Jimmy Webb's composing; Billy Davis' voice...What a combination of talents. This song has always grabbed me in the gut. The girl's name was Susan; she was a flight attendant and Jimmy just wasn't good enough for her. It breaks my heart thinking of the pain he obviously felt.
I've been looking all over the internet for this song by Richard Harris. I played it to death in the late 60s and 70s.
When I saw there was a version by the Fifth Dimension, I scowled, figuring they could do no justice to a song that Harris owned.
Wow, was I ever wrong, and having egg on my face never felt so good. Billy really kicks ass in this rendition. So glad to have discovered it. I plan to play it very, very often.
DAMN, I have never heard this track before. WOW!!! Geedorah is precise wit the beat flow on the sample. Some of these" Ol' skool" classic" R&B RADIO STATIONS" (107.9 FM) Never play 5th Dimension shit like this. This is a beautiful track by The 5th Dimension.
@MsTexas73 It is a CRIME that most people don't know what a brilliant singer Billy was/is. Listen to his lead on this or Earthbound Prologue, Don't Stop for Nothing, Half Moon or even the softer songs like Leave a Little Room. Billy SOARS. Billy was second to NOBODY in the soul department. Too bad almost nobody got to hear him.
@djadvance22 yeah man, its so similar to the twin peaks theme. i dont know much about playing or reading music, does anyone know if its the same notes used in this as the twin peaks theme? i always presumed there was a connection between the two. are they completely unrelated, and just happen to have a similar arrangement?
@MsTexas73 There is a 5th Dimension fan site on Myspace with lots of Marilyn and Billy interviews--and I was pleasantly surprised that Marilyn names this song several times as possibly her favorite Billy lead. I thought I was the only one who noticed this song! Marilyn also said that Billy used to help her, Florence and Ron on their leads--showing them how to interpret a song and tell a story through the lyrics.
@Noodleydoo That shou'd've been a hit for the 5th Dimension but at the time, the record company was adamant on keeping them a "group sound" and refused to releaseANY solo tunes as a single and Brooklyn Bridge got hold of it and took it to #1. Two years later HOWEVER, the record company changed their minds about solos and released Wedding Bell Blues which shot up the charts.
@MsTexas73 Hi Texy! I didn't know that but I'm not surprised. Jimmy Webb thought Billy was THE GUY who had the voice to deliver a hit single--in fact the other members had to practically beg to get solos with Jimmy at the helm! Apparently the record company hacks felt otherwise. Sad. You are not lying about "Half Moon"--Billy completely owns that song (anyone who thinks the 5th couldn't rock out need to hear that)! By the way--what Texas town are you from? Austin, here. We should meet
@Noodleydoo And there were SOOOO many Billy led songs that should've been released as singles and weren't. His version of "Half Moon on the Individually and Collectively album is KILLER.
Got my cans on and this track is on repeat....Beautiful xx

Some really "kick-ass" bass on this recording. Compliments the Orchestral accompaniment perfectly.

@cyzerdoe76 Even Soul Town on Sattellite radio NEVER play hardly ANY of the 5th Dimension more obscure RnB type songs. What a shame.

One of Webb's most haunting songs--way ahead of its time. Billy's performance is riveting--dramatic--classic Webb.

Best song on the album. Reminds me of Webb's Richard Harris songs. Has to be Hal Blaine on drums (the Simon/Garfunkel drum pattern). Thanks. mg

Another example of Jimmy Webb's POWERFUL creative genius. Outstanding musical arrangment and intriguing lyrics.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
the naming is more inconsistent than obama's social policy. :P

he's right, it's Bezoin Gum. do your research, SH tracklists are often wrong, nature sounds's fault.
