  • It's good to hear this wonderful old classic sung just as a man would sing it. It was apparently written originally for a woman to sing. Many artists have recorded it and I like all the versions. Mac Wiseman has my favorite version as I have loved him for so many years. His unique voice and style make any song unforgettable. Thank you for posting this winner. - Paula

  • This is just one of John's great's-is he

    awesom or what?

  • I have been a Cash fan since 1956, thought I had got everything but thanks to you people who keep posting I realise there's a lot out there I havent heard.Keep posting please and thanks a lot

  • Oh, so good. They really sings fantastic, also the backup vocals is great. Johnny Cash is always a star. Thank's for this video :)

  • I never heard this! IT SOUNDS like very early columbia- prob " now that was a song! 1960?

  • I love it! Thank you so much for posting!

  • ......awesome!!! Jreb

  • After listening to this again, I'm pretty sure near the end Anita and maybe her sisters are doing backup vocals. I can hear anitas voice i'm pretty sure

  • I have the Anita Carter version of this (which is on youtube) on an mp3 file. I burnt it to a cd and I can't stop listening to her version in my car... so beautiful. she was just amazing.

Great version by Johnny here too which I've never heard

  • It in nice that they credit APD Carter but Ralph Peer

had almost everything the Carters sang credited to AP- cash for copyrights. AP only wrote a few considering the great number of songs they recorded. I have found a recording at Internet Archives predating the Carters.

AP Carter was one of the most admirable persons to grace this earth. His own songs range from ditties to sophisticated musical adventures. I wish I had known him.

I went to Poor Valley but at the wrong time of year.

  • Went searching for everyone. TB Ranson wrote this song in 1879. Rural Roots of Bluegrass. Take care everyone

  • If you watch the YouTube of the Chieftains w/Martina Mc Bride it tells you the song was written in 1879. I would truly love to know who wrote it. It has been sung by Kitty Wells, the Louvin Brothers, Mac Wiseman, and a host of other performers; my favorite still remains the Carter Family, especially knowing the circumstances of their failed love.

  • I have the Chieftains/McBride album and it credits A.P. Carter as its composer.

  • Great song, as always. Cash is King!

  • Love this song. I recently came across a web page that stated that it was written in the 1800's. Now I can't find that page again.

The original Carter Family recorded it back around 1928 or 1930. More recently, Martina McBride has done a great job with it.

Thanks for posting it. Where's the video?

  • that is the video but there is a video of luther perkins and june carter sing it together

  • @artnh that is true its a old irish song

  • This is the song that Luther and June sung together! I actually found the video and will put it up soon! Thanks for sharing Jreb.

  • ......WOW. Never knew Johnny did this song. Thanks for posting. Jreb

  • This beautiful old song is certainly done well by Johnny. He can sing a terrific ballad. This is the only version I've heard - so far - where the words fit the person at the wedding. I would love to know who wrote this song as I've just recently found it is an old old song. One that I've heard for years and I feel a kinship with all the musicians who have sung or played it with all their hearts. I wonder if either June or Mother Maybelle is playing the autoharp here. Thanks so much. - Paula
