I saw that same bird in the woods. It killed a squirrel. I live in Michigan. I didn't know hawks were that big, I thought it was an eagle. It's wingspan was HUGE. the bird alone looked like it was 3 feet tall
white people love this song. they listen to it and imagine themselves going on a killing spree in third world countries, or poor neighborhoods in their own hometowns, mowing down minorities with twin gatling guns laying waste to life and property...but then they snap back to reality and see their black supervisor/boss standing over them wondering where the overdue reports are and receiving a text from his daughter asking for the car to go visit her half salvadorean half arab boyfriend.
This is an amazing catch, I love it. That said, it is not a hawk of any kind. Hawks and falcons have very long pronounced talons, as this is their primary method of catching and killing prey (although falcons do sever the spine of their prey after subduing it). I froze this a number of times and see the pinkish bird feed, but no long talons of a hawk of any kind. Again, still a great catch.
I just received another notification that there is still a debate here? RedTail, Buteo. The prey might have caused confusion because of the white secondaries. But it is a common pigeon, Redtails, especially urban ones eat them all the time. I can see why someone said Magpie, but no. And hawks kill falcons, even falcons kill and eat other falcons. It is all about opportunity, and territory.
First of all, the music sucks. Secondly, that didn't look anything like any kind of falcon. It looked like one of the tens of millions of pigeons we have in this country.
I love to correct comments from non experts, I read that they could tell because, "1 foot was not located backward."? Again unless you are not sure, Look at owls, and think if you might have picked up your theory on toes while skimming a book.
from a falconer, an adult redtail, I don't want to get into groups. I disagree, 1st, it looks like a pigeon it is eatting and I have seen Malanistic Redtails on both coasts, and colors to match. you are saying 16 types of Buteo's right, including one parabuteo, am I correct? I don't think Redtails can be divided into that many groups, as stated, if people want to attach names such as Harlans, who am I to say different, but is that at the genetic level, now I am curious steve@yahoo.com
Redtails are Buteos. In the States there 16 types. The common term is Buzzard. I have known oil field workers in Alaska that refered to White phase Gyrs a Buzzards.

Obviously that's not a falcon....hawks can't catch falcon. PERIOD. Short of one being injured, a hawk has ZERO chance of eating one unless it's a carion eater. This isn't a falcon but as previously mentioned a magpie...duh!

Whats your point Gyrkin59?, You replied to my comment from 8 months ago to basically tell me I'm wrong and you're right?, I've been involved with Falconers, and bird photography for over 20 years, that means I've spent thousands of hours just sitting and watching every different raptor in this state, Ferruginous, Swainsons, Red, Red Shouldered, etc etc, Prairies, Peregrines, Kestrels, Golden Eagles, When I go to my other home in Minnesota-It's Rough Legged, Broad Winged, Merlins, Bald Eagles.

But in level flight, it's not all that impressive and pigeons regularly outfly them. All the rest of this (about following their "owners" everywhere because they're picky, etc.) is equally BS. They're opportunistic, & know he will feed them. That's all. They don't "hate" each other, and a few are social. Don't believe the fools.

