@Myself84 I played this with a friend a long time ago. This SE version has 8-player network/modem support. I'd remember there is also a split screen option, but not 100% sure.
@Fleshshredder You're propably right, perhaps I was spoiled by easy gameplay on NFS3 and following sequels or perhaps I didn't practice this one long enough. Also thanks for reading the video description, very few people seem to do so. btw. is there a video in YT beating tournament mode? When I uploaded this video I couldn't find one.
@einokeino303 I'll do a Lets Play. But I do some other games before. But this will be in german, because I'm german.
NFS 2,3,4,6 have a very easy AI. yes. In NFS1 you have to drive really good and to get the first place on Vertigo Ridge you have to have some skill ;) And I'm very impressed about the AI of nfs 1. They drive the good lines, they mostly try to get a chance to overtake to not get into a crash and they drive at the correct speeds the turns. I feel it especially on Vertigo Ridge. :)
@einokeino303 i've played it hundred times with manual transmission and a keyboard. it wasn't that difficult. With MT you have more stearing control. The viper for example is a 6 gear car but you never use the 6°
Also, what system was this on? The last time I tried this in DOSBox, it was too slow to run in high resolution, and got progressively worse even in low resolution, low detail mode, so it was unplayable. That was on an AMD Athlon XP 2500 (1.8 GHz), so not the fastest CPU I know.
I still have the disk - it would be great to get this running again.
@almitydave Thanks for your comments. I had 3 GHz dual core for recording this video and the game works fine without slowdowns. You shouldn't need that much power to play this game in DOSBox I think. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the "cycle" settings (press ctrl+F12 repeatedly to increase). I used something like 120 000 cycles while playing.
This game had it all - complex vehicle dynamics, pursuit mode, great cars, linear tracks and closed-course raceways, great sound fx, recorded replays... it set the standard for all racing games to follow, and frankly most of them, including many later NFS games, fall short.
This was about all I did in college. The Viper on Autumn Valley was one of the most fun things in that game. The best line around that track is tricky to find, especially that last corner (late apex is the key).
Hi, I get the game last week. But how to play it on Windows XP? I have installed it with DOSBOX but I can't start the game. When I'm in the installation directory in DOSBOX, I write "dir" to see all installed files. There's a "NFS.exe" file. But if I wanted to start the NFS.exe in DOSBOX, nothing happens. There is showing an info message: DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time version 1.97... And then nothing happens. What can I do? Please help me Best regards
Is there any possibilite to play this game in two players mode?

oh and 2nd. They DONT take turns faster than you can. You CAN drive the turns how the AI does.

Bullshit. The AI was perfect. I've won every race. You just need some SKILL to beat the first one.
Especially on Vertigo Ridge track they drive very very good ! (and yes good, not unbeatable !!!)

A true classic.
I still have this lying around somewhere. Seeing this makes me "feel the need" again :-)
What are you using to play it, I'm guessing DOSBox?
ncgqprophet 1 year ago
@ncgqprophet Yes, DosBox 0.74
einokeino303 1 year ago
@einokeino303 Ok, thanks. I'll see if I can get it working.
Knowing my luck, it's probably at the bottom of a box at the back of the closet though.
But what's an afternoon of digging through old stuff for nostalgia's sake :-)
