yes for a brief moment in time- 1967-1971 or so- it was cool to a hippie. the concerets were fun, not alot of rules. lots of sex. very little consequences.
everything today in the youth culture is a relection ( sometimes distorted) of that beautiful time. but it is long gone. and the kids today may glimpse it a bit..the purity of the times. replaced today by greed, tattoos, nasty drugs like meth and a viscious mean society which has over loaded the planet.
First time hearing this song, thanks for the upload. Very interesting tune, I greatly enjoyed it! The female singer for Jefferson Airplane had such a great, hypnotic voice.
Haven't also just read "Stranger in a Strange Land" recently, I love how they snuck in the "water brothers" bit. Made me smile. :D
Now I am in my 60s. The person inside me is still living/ remembering the 60s and 70s-- but my grey hair and wrinkles tell me I'm not young any more. I wish I was born fifty years early, so I could know this wonderful band in its prime... i would have breath the air of the sixties and seventies in America or in England.. I wold have been to woodstock... anyway I could have understand better the main themes of this splendid song... really wonderful!
I got this album when it came out- and it pretty much changed my life. I was 13, and just the line "it breaks all the rules" was an ah ha moment. You didn't have to follow the straight and narrow- try something new- be yourself. As an emerging musician and creative person it showed me an opening into another Universe- you are the crown of creation. It may sound dated, but how many people today are extolling young people to change the world, to become a positive force for change? Haunting.

this was a David Crosby songs that the Byrds recorded, but never officially released. Its on as a bonus track on "Notorious Byrd Brothers" Im not sure if CSN recorded it in the studio, they may have, but they sang it live often, back in the day. I prefer this version, actually, although I like both
The Summer of 1967 & 1968, the Summer's of Love.....we lived our own unique lives, we broke the bands of our daily boring lives and it set us free...You can't do that it breaks all the rules.....No other time since has life been equal to what we did then.
A little bit of heaven when the years ahead and the possibilities seemed limitless.
Grace's voice here is mesmerizing and I think this is in David Crosby's top 5 compositions. Even if from the late 60's before many of us had to really grow up, this is powerful music for the here and now...
this has been my favorite song since it was first released. Much better version than the Byrds original. Tom Robbins observed that of all the love songs ever written, this is the only one that is truly different. Maybe the fact that I was reading Robert Rimmer (Harrad Experiment, Rebellion of Yale Marat, Proposition 31) had something to do with how it appealed to me. And Jorma's guitar work is real nice.