The prey's coloration was not that of the Peregrine. The feet did not look to be that of a raptor as well. The RTH would definitely have to surprise the other bird it if it was was a raptor.
yes, very true i see falcons here in the arabian gulf eat eachother all the time.... although their the fastest animal in the world they have no emotion to one another.... on that note i have seen falcons only respond to their masters and will literally fallow them everywhere, so that doesnt mean that they dont have any emotion, its just that their picky.
For YOUR info, the pigeon outflies them both in a flat line chase. The PEREGRINE stoop is the fastest recorded (though my money says the barbary may be faster)... but that's straight down, falling through the air, not level flight. The red-tail may have grabbed a falcon while it was on a kill, or just found it easy to take. Red-tails regularly feed on pigeons in urban environments by catching them unaware. Please, don't be running off at the fingers as if you knew when you have no clue.
Idiot. It's only "fastest" in a stoop, falling vertically towards the ground, and even then, I'd lay odds that a Barbary can be faster. You're buying into the Peregrine Fund's hyperbole, in absence of fact.
Im not an idiot, i said they are fastest, which is fact, just because i didnt specify does not give you the right to call me an idiot OK? now im not going to sit here like a dumbfuckface beasteality birdfucker like you probably are and argue with you over youtube. it is a fact that Peregrines are clocked to be the fastest. Unless you have evidence im not "buying" into any of ur bird porn sorry bud.
Actually, you ARE an idiot, and you DID argue with me "over" Youtube, and even tried to insult me -- which is patently laughable, if only you bothered to know who you were attempting to insult. It is not a "fact", it's just the propaganda you bought into. But you go ahead and believe anything you like. You'll never have one on your fist, so it really doesn't matter. Meanwhile, those of us who do fly them every day know you're an idiot, all the worse for that you choose to remain oblivious.
Not at all accurate. They're predators, meat-eaters. They don't actively look for another raptor as prey, but they'll eat whatever. Golden eagles and larger red-tails commonly try bullying prairie falcons off of their kills, for example. If the falcon won't leave off, the hawk or eagle will eat both falcon and prey.
larey is correct. Nowhere did he say they actively seek out other raptors as prey but given the opportunity they will certainly kill and eat each other, not only because they are rivals for food and territory but because any other raptor in the area is a threat to its young in the breeding season.
its kind of like david in animorphs when he almost ate tobias in golden eagle morph.if you dont know what animorphs is they are books about kids who are saving the world from aliens and the kids turn into animals to do it.check them out or ill bitch you(just kidding lol)
this is a redtailed hawk eating a pigeon, Im a lisenced master falconer and can assure you i know the difference. Also nugzfan85 is the only moron I see on here. A gyr falcon is bigger than any hawk and the reason falcons achieve high speeds in flight has nothing to do with there size but how they are shaped. Long wings and the ability to streamline there bodys to slip through the airs molecules.
Actually, the Red-tailed Hawk is eating a pigeon with a couple of white wing feathers ( a very common genetic trait as all wild pigeons in the US are descended from domestic stock). When the hawk flips the prey around you can see the red pigeon legs and feet and short square tail. A magpie has longer legs and bigger feet, both black in color, and they have a very long tail.
I agree , the song is awsome, I'm not complaining about the song I am complaining about how many times it used in videos to be flagged as "cool", but it fails when used too much, read before you write dude.
Wrong again. "Falcons can readily fight off a hawk"? Uhm, no. Depends on the falcon, of course, but even gyr vs red-tail, chances are good the hawk wins. Why? More powerful feet and talons. Falcons' toes are longer and thinner, less powerful. Falcons only win in the air, when stooping through a wing from above.
ok mate, I'm not gonna engage in a useless discussion with someone that has been arguing with opinions on this video that were posted 8 months ago and has wrote about 10 consecutive comments on the last 4 hours... you surely have a problem in which you think you are smarter than other people, but sometimes it's not like that.
I surely AM smarter than other people, especially on this subject. I've been trapping, breeding and flying raptors for 40 years on 3 continents. I'm the authoritative voice on one African species. When they were posted is irrelevant; 8 minutes or 8 months, it's still here now. 10 comments? Yep, lots of ignorance being spewed as truth, and if it goes unopposed, people take that as Truth and regurgitate it, making yet another layer/generation of ignorance. weak excuse, and no refutation, mate
an advice: if you really want people to listen to you, be humble, not aggressive as you have been for most of the comments. Bear in mind that many people here are inexperient on the field. By loosing your patience you just make yourself look like a fool and nobody will show you or either your comments any respect at all. so what I told you is not a weak excuse, it's an advice for your own good mate...
Just so you know, I am not saying that a falcon could kill a hawk, simply that it would be almost impossible for a hawk to prey on a falcon, since the hawk itself wants to avoid the peril of getting injured by a falcon's talons, even if they are weaker, they still can pierce through bird skin. Maybe a hawk could prey on an inexperient juvenile falcon, but that is very rare. And it is not the case in this video, as I pointed out that the talons from the prey this hawk killed are not of a raptor.
First off, define "falcon." A 185 gram kestrel, or a female gyr that outweighs a red-tailed hawk? In neither case is fear a concern. Eagles hunt coyotes in the wild, and regularly take hawks AND falcons while they're on a kill. Hawks take falcons all too often. I've had red-tails come in and attack my peregrines while I was standing there in the field. You're another of those armchair experrts with no real-world knowledge, so stop passing on what you've only ever read about, okay?
On this, you are correct, Nakka, and that was a good analysis. The ramblings people put on here about what a hawk or falcon would or could do or not do, though, are vapid.
Also, red-tailed hawks often challenge Peregrines for territory but are usually chased off. In Rochester, we have an extremely aggressive female named Mariah who clearly reminds all others whose boss. The other day, a red-tailed hawk managed to land on her lunch and try to steal it. Needless to say, Mariah was not happy and gave the hawk a run for his life and dived-bombed him repeatedly. Amazing he lived to tell the story.
I saw that same bird in the woods. It killed a squirrel. I live in Michigan. I didn't know hawks were that big, I thought it was an eagle. It's wingspan was HUGE. the bird alone looked like it was 3 feet tall

that song so did not suit this video and thts not a falcon. a hawk and falcon dont even try to eat eachother
amusielski23 2 years ago
Not at all accurate. They're predators, meat-eaters. They don't actively look for another raptor as prey, but they'll eat whatever. Golden eagles and larger red-tails commonly try bullying prairie falcons off of their kills, for example. If the falcon won't leave off, the hawk or eagle will eat both falcon and prey.
Gyrkin59 2 years ago
larey is correct. Nowhere did he say they actively seek out other raptors as prey but given the opportunity they will certainly kill and eat each other, not only because they are rivals for food and territory but because any other raptor in the area is a threat to its young in the breeding season.

