If you'll notice his name Janus is a reference to the two-faced roman god of fate Janus, probably because of his TWO FACES(his human one and his demon one) and also Janus was the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings, and endings. The remnants of him in modern culture are the month January and the caretaker of halls and doors the Janitor (probably cause he's gets his ass kicked through hall and out the door all the time :).

If you want to give interesting trivia, mention that his sidekicks were named after George A. Romero and Dario Argento, two masters of horror movies.

to be fair, it could have been added in the english translation, as unlikely as that seems. i vaguelly remember wa2 having a lot of (retarded) references to mythology and the like in the naming too

Both are distinct possibilities. Despite most games in english having a lot to do with mythology, it's because they're translated that way to make a little more sense. Japan doesn't really give two shits about other mythology since they have their own. We don't, so of course we have to borrow from other mythologies. And the Bible isn't mythology, it's a book of lies, so don't count that.

He was just making an observation and bringing up mythology doesn't make one pretentious.

Besides, he could have very well been named Janus for that reason when it was released in english. We don't really know why his name was changed as we weren't there. So it wouldn't make much sense to assume it couldn't have been a reference to roman myth.
