WHY are most general Metal (IN GENERAL ie. Speed, heavy, thrash etc.) bands ALWAYS associated with like, the dark age or mythological and folklore? (IE. warriors, magic, swords)

Keep in mind I know nothing about metal, I don't really like metal, I don't hate it, I just don't listen to it all the time.
