OK, OK, Rob Trujillo is no great soloist. But he plays all of them Metallica - songs, he grooves and does, what a bassman should do: He supports the band, he completes the rythm section. Nothing else. He's not Billy Sheehan, but he is one great Showman and bassplayer. For example, I just celebrated 36 years of playing bass on stages and with bands around Germany - and I don't do solos. Maybe real short ones..... ;-)

That 's why I said a 1st year bass student with any decent training could kick his ass. Heavy Metal is VERY basic music & EXTREMELY easy to play. Trujillo fits in with very basic bass playing anyone could learn in a short amount of time. He is mostly hype and stage antics.

Back in the day when Rob played with S T and Infectious Grooves, you KNEW he could kill a Flea easily. He doesn't have that kind of opportunity in Metallica.They are both fine bass players. Rob can slap with anybody. I prefer Stu Hamm for all the chords and contra puntal tapping he does and playing full pieces of music that not many others attempt.