once there was gina, debbie, and me. we had fun together. those days could have gone on forever, but i would be dead now from all the wine. grace had such a beautiful voice then. i often wonder what became of my friends.
In many ways this song is as acceptable now as it was back then. The element that love was universal, and could be mutual regardless of genders of the partners was part of finding ones self. Triads ( or beyond) are always an emotional challenge. Suggested reading- Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein
I was onstage with Grace at Fillmore West and we found that we share the same birthday, but...alas, it did not lead into a special Triad....oh well..........peace, G
The late 60s and early 70s were the best of times. Thank you for bringing it back to me. I remember loving so many people and dont mean sex...Best was with my best friend. Didnt realize I was gay at the time and her kiss was so fantastic. It is/was my most cherished memory and this song was playing at the time.
honestly, last comment tonight...her voice moves me more than Barack Obama's speeches, and da Prez can lay it out... but he don't mean what he says, least not based on what he's done... I mean, in the campaign, he sounded like JFK, MLK and RFK all rolled into one! Then he gets into office with a super majoriy and sells us out to the insurance companies??? I hope that I am not here when the people rise up and demand their rights, revolution is for the young! I've had my share of teargas!
one final point, this was recorded about 40 years ago, it is entirely possible that Grace would like nothing more than to be left alone, for whatever reason...I, for one, can respect that, pay my respects to the awesome musicians with whom you were associated, say Thank You one more time... sha, right! get up off yo butt gal, lead us on like in the old days when you was what you was before you became famous... I mean "famous cop outs of the 20th century" Bob Dylan and Grace Slick? Please, no!
umm, y'all got that I was talkin' about John Lennon, right? I mean, heaven forbid that the avatar returned in our lifetime! It's not as if the children of the universe could create beauty on their own without divine guidance, is it?
there are some here who got his message of love... there are others who didn't.... those of you who got it have a responsibility to share the message with the others, hate only serves the dark one, and we don't want to go there, do we?
@desolationrow I think your choice of name and the words on your channel page say all there is to say about the validity of your comments. Open YOUR mind instead of following the paradigm that was force fed into your mind by 'polite society'. Your analogy of sheep is a very apt self description for you. Follow the herd.
So beautiful! I had forgotten about this song; when's the last time you heard an FM station play it? Crosby could really create beautiful harmonic structures in some of his song. Similar to Traid, listen to the chord progression in Crosby's "Everyone's been burned," recorded when he was wit the Byrds.
@jhop9898 I wondered too, so I Googled it. A reference to a Martian bonding ceremony from Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land". Kind of like being "blood brothers" but on Mars, water water was even more precious than gold or blood. I read the book about 1971, and never made the connection with the song. Google, and you too shall grok.
If you want to hear a live version of this song, try the Hot Tuna version off the "Four Way Street". Sung by a man, but still a haunting ballard, and well done.....
@MsSemiautomatic Yep, I'm raising my hand! From TOS, I'm ok with Kirk/Spock/McCoy (although K/S is totally my OTP), but the new movie made me think about Kirk/Spock/Uhura. Anyway, any True Blood lover supports Bill/Sookie/Eric? Fucking OT3 right there.
I tend to think that anyone who thinks life with three people in love is a blast haven't had too terribly much time with just two people in love... it gets pretty damn complicated between two, much less three!
Still, if people don't mind sharing, I'm not the guy to tell 'em they can't...
this one still sends shivers down my spine. so exquisite. To say nothing of the message. the Crown of Creation lp was the high-water-mark of world civilization: beeen downhill ever since....
We're just a band that likes this kind of music and relates more to the 60's, 70's and 90's than today's music. We're just looking to be heard, if you would actually take the time to listen one of our songs on our channel and comment, we would really appreciated it. Thanks Peace.
calm down ...calm down it's only a beautiful song, penned by one of the Byrds. But I noticed you, Mr WillnNewhaven, seem rather passionate about it, good on Ya!!!! Because such difficult subjects are seldom dealt with in popular music. Plus our Grace could out do any female ( except, maybe Joplin) when it comes to vocals.
Tune was rejected by McGuinn. One of the reasons Crosby split the Byrds. I always thought it was a big mistake to not have had this tune lead of 'Notorious Byrd Bros' lp. Would have made the record a hit as the song was perfect for the time.
Instead they kicked out Crosby and led off with the godawful 'Artificial Energy'.
I once was in a relationship just like this. I fell in love with my boyfriend's best friend, and he loved me. And they loved each other, but not sexually, but deeply enough that they where willing to share me. It was the most complete I ever felt in my whole life, when i slept between them in our bed.
It's pretty-simple. Curiousity allows all ones fantacy to manifest itself within the lyrics. Questions of self, right and wrong until you give up and just listen or grab your guitar and sing along! Isn't it fun?
I think Joni might have had more affairs than Grace did when she was very young, Grace once made a wisecrack about Crosby's polygamist tendancies. saying she had to hand it to him for pulling it off, seeing that he was not exactly the sexiest man in rock and roll
Grace decided to record this for one reason. The fact that it was a different take on a love song. Not because it was a belief she held Now David Crosby, That is another kettle of fish
Love is such a strong thing and it's a bond between people, a matter of trust. the world is a cruel place sometimes where people have to compete. I was born in the 60s and always believed in the hippy love thing about being kind to people. One day I hope that we can move on somewhere where people are all friends and there's no unhappiness, only understanding between people. I think it will happen, probably not in my lifetime, maybe not even in yours... hope is what keeps us going I suppose : )
once we realize that judging is a huge mistake and that rules and morals were put there to herd us in like cattle- we can move on in love and the world will be a better place....
@1bichon1 I think Grace generally kept to one at a time, with an occasional occasional. The long-term relationships were apparently Spencer Dryden, the drummer, and then Paul Kantner.
Interesting bit of information from captaineasychord, as I was a big fan of McGuinn/Byrds etc. But for all its beautiful sound this song is let down for me by the fact it sounds like a bird whose just been caught shagging her mans mate and wants to "poetically"get off with it and still have both of them. Get real.
@WillInNewHaven narrow minded jackass? MMMmmm pull your head out your ass I posted that comment because a similar situation was the outcome of a relationship once. So how narrow minded am I? Bumsquirt.(ie. grow up before you insult folk)
I think everyone on here should list their secret triad or wish for. I'll go first: Me Myself and I! Ha Ha! Now let's hear some really interesting combinations.
The national anthem of the "Polyamory" community! Seriously -- a beautiful song which must have turned a LOT of heads in '68, especially with a WOMAN's voice proposing the arrangement. Crosby's songwriting skills and Slick's lush voice are an unbeatable combination -- thanks for posting this!
@mikal9000 That's because the arrangement doesn't have to be one guy and several women, it can be the other way around. Everyone has this silly idea that it has to be just one guy. It can be several!
@limbdarkening Actually, because this song is sung by a woman, it has to be about two girls and one guy. Because she says:
1. "no one has ever said such a thing to you" to the 1st partner, so the partner is currently in an accepted, non-taboo (meaning heterosexual) relationship
2. "me & him or you & me" So the 2nd partner is a guy.
these two facts imply that the 1st partner is a woman
@limbdarkening You can like/have any kind of relationship you want, but if its sung by a woman then from what the singer is saying it is about 2 girls/1 guy. If it was sung by a guy it would be 2 guys/1 girl. From 2 things the singer says you can conclude that its sung to a woman who's dating a guy. So the sex of the singer determines whether its FFM or MMF.
@jhop9898 ah, this makes sense, thanks. Well, it could still be interpreted in whatever way has most meaning to the listener :) such a beautiful song...
Controversial song for its time, David Crosby originally recorded it with the Byrds for the Notorious Byrd Brothers album but Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman vetoed it in favor of the innocuous Goin' Back and kicked Crosby out of the band. Then Jefferson Airplane recorded their version with David on guitar.
Absolutely beautiful. I love this band. I'm Irish and have only recently discovered San Fran music from the 60's. Can anyone recomend me a band from this era (apart from the Dead) that plays equally great music?
Everything armenianweirdo said plus Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Donovan, Crosby Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Uriah Heep, and The Moody Blues. These are a few with a unique sound, although not necessarily of the 60's. Although most are.
I'd recommend Quicksilver Messenger Service and Its a Beautiful Day. Especially Its a Beautiful day. The San Fran influence is very clear with this band.

