Just got onto this band, starting to stray from the very mainstream psych, space and acid rock. These guys are amazing! Anyone got suggestions for bands I should look into? Cheers
@MilitaryAircraft101 If you've never heard the album Disraeli Gears by Cream, you're in for a treat. Just order it online and put it on loop. I could listen to that album for days! Another one is Grand Funk Railroad. Check out their Live Album. Peace!!
@MilitaryAircraft101 blue cheer, sir lord baltimore, captain beyond, randy holden population ii, vanilla fudge, the stooges (not exactly psychedelic but they are pretty bad ass heavy rock band), mc5 (again, not exactly psych but a bad ass heavy rock band) and if u want modern bands with a similiar style of rock then i highly suggest u look up radio moscow and graveyard. Hope that helped.
@MilitaryAircraft101 If you like Iron Butterfly, check out Captain Beyond, some of their members were in I. B. The lp "Sufficiently Breathless" is one of the best albums ever recorded.
This great tune was a "sleeper"...In a gadda da vida took the times by storm...I can remember hearing "Unconscious Power" for the first time on a turntable...Blew me away...Can't remember if I was stoned at the time...More than likely....
Yes. I remember this song on the L.A. airwaves, very briefly. It was in the spring of 1968. I remember that because I was playing my first year of Pony League baseball in Azusa, Ca. That made it the spring of 1968.
It's too bad most people just think of In-a-gadda-davida and not any other of their wondrous songs. There's lots more to enjoy.
As Jimi Hendrix once said, "music is the safest way to get high".
I really like the video and have known of this song since I was a young teen and spent some time thinking about what it meant . I am glad it survives with a decent video attached at that .who are the people towards the end pictured ?
Well then, my hat's off to him, as that is one he'll of a bass line on the bridge of this song. I use it to warm up with before I perform. Is your uncle still playing?
Well, whoever played bass on this cut was a monster. Go ahead, try to figure out, note for note, the bassline on the 'bridge'. It will kick your ass. I got it down, but it took me a while.. It may have been Jerry Penrod, but it sounds like a Lee Dorman line, who incidently, is a 'still' a great player and a heck of a nice guy. I met him while I was still in high school, back in 72, when he was backing up Spencer Davis. I let him play through my SVT for his show. He was an exceptional player.
@die420x They were both incredible on the bass. The US wasn't known for producing great guitarists back then, but I always thought that we had a lot of notable bass players, possibly because Paul McCartney and Motown bassist Jamie Jamerson were major influences at the time on US radio.
@TheSportSatellite There were several great American bassists recording back then. Lee was maybe the best. Also Jack Cassady of the Jefferson Airplane. The big influences at the time were Jamie Jamerson who was the bassist on all the Motown records and of course, Paul McCartney. With those two dominating the airwaves you couldn't help but absorb it unconsciously.
About a year ago I was listening to this song late at night and a big blue spark jumped out of my record player and hit me in the middle of the forehead, knocked me on my ass. Since then I've had near-constant hallucinations of demons, angels, and other astral entities around me. On that night I feel like Satan forced me to eat from the tree of knowledge. Beware the "unconscious power" of rock music, because it's really a Satanic power.
@koolbossjock Yes, you are right. Many I asked had never heard of it. I played my 8 track.....an awful lot. More than In A Gadda Da Vida ! Someone stole it from my car along with other 8 tracks. It took years of asking at local record shops, looking for vinyl or 8 track or even cassette. NOTHING! FINALLY ....(maybe my requests paid off)....It was released on CD !!! YEP...I bought it ! Still love the music!
I cannot upload this music here. WMG tells me even my 'private' trial video is "blocked worldwide." Youtube's upload rules seem to make absolutely no freakin' sense. And they might accuse US of taking some trippy drugs. Insane people in charge have the 'power' but are unconscious except of self. Nice video, great band and lyrics, thanks!
Yeah, this is a good tune! I have a video of these guys doing this song on TV back in 1968-69. Good post! And there is nothing wrong with your video. These videos take a lot work. It's good. What does that other guy prefer, a blank screen with print on it?
@TheGiuele This is a cool tune and an awesome band - I had all there early albums way back when. The psychedelic '60's total. But ... not heavy metal I don't think. The grand-daddy of metal is Hendrix. It is said that Pete Townsend once said his musics sounds "like heavy metal falling". Whatever .... I should try to put some of my vids to IB tunes ..... later
@FractAlkemist This is psychedelic music but that's what all new music was back then because by 1967 the psychedelic movement had taken over. Everyone cool was tripping (now it's about being gay WTF). Iron Butterfly had a heavier sound and their 1st album was called Heavy. Their name says it all. They were the progenitors. In 1969 Led Zeppelin came along with the same flying metal idea with a British blues sound. Then it took off.
@49kasey Well said. I knew that. Those were the days. I think I am still tripping (gold windowpane) and all this BS world now is just a bad trip I can't get down from .....
I agree with RockemStockem - Iron Butterfly is vastly underrated. For some reason the music critics have labeled them negatively and there is a Vulcan mind meld there with the hoi polloi.
Nonsense! They ruled in the 60's. They were very innovative. Unconscious Power is a great 60's anthem.
It always amazes me that Iron Butterfly is so often overlooked as one of the most progressive and Great bands from the '60's. They accomplished what their name said, Heavy with shades of light and lilting texture. Great Band, Great song,..Love it!

@mwngw I got to see them in early 67 in the Valley Music Theatre which was a round venue. This was their opener and it was mind blowing. This is a a great song but a shitty recording.
