  • Pandit Nikhil Banerji is certainly better than Pt.Ravishankar.He deserved Bharat Ratna

  • great video for us.

  • Look the video at 9:01 you can clearly see its Zakir Hussain.

  • There used to be a part 2 to this video, what happened to it?

  • pleas visit my sit i have a frind as sitar player

  • har pull ka alag khosh bo he pandeth jee esse pull ta jap tak ensan rahenge eska khosh bo mehsos karengi.

  • He is a Legend and a Perfectionist in sitar. I doubt a sitarist like him is yet to come. What intrigue details he has done!

  • he & Ravi Shankar ji differ in aestetic level..the same difference that was in Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan & 'Ustadon ke Ustad' Ustad Amir Khan Sahab.

  • How could anyone not like this? This is amazing. This is Nikhil Banerjee.

  • awesome! Nikhil is an artist!.......peace to all......

  • wow very beautifull. mashallah

  • Just think, a brilliant, introvert ,saintly Pt.Nikhil Banerjee ,who died 24 years ago, wouldn't reach our ears had this music not popularized by the smart, extrovert ,grandly Pt.Ravi Shankar (& Ust.Ali Akbar) in the west.

They all are Greats ...let us not make anyone up or down.....they all are musicians rarely born...

  • @hulisautikai pl don't comment like that.....Arijit1 has expressed his views.....and don't forget that Pt.Ravi Shankar is a Bengali too, Baba Ust.Allauddin Khan, Smt.Annapurna Devi,Ust.Ali Akbar Khan, Pt.Nikhil Banerjee, Ust. Aashish Khan all are "BONG"s!!

  • wah nikhilji wah.. we are unlucky that we lost you so early..

  • The two masters, Ravi and Nikhil, Did thier own music, from thier own brains, ears, and spirits, and cannot really be compared as in a competition. It could be that more people have an ear or "like Spirits" to one over the other, but I like them both.

Maybe one day I can play similar.

  • can anyone tell me why I cant see my comment? It shows comment removed. However i found it after clicking the 'See all'

  • Simply outstanding.. Nikhilda made the Sitar 'sing' ..

  • That Nikhil Banerjee is sweeter than Ravi Shankar is the opinion of most. Also listen to Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Halim Zafar Khan (the opposite is, with all his technical excellence, Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee.)

  • Impresionante, música transportadora.

  • Does anybody know what tala is that?

  • dude thats teentaal.16 beats

  • Thanks dude

  • is taal or tala simular to the speed of a song? I just started to listen, so have mercy! hahaha

  • taal is the beat cycle

most western music (and this particular tala) follows a 16 beat cycle divided 4-4-4-4 (try to count along with the music

In Indian Classical music talas can have anywhere from 5 to 16 beats ( most commonly)

  • thank you very much! have a nice day:D

  • Nikhil Da learned from many great teachers including my Guru Radhika Mohan Maitra. This gat is in the Gulam Ali Khan sarode Gharana Style. The gat in Khambaj is one I have also learned in this tradition. I believe he also studied with Jon Gomesh (student of Enayat Khan) and possibly with Mushtaq Ali Khan. It was after this training that he studdied with Ali Akbar and Allaudin Khan.

  • oh you know so much...

  • name : DSong plx

  • The best in my worthless opine. You have your Vilayat Khan and Ravis. Give me Baba Banarjee and I am all gravy baby.

  • Pt Nikhil Banerjee was the best overall sitar maestro - his raagdari was awesome.

Too bad he died so suddenly

  • Fantastic music. Too bad the video wasn't better quality.Zakir Hussain is probably the greatest tabla player ever!!

  • Pandit Nikhil Banerjee received lessons from the great Allaudin Khan, father of the late Ustad Alli Akbar Khan and spirirual father to Alli Akbar Khan's best man, Pandit Ravi Shankar.

  • nikhil did take a few lessons from ravi shankar in the late 1940s in calcutta .... before going to maihar ....

  • At times I think that most of these great musicians are underrated. I think it is twice harder to get to their level compared to mastering the modern kind of music that is more popular these days.

  • @giriisindahouse thats the reason why it is popular..

  • According to Zakirji (if my memory serves me right... I asked him a couple of years ago), this is from the Festival of (from?) India, San Francisco. Nikhilbabu has a published Shyam Kedar recording from the FoI, 1985, so this might be the same concert (there is a horrible video clip of the SK somewhere as well).

  • I'm not sure this is the same concert as Shyam Kedar, since the credits to that CD states that it was from a concert in Canada and there's no tanpura player in that concert, while there is one in this recording of Khammaj. By the way, concerning the tabla player, having watched both Zakir and Anindo play (on video or live), I think the bodily movements suggest that it's definitely Zakir here.

  • @rlwk1154: First, that CD is mislabelled -- see the entry for SNCD 71294 in the NB discography on raga [dot] com (YouTube won't let me post the direct link). Second, I'm pretty sure there's a tanpura in the SK -- it blends well with the sitar (appropriately enough) but you can hear the repeated drone.

I do agree with you that it's Zakirji, though -- that's been confirmed by the man himself :).

  • The Khamaj gat is a very old one played by many instrumental traditions.

  • Zakir's has got some FAST hands! This guy is incredible. As for Nikhil.....brilliant!

  • great, thanks for posting.

  • Rare performance on web, though picture and sound quality is bad.

its a sort of raag-mala with many ragas performed in the single scope of performance from the maestro.