I tend to think that anyone who thinks life with three people in love is a blast haven't had too terribly much time with just two people in love... it gets pretty damn complicated between two, much less three!
Still, if people don't mind sharing, I'm not the guy to tell 'em they can't...

People under 60 have a hard time understanding how radical this idea was at the time. Definitely not openly admitted easily in 1970.

@LilHimeLorelei Yep, Although we don't like to admit it, but I suspect that most of us at some point of our lives have been in this situation.

It's pretty-simple. Curiousity allows all ones fantacy to manifest itself within the lyrics. Questions of self, right and wrong until you give up and just listen or grab your guitar and sing along! Isn't it fun?

David wrote this song for Joni Mitchell for the fact he and Nash were in love with her.
texadillo53 2 years ago 2
I think Joni might have had more affairs than Grace did when she was very young, Grace once made a wisecrack about Crosby's polygamist tendancies. saying she had to hand it to him for pulling it off, seeing that he was not exactly the sexiest man in rock and roll
westpalmscott 2 years ago
@texadillo53 That is my understanding, as well.
kerrgal 11 months ago
Though, I always thought it was about a man and two women.
kerrgal 11 months ago
Grace decided to record this for one reason. The fact that it was a different take on a love song. Not because it was a belief she held Now David Crosby, That is another kettle of fish

