They did not have a good reputation in Québec, Canada. the main problem was rust after 1 year due to the salty road during winter. But they were a real kind of beast for the price at that time. They were a real success for the first 2 or 4 years. But as the other cars in Québec, the only solution is oil treatment and electric rustproof system. Salutation to Russia great people doing a lot with nothing like here in Québec.
@rog19581986 Rust is a huge problem on Nivas. Good thing is that the steel used is as thick as the armor on an M1A1 :) The Niva wasn't built to look pretty, just to go. Learn how to weld in patches and you're ok (the Niva as an educational device :)

I owned a 98 Lada Niva and it made it to
32,000 km and fell apart. It was great offroader but other than that a total fucking shit heap. 75horse power, turn signals didn't work at 15,000km, the fuses corroded the engine wiring coroded, the transfer case gave out... The lada is proof positive that communism does not work!
Yes, but communism in the Soviet Union ended in 1991... so really its not proof that communism doesn't work, its proof that capitalism didn't make it any better.
Well not so fast there... The Niva (which remained for all intents and purposes unchanged during its production History) fizzled out when products of capitalism squeezed it out of the marketplace.
Although the Niva was capable when mechanically sound (a state the vehicle is known for not favouring) it's cold war era obsolescence, poor engineering, assembly and low quality of workmanship led to the vehicles extinction when it had to compete in a capitalist free market.
Fizzled out how long after? Quite a while. In fact Russia's car situation didn't really improve until recently, but it's not hard to see why. The low quality of workmanship remained a problem, and still is, with domestic vehicles. Capitalism is great when you have a whole bunch of rich people, but that wasn't the case in Russia. It would prove to be difficult to stimulate the economy, especially after the collapse. A new economic system wasn't going to suddenly make things better, like a pill.
actually, they are still made and are quite popular throughout europe. they have also made a larger version now with 5 doors as well as the 3 door version seen here.
they are actually very good vehicles. the reason they were pulled off of the north american and UK markets was that production was slower than demand and so they decided to just sell in russia.
this is why russian cars are the best. they are just made to drive, no computers or anything. just push the pedal and go and it will do everything you need it to.
i bet BMWs, Mercedes, and hummers would have a tough time doing that, or even going half way up.
Best Jeep in the World !!!