  • wah wah, bohut acchaah. too bad about the poor sound quality

  • Great Sitar and Tabla Combination!

  • Simply spellbinding I love it. Im going to a concert tomorrow for a tribute to Nikhil Banerjee. And Zakir rips it.

That is Zakir Hussain. You can tell in his expression, his hand posture and the way he spontaneously improvises with Nikhil. And No there aren't any glasses. The way camera distorts makes it look like Zakir has glasses.

  • Thanks for posting. I admire Ravi Shankar for the brilliant students he has produced such as this guy.

  • Correction, Nikhil Banerjee is no disciple of Ravi Shankar. Initially he learnt from several individuals such as Mushtaq Ali Khan, Radhika Mohan Maitra, and Birendra Kishore Roychoudhury. Subsequently he went to Maihar and trained under Baba Allauddin Khan. Post-Maihar, he was guided by Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi. He's also claimed to be deeply influenced by the vocalist Amir Khan.

  • Who is this guy who keeps posting that Nikhil Banerjee is the student of Ravi Shankar? Dude, what's your problem? These are two great stars in the firmament of Indian music. Both are equal.

  • Actually Nikhil was same gharanna as Ravi but Nikhil also took talim from Ali Akbar. Nikhil in the beginning started talim with his father

  • Thankyou so much for posting, this is undefinable beauty, namaskar

  • ''''s

  • i would say the Ravi shankar is a great player but i dont think his sound is as melodious as Nikhil Banerjee's... I appreciate Nikhil Benerjee's music more than Ravi Shankar.

  • @Arijit1 Why, ofcourse! You clannish bong idiot.

  • @hublisautikai

What saikat said was absolutely right. You seem to be another of those anti bengali assholes.

Keep your parochial comments to yrself and shut up!

  • @Arijit1

    I truly agree with you.

  • @Arijit1 just 100% agreement :)

  • You are right I could here Raag Darbari. Raag Darbari by Amjad Ali Khan is my alltime favourite of Indian Music. Great video ....

  • priceless vid, thanks for posting

  • سو فيصد ذاکر

  • is he merging waltz in teental ? what is it called? it sounds very playful.

  • 100 percent Zakir... doubtless...

  • observe at 8:30 secs of this clip..its clear the tabla player is not wearin any glasses and its Zakir bhai..not just the video, but the sound and the style has his signature on it...

  • I believe this is Raga Suha Kanada or Suha Sughrai...

  • dude-this is misra khammaj

  • this ragmala in khammaj and goes to soha kanra not suha sugra-that has shudd Dha in it and this performance does not

  • I apologize- I have not ventured into the Khammaj realms yet...

  • he is playing ragmala in khammaj-soha is there

  • The initial is Khammaj and moves onto A Suha Kanada. No Komal Dhaivat so it is not Darbari.

    The last I don't recognize...

  • no doubt thats zakir..there should no question about it.

  • I love this video. Yes the sound is not the best, but the melody and rhythmic response are both so lovely. You cannot help but fall in love with the performance. No one is like Banerjee. Every time I hear one of his performances, it is a revelation.

  • Hey that is zakir. not anindo chatterjee

  • Great video, EXCEPT that is not Zakir, it's Nikhil's longtime tabla player, Anindo Chatterjee. Notice that he is wearing glasses, Zakir doesn't wear them.

  • True. He is Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. His playing style is different from Ustadji's.

  • Yes, he is Anindo Chaterjee, not Zakir Hussain.

  • this is a superb blend

    the 2 masters

  • NIKHIL BANNERJEE IS A GREAT PLAYER

  • Incredible.

This is true indian classical music which is very rare now.

People try to copy him but they can't take out as much feeling and depth as he could.

  • The sound quality is bad.

However great to see these two masters together performing/

  • Good to see older videos of Zakir Ji as you can witness the early style of playing which is based more on the style of playing of Abba Ji. Makes you realise the maturity and versatile playing of Zakir Ji now! Such a wonderful and unmatched progress!

  • My god. The man is a true saint. This kind of footage is a real treasure. Its so rare to see him. I only wish I were in the audience. His Khamaj is so masterful!

  • His touch is so light, but his feeling so deep! A true genius.

  • what an incredible sound. Nikhil Banerjee's inventive playing was truly mindblowing.

  • Thanks much. Getting to see Nikhilbabu and Zakir together is a treat!

  • No one plays the sitar quite like the late great Nikhil Banerjee. No one touches your heart with his strings more than he does. Thank you for this beautiful ragamala!

    Bansuriraj

  • nikhil banerjee is the deepest that really thouches the soul in all levels.

  • I never thought I'd ever see a video of these two greats together....Thank you!

  • what is the name of that instrument on the right of the screen please???

  • Sitar on right played by Nikhil Ji.

Tabla on left played by Zakir Ji.

  • if you mean the one in the background, it's called a tanpura, and it's what makes the shimmery drone sound you hear in lots of indian music. Basically anyone can play it, it's just tuned in octaves of the root note and fifths above it, and it's just slowly strummed.

  • its a part of raag khammaj based ragmala ... and among other ragas embeded was darbari which we have in this clipping ... the switching is brilliant i beleive u'll agree

  • im guessing either this is a part of a raagmala or some light-clasical bandish.. I could be incorrect..

  • this is seriously great, do they switch ragas in the middle? definitly change from shuddah ga to komal ga

  • i must say...you have the greatest collection i have ever seen on the net!!:D
