Singapore is already overcrowded. I think people have started to think if "I keep giving up my seat, when can I sit myself?" People also disregard students carrying heavy bags and books and project boards in their hands - just because they're not old folks, you think they don't deserve a seat?

Bear in mind that only the reserved seat is reserved for them. Other than that, no1 else has a obligation to give up their seat. Sure we can talk about moral obligation and the "right" thing to do, but still, every1's doing it. Its like EXPECTING a student to give up a seat simply because they have received education. If they give it up, its OUR privilege, if they don't, then its just another day especially if they are smart enough not to sit on the reserved seat.
If the video was taken in 2010. I would guess not all of the passengers on the train were Singaporeans. There are about 3 million Singaporeans, 2 Millions are PR and Foreigners. Let us assume, approx. 1 million of the Singaporeans are either in school, or too young/old to travel on their own. That leaves you with 2 million Singaporeans who are outside their home. Excluding tourists, that leaves you with about 50% chance which the person you bump onto on the street or train, is a Singaporean.

This is not a isolated case... i just witnessed a pregnant lady standing in front of the reserved seat being taken up by a young girl.. pretending not to look. Its about our morals and ethics. But I've also witness numerous occasions where people gladly give up their seats to those in need. If i was sitting down, i wont hesitate for a second and just give up my seat whether she needs it or not or whether the bags are heavy or not or whether she's on the train for long. Its a matter of principle. I could have said something, but i have done that before and i was thinking this time round, lets just see the response.

This is not a isolated case... i just witnessed a pregnant lady standing in front of the reserved seat being taken up by a young girl.. pretending not to look. Its about our morals and ethics. There are many countries where the elderly are respected in the simplest form such as giving up a seat, whether they need it or not.

@rheographics - I would have to agree with you that yes, there are several occasions where people refuse to give up their seats for pregnant women and elderly. But I've also witness numerous occasions where people gladly give up their seats to those in need. But on the hind side, I've also witness cases of those ungrateful people who thinks the whole world deserves to give up their seat for them without any gratification.

Other than the possibility of having medical conditions which MAY prohibit them to give up their seats, there are many other reasons as well.
