Just think, a brilliant, introvert ,saintly Pt.Nikhil Banerjee ,who died 24 years ago, wouldn't reach our ears had this music not popularized by the smart, extrovert ,grandly Pt.Ravi Shankar (& Ust.Ali Akbar) in the west.
They all are Greats ...let us not make anyone up or down.....they all are musicians rarely born...
@hulisautikai pl don't comment like that.....Arijit1 has expressed his views.....and don't forget that Pt.Ravi Shankar is a Bengali too, Baba Ust.Allauddin Khan, Smt.Annapurna Devi,Ust.Ali Akbar Khan, Pt.Nikhil Banerjee, Ust. Aashish Khan all are "BONG"s!!
The two masters, Ravi and Nikhil, Did thier own music, from thier own brains, ears, and spirits, and cannot really be compared as in a competition. It could be that more people have an ear or "like Spirits" to one over the other, but I like them both.
That Nikhil Banerjee is sweeter than Ravi Shankar is the opinion of most. Also listen to Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Halim Zafar Khan (the opposite is, with all his technical excellence, Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee.)
"is taal or tala simular to the speed of a song?"
No, the taal indicates how many beats in one cycle. The three most basic speeds are vilambit (slow), madyam (medium) and drut (fast). In all of the speeds they will begin at a slower aspect of that speed then gradually speed up over time. This vid is drut (fast) teental. Notice how muh faster it gets as it progreses, but it is all still "drut teental".
Nikhil Da learned from many great teachers including my Guru Radhika Mohan Maitra. This gat is in the Gulam Ali Khan sarode Gharana Style. The gat in Khambaj is one I have also learned in this tradition. I believe he also studied with Jon Gomesh (student of Enayat Khan) and possibly with Mushtaq Ali Khan. It was after this training that he studdied with Ali Akbar and Allaudin Khan.
Pandit Nikhil Banerjee received lessons from the great Allaudin Khan, father of the late Ustad Alli Akbar Khan and spirirual father to Alli Akbar Khan's best man, Pandit Ravi Shankar.
At times I think that most of these great musicians are underrated. I think it is twice harder to get to their level compared to mastering the modern kind of music that is more popular these days.
According to Zakirji (if my memory serves me right... I asked him a couple of years ago), this is from the Festival of (from?) India, San Francisco. Nikhilbabu has a published Shyam Kedar recording from the FoI, 1985, so this might be the same concert (there is a horrible video clip of the SK somewhere as well).
I'm not sure this is the same concert as Shyam Kedar, since the credits to that CD states that it was from a concert in Canada and there's no tanpura player in that concert, while there is one in this recording of Khammaj. By the way, concerning the tabla player, having watched both Zakir and Anindo play (on video or live), I think the bodily movements suggest that it's definitely Zakir here.
@rlwk1154: First, that CD is mislabelled -- see the entry for SNCD 71294 in the NB discography on raga [dot] com (YouTube won't let me post the direct link). Second, I'm pretty sure there's a tanpura in the SK -- it blends well with the sitar (appropriately enough) but you can hear the repeated drone.
I do agree with you that it's Zakirji, though -- that's been confirmed by the man himself :).
I like to feel sexy....knowing someone is watching me ..wanting me...turns me on!BADLY! I like to flirt and pose..and sometimes i like to get WILD! how? ..he he..come in video and youll see:-)) maybe u can teach me something..or maybe i will ! come visit me at _ MeetYourFling (.COM) _ my user-id there is clementine-cwfh chat soon on cam :-) orjycxy
Simply spellbinding I love it. Im going to a concert tomorrow for a tribute to Nikhil Banerjee. And Zakir rips it.
That is Zakir Hussain. You can tell in his expression, his hand posture and the way he spontaneously improvises with Nikhil. And No there aren't any glasses. The way camera distorts makes it look like Zakir has glasses.
Correction, Nikhil Banerjee is no disciple of Ravi Shankar. Initially he learnt from several individuals such as Mushtaq Ali Khan, Radhika Mohan Maitra, and Birendra Kishore Roychoudhury. Subsequently he went to Maihar and trained under Baba Allauddin Khan. Post-Maihar, he was guided by Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna Devi. He's also claimed to be deeply influenced by the vocalist Amir Khan.
Who is this guy who keeps posting that Nikhil Banerjee is the student of Ravi Shankar? Dude, what's your problem? These are two great stars in the firmament of Indian music. Both are equal.
i would say the Ravi shankar is a great player but i dont think his sound is as melodious as Nikhil Banerjee's... I appreciate Nikhil Benerjee's music more than Ravi Shankar.
observe at 8:30 secs of this clip..its clear the tabla player is not wearin any glasses and its Zakir bhai..not just the video, but the sound and the style has his signature on it...
I love this video. Yes the sound is not the best, but the melody and rhythmic response are both so lovely. You cannot help but fall in love with the performance. No one is like Banerjee. Every time I hear one of his performances, it is a revelation.
Great video, EXCEPT that is not Zakir, it's Nikhil's longtime tabla player, Anindo Chatterjee. Notice that he is wearing glasses, Zakir doesn't wear them.
Good to see older videos of Zakir Ji as you can witness the early style of playing which is based more on the style of playing of Abba Ji. Makes you realise the maturity and versatile playing of Zakir Ji now! Such a wonderful and unmatched progress!
My god. The man is a true saint. This kind of footage is a real treasure. Its so rare to see him. I only wish I were in the audience. His Khamaj is so masterful!
No one plays the sitar quite like the late great Nikhil Banerjee. No one touches your heart with his strings more than he does. Thank you for this beautiful ragamala!

so much practice Nikhil Banerjee must have put in to reach where he ultimately reached! wonderful! beautiful ragamala!
This reminds me of another beautiful ragamala by another wonderful musician I like - Shahid Parvez.

is taal or tala simular to the speed of a song? I just started to listen, so have mercy! hahaha
mistamoweed 2 years ago
taal is the beat cycle
most western music (and this particular tala) follows a 16 beat cycle divided 4-4-4-4 (try to count along with the music
In Indian Classical music talas can have anywhere from 5 to 16 beats ( most commonly)