The song worked for me a couple of times....lol

can you love 2 people at the same time? can you be in love with 2 people?
craigleithdavid 2 years ago
Yes.
VenomousIvette 2 years ago
I think so too, but it can get very compicated. When you think love is always simple and kind, but there is so much misunderstanding.
craigleithdavid 2 years ago
Exactly..
VenomousIvette 2 years ago
Love is such a strong thing and it's a bond between people, a matter of trust. the world is a cruel place sometimes where people have to compete. I was born in the 60s and always believed in the hippy love thing about being kind to people. One day I hope that we can move on somewhere where people are all friends and there's no unhappiness, only understanding between people. I think it will happen, probably not in my lifetime, maybe not even in yours... hope is what keeps us going I suppose : )
craigleithdavid 2 years ago 10
once we realize that judging is a huge mistake and that rules and morals were put there to herd us in like cattle- we can move on in love and the world will be a better place....
fezzappa 1 year ago
If you had time enough you could love everyone who was kind and honorable. Whether this would be romantic/sexual love is a different question.
Certainly, two would be no problem.

1bichon1 2 years ago
What are your ideas?
VenomousIvette 2 years ago
yes, with spencer and paul.
loksartre 2 years ago
@1bichon1 I think Grace generally kept to one at a time, with an occasional occasional. The long-term relationships were apparently Spencer Dryden, the drummer, and then Paul Kantner.
WillInNewHaven 1 year ago
Interesting bit of information from captaineasychord, as I was a big fan of McGuinn/Byrds etc. But for all its beautiful sound this song is let down for me by the fact it sounds like a bird whose just been caught shagging her mans mate and wants to "poetically"get off with it and still have both of them. Get real.
deanosky 2 years ago
It probably sounds like that to every other narrow-minded jackass who can't imagine any life but his own.
WillInNewHaven 1 year ago
@WillInNewHaven narrow minded jackass? MMMmmm pull your head out your ass I posted that comment because a similar situation was the outcome of a relationship once. So how narrow minded am I? Bumsquirt.(ie. grow up before you insult folk)

The national anthem of the "Polyamory" community! Seriously -- a beautiful song which must have turned a LOT of heads in '68, especially with a WOMAN's voice proposing the arrangement. Crosby's songwriting skills and Slick's lush voice are an unbeatable combination -- thanks for posting this!
mikal9000 2 years ago 32
@mikal9000 That's because the arrangement doesn't have to be one guy and several women, it can be the other way around. Everyone has this silly idea that it has to be just one guy. It can be several!
limbdarkening 1 year ago
@limbdarkening Actually, because this song is sung by a woman, it has to be about two girls and one guy. Because she says:
1. "no one has ever said such a thing to you" to the 1st partner, so the partner is currently in an accepted, non-taboo (meaning heterosexual) relationship
2. "me & him or you & me" So the 2nd partner is a guy.
these two facts imply that the 1st partner is a woman
so, 2 girls 1 guy, which is how I like it anyway.
jhop9898 1 year ago
@jhop9898 No, it still could be 2 guys and a girl. Which is the way I like it.
limbdarkening 1 year ago
@limbdarkening You can like/have any kind of relationship you want, but if its sung by a woman then from what the singer is saying it is about 2 girls/1 guy. If it was sung by a guy it would be 2 guys/1 girl. From 2 things the singer says you can conclude that its sung to a woman who's dating a guy. So the sex of the singer determines whether its FFM or MMF.
jhop9898 1 year ago
@jhop9898 Well, since Slick was sleeping with at least two of her bandmates it makes sense that she's singing to 2 guys, which is how I see it.

@CultureJudge Not at the same time crosby wrote this it got him kicked out of the byrds then he was hanging around with grace

@jhop9898 ah, this makes sense, thanks. Well, it could still be interpreted in whatever way has most meaning to the listener :) such a beautiful song...
alzarianfox 1 year ago
@alzarianfox Absolutely, you can interpret it any way you want. I was just curious what the facts were. And you're right, it is a great song.
jhop9898 1 year ago
Controversial song for its time, David Crosby originally recorded it with the Byrds for the Notorious Byrd Brothers album but Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman vetoed it in favor of the innocuous Goin' Back and kicked Crosby out of the band. Then Jefferson Airplane recorded their version with David on guitar.
