You know if you call the billing dept of the hospital and tell them that you are self-pay, i.e., NO INSURANCE they will cut you a deal. When I was billed $528 for a blood test after heart surgery, I called and told them I was self-pay, the lady clerk said "well, send us $58" WTF no wonder insurance is so expensive! Hope you're back up to speed soon. It took me 60 days after by-pass operation.
For a European it's just really STRANGE to see people talking about "affording" a hospital or having to pay "medical bills". Also weird is seeing how this is simply accepted as a fact of life.
I lived for years in the US but I still don't get how people don't see the fundamental IMMORALITY of a system that lets you live if you can pay, and die if you can't.

I know how you feel... without going into details I had been very sick and and am still financially fucked. You have nothing to be ashamed of but I know how you feel. The most important thing is that you are on the path to recovery. When you have no insurance and get a hospital bill it really puts into perspective how much health care needs to be overhauled here in the states.

Hi Desertphile, You sound much better. Glad you made it through. Don't forget to negotiate those bills down. If you are uninsured hospitals purposely overcharge you. I've knocked them down by as much as 85% in the past. Negotiate in a calm but firm manner. Let them know you can't afford it and that the prices are outrageous.

absolutely superb advice, and a tactic that works as claimed. non insured typeically get billed twice what an insurance company does... 60 to 90% is a typical range. For you, given the extensive nursing etc, not just exrays or etc, maybe 60% hacked off the bill at the least.
re the pills... search that on youtube,,, 20 cents in chemicals to make a prescription that sells for several hundred dollars.... and in mexico for a fourth the money..from the same mfgr.

The pharmaceutical industry is the biggest in the country because the so called healthcare system is drug based because big pharma wants it that way. Taxpayers pay for a lot of the pharma R&D, and then we're gouged again when purchasing the drugs because we're told we're desperate for them. It's all rigged. We should always seek alternative care with the Internet:forums, Googling, books, etc. Glad to see you back and that they didn't kill you.

You would be surprised to know that Canada actually does have deserts. Kamloops in British Columbia is an example of a semi-arid steppe climate. The winters tend to be short with some of the driest snow you'll find in BC.

Over here, your direct costs would be: 1) a taxi ride home, 2) coins for the TV unit over the bed and 3 ) grapes, possibly bought by a visitor anyway. And you'd get treated for free if you fell sick over here on holiday too (sorry, they don't reimburse for missed flights).

You know if you call the billing dept of the hospital and tell them that you are self-pay, i.e., NO INSURANCE they will cut you a deal. When I was billed $528 for a blood test after heart surgery, I called and told them I was self-pay, the lady clerk said "well, send us $58" WTF no wonder insurance is so expensive! Hope you're back up to speed soon. It took me 60 days after by-pass operation.

From someone who has been unwell - this works when you are low on energy and need to get yourself going.
Soak in the hot tub until your fingers and toes are like prunes, and keep adding hot water.
At least one can of beer every day, two if you can.
Gentle squat repeat exercising.
( Also get yourself of those meds real quick no matter what the Docs tell you )
I knew a guy who had 4 heart attacks. Docs said he must not drink when on meds, but whisky helped him - until the cancer got him !

I know how you feel... without going into details I had been very sick and and am still financially fucked. You have nothing to be ashamed of but I know how you feel. The most important thing is that you are on the path to recovery. When you have no insurance and get a hospital bill it really puts into perspective how much health care needs to be overhauled here in the states.
