Excellent! Social Construct, no matter the category, is a very difficult topic to explain because so many people are quick to say "It isn't my fault." No one wants to take responsibility for affecting the actions of someone else, when in all truth, it is socialization that creates the ideas of good and bad, true vs. false, male to female, and so on. The key is to remember that no matter the study, the important thing is that you are thinking. Keep up the great work...
This was kind of difficult to watch. The music almost drowned out what you were saying, you guys were clearly reading off of cue cards or had tried to memorize a script, and you were talking much too slowly. If you ever get another assignment and chose to submit it in video format, try to do a good job on it next time.
It's interesting that they alluded to the man bashing that is currently popular in the mass media. They mentioned the Simpsons and Family Guy. You could also put th King of Queens in that category.
alright. all of your comments and questions are great. this was a class assignment on understanding how people begin to form their identities as children. i was observing theories & behaviors based on studies i read.
many of our labels and characteristics are formed based on behaviors we see through others. our parents teach us behaviors acceptable to social normalcy. this is not true for all people, however it is generally true and has been confirmed in many published studies.
how would you address the issue of both female-to-male and male-to-female transsexuality? we (transsexuals) typically feel that we are our true gender on the inside, even if the body we're born with doesn't match
If you study Jungian Psychology and Masculing identity theory, it is accepted that essentially a male identity is brought forth through a strivation to be something different than a man's birth mother. Men who become transsexuals and feel that they are the opposite might actually be telling the truth when they say this, but technically men who idtentify themselves a male by gender do so with the strivation that they are different than females.
what about female-to-male transsexuals? and why should I trust "jungian psychology" and "masculining identity theory" rather than the actual doctors who treat me? for one thing, not all transsexual people had two opposite-gender parents. some grew up in foster homes. and many of us know our true, inner gender from the moment we can first think or form words.
@TheDragonGuy You hit the nail on the head. Gender roles are defintely socially constructed, but gender identity is another thing altogether - a distinction that is rarely made in these PC gender studies. If gender identity were socially constructed like gender roles are, it would be easy to re-socialize a transexual and it would be possible to do away with gender identity altogether. But what is really happening is a challenge to the social roles of men & women - not gender identity itself.
Again, the reasons and differences have to do with general religious practices that have influenced culture and are present in everyones life whether they know it or not, regardless of not thinking you are religious. It is ingrained and taught indirectly.
This is of course in contradiction to the western viewpoint that homosexuality and men who take one accepted female gender roles is unnatural, because these cultures consider it natural and a part of life.
For example, in thailand it is commonly accepted that a katoey [that is what they call transsexuals in their language] is simply a reincarnation of a man who is being punished on account of past choices, and is therefore forced to be born a man that lives like a woman. They are considered to be female in gender and not male simply because they were born with male genitals, and are expected and encouraged to take on female roles, including sexual roles.
Eastern Cultures, especially asian cultures, do not have this rigiosity and since they are influenced by belief in the law of Karma and reincarnation, it is often not seen as signifigant that a person be given a specic gender role on account of their physical characteristics or the presence of male or female genitals, since a person would just reincarnate anyways and what a person experiences is on account of their samsara, samskarma, and karma as they shape their own lives and their future.
Western cultures are heavily influenced by Judeo-Christian tradition, which emphasizes time in a linear fashion and encourages the belief that God made people their gender and the way that they are, and that there is only one life and that there should be distinctive Gender roles that are given to a person at birth.
If you want to understand why it is that Western Cultures have the view that gender stereotypes are related to physical features, while other cultures do not believe this; it has to do with religious tradition and practices.
However, the video fails to address one important thing, and that is the debate as to whether having a gender means having a particular set of genitals. For example, in some cultures some males are considered to be female in gender and vice versa. This is not known or accepted to many westerners, because it is in the western culture to believe that gender roles are linked to having a specific set of genitalia. This is not necessarily true in other cultures.
I think that this video was very well done taking the age of the kids who hosted the video. Also, they seemed to cover their bases very well and were able to keep a neutral view.
Very well done. I would also like to add that our society encouraged gender separation, portraying thet the gender binaries as being far apart and not to be integrated.
