. And if you don't like our spelling, then this is just going to drive you crazy... Ckoockin ckhickens in da kitchen. Or maybe this one... Never rocc red or we'll rocc gloccs up side ya head.
@TigerFallOut I was just playing man, gosh. I was making light of what you said. I love all nations, notice I didn't say anything negative about Canada. We need to lift other nations up because we all live on one earth. If people want to spell their words differently, than that's okay with them. British English was not always spelled like it was today!
@TigerFallOut Wow, that's the most ignorant thing ive ever read. We're stupid because we choose to spell words differently? If that's the case than every spanish speaking country is retarded as they don't always use the same sentence structure or wording as Spain. You really get annoyed over the spelling of a word? Christ! You're retarded.
Americans spell everything wrong and have no consistency in their language at all. Why take the U out of colour and honour but not out of glamour or contour? Why take the UE off the end of analogue but not off of monologue?
Why change the C to an S in licence and defence but not in silence and commence, or any other words?
@MrJST87 Because America wanted an identity of it's own. We even stopped celebrating Christmas for a little while after we gained independence. It doesn't matter how it's spelled, it all pretty much sounds out the same. We just kind of simplified it. Kind of like the Chinese did with their characters.
i don't agree with you. in the world exist british ,american ,australian and etc english.and if someone spells words not like u ,it doesn't mean that they are stupid or smth like this.it is just the different language.
by the way i'm from Russia. and sometimes i don't really get the reason u are so angry about americans spell or pronounce words differently
@MrJST87 youre an ignorant retard. The U doesnt belong in color, the word comes from colos and neither does it belong in honor which comes from honorem, contour should be contor but isnt in either for whatever reason, glamour /is/ glamor in american english however that comes from a scottish variation on grammar. English itself isnt consistent, words come from all different etymologies, some should be -ise and some should be -ize, in both countries consistency was attempted by choosing one
@MrJST87 analog comes from analogon, monolog should be the spelling as it comes from monologos. We didnt change a c to an s we changed a t to an s as license comes from licentem and in defense we changed nothing, the word comes from defensus. You obviously know nothing about the language you speak. Why does. Should capsize be capsise in british english? after all it ends in ize and the suffix ize is ise in british english. No, it shouldnt, origin, origin, origin
America has fucked up our language so much; it is no longer English.

I'm brazilian... We and the portugueses don't have any trouble about this...
Different countries, different accents and ways to write. Normal.
British and Americans are always in that kind of fight 'bout what of them is better.
What's really bad is write incorrectly... I think I did it in this comment... Or not?!
The people must accept each other... That's it.
Beijos, gente bonita!
(Ruim é ler o que a maioria dos brasileiros andam escrevendo pela internet. Cada um pior do que o outro! :/)

@Kramer02 yeah, well I could jump off a bridge on the basis 'because I can' but that doesn't make it a good idea.

It would be funny to go to Britain and write a paper to a teacher and have words as easy as this be marked wrong for spelling!

@MrJST87 When America gained its independence from Britain, changes were made to the English language.
American lexicographer Noah Websters made those significant changes.glamour is also glamor in American.