its kind of like david in animorphs when he almost ate tobias in golden eagle morph.if you dont know what animorphs is they are books about kids who are saving the world from aliens and the kids turn into animals to do it.check them out or ill bitch you(just kidding lol)

strengthofthewind 2 years ago
this is a redtailed hawk eating a pigeon, Im a lisenced master falconer and can assure you i know the difference. Also nugzfan85 is the only moron I see on here. A gyr falcon is bigger than any hawk and the reason falcons achieve high speeds in flight has nothing to do with there size but how they are shaped. Long wings and the ability to streamline there bodys to slip through the airs molecules.

Sick sound track for nature-a vicious portrayal of nature as inraged-like the creator of this video.
geoffreyah 2 years ago
I never seen the difference btween hawks and falcons.
5KnuckleShuffle94 2 years ago
Actually, the Red-tailed Hawk is eating a pigeon with a couple of white wing feathers ( a very common genetic trait as all wild pigeons in the US are descended from domestic stock). When the hawk flips the prey around you can see the red pigeon legs and feet and short square tail. A magpie has longer legs and bigger feet, both black in color, and they have a very long tail.

falcons have whooped golden eagles' butts... i don't think the hawk is eating a falcon.
suicunesrider 2 years ago
1:22 that's not a raptor talon for sure. Falcons can readily fight off a hawk, except for kestrels, which are too small.
Nakka92 2 years ago 2
Wrong again. "Falcons can readily fight off a hawk"? Uhm, no. Depends on the falcon, of course, but even gyr vs red-tail, chances are good the hawk wins. Why? More powerful feet and talons. Falcons' toes are longer and thinner, less powerful. Falcons only win in the air, when stooping through a wing from above.
Gyrkin59 2 years ago
ok mate, I'm not gonna engage in a useless discussion with someone that has been arguing with opinions on this video that were posted 8 months ago and has wrote about 10 consecutive comments on the last 4 hours... you surely have a problem in which you think you are smarter than other people, but sometimes it's not like that.
Nakka92 2 years ago
I surely AM smarter than other people, especially on this subject. I've been trapping, breeding and flying raptors for 40 years on 3 continents. I'm the authoritative voice on one African species. When they were posted is irrelevant; 8 minutes or 8 months, it's still here now. 10 comments? Yep, lots of ignorance being spewed as truth, and if it goes unopposed, people take that as Truth and regurgitate it, making yet another layer/generation of ignorance. weak excuse, and no refutation, mate
Gyrkin59 2 years ago
an advice: if you really want people to listen to you, be humble, not aggressive as you have been for most of the comments. Bear in mind that many people here are inexperient on the field. By loosing your patience you just make yourself look like a fool and nobody will show you or either your comments any respect at all. so what I told you is not a weak excuse, it's an advice for your own good mate...
Nakka92 2 years ago
Just so you know, I am not saying that a falcon could kill a hawk, simply that it would be almost impossible for a hawk to prey on a falcon, since the hawk itself wants to avoid the peril of getting injured by a falcon's talons, even if they are weaker, they still can pierce through bird skin. Maybe a hawk could prey on an inexperient juvenile falcon, but that is very rare. And it is not the case in this video, as I pointed out that the talons from the prey this hawk killed are not of a raptor.
Nakka92 2 years ago
First off, define "falcon." A 185 gram kestrel, or a female gyr that outweighs a red-tailed hawk? In neither case is fear a concern. Eagles hunt coyotes in the wild, and regularly take hawks AND falcons while they're on a kill. Hawks take falcons all too often. I've had red-tails come in and attack my peregrines while I was standing there in the field. You're another of those armchair experrts with no real-world knowledge, so stop passing on what you've only ever read about, okay?
Gyrkin59 2 years ago
100% sure. That bird is eating a dark check white flight pigeon, you can see both the feet and wing
ieguy3 2 years ago 4
he's eating a nighthawk (look it up on google) they have exactly those wings with the white bar and same size
afffred 3 years ago
Not a falcon,,most likely a pigeon.
pacho001 3 years ago
dude thats sick. its like a grizzly eating a polar bear, crocodile eating an alligator, or man eating a chimp--fucking cannibalism.
rsuriyop 3 years ago
calm down it's not a falcon, it's a pigeon species.. in minute 1:22 you can see those talons are not a raptor's.
Nakka92 2 years ago 2
nice observation.
bderevlany 2 years ago
thanks ;)
Nakka92 2 years ago
On this, you are correct, Nakka, and that was a good analysis. The ramblings people put on here about what a hawk or falcon would or could do or not do, though, are vapid.
Gyrkin59 2 years ago
Definitely not a Peregrine Falcon. No talons.
