I remember how I hated these cars back in the days because they were so "high-tech". Now seeing the modern cars I wish we could have these again... And actually same applies to rallying and road cars too. Older = better.
@jockejocke1 i love how basic the steering wheels used to be back in the day! and yes Mika with a ferrari like reliable McLaren would have won many more titels i believe.
Schumacher used his dirty tricks again trying to push Hakkinen towards the grass. But Hakkinen was too fast, Schumacher almost pushed himself towards the grass.
@raphaelchekroun Schumacher's start was not poor. It was normal and quite good compared to the other drivers, besides Mika of course. I'm not dissing Schumi, but his starts were never his strongest point (though not bad either), even though he was great in other areas. But Mika's starts were a lot of the time exceptional.
You've just watched the finest F1 start, under pressure of a championship, in history...By the first corner, Hakkinen was at least 50 metres ahead of Schumacher...
bring back those v10 engines with that beautiful sound and get rid of those v6 2.4 liter turbocharged engines wich they're going to use in 2012 i believe..
@BonakiD24 Today's mclaren engine (with accordance of the FIA regulations): Mercedes-Benz FO 108Y 2.4L (146 cu in) V8 (90°). Naturally-aspirated, 18,000 RPM limited with KERS, mid-mounted. Horsepower is not disclosed ------- The 1999 car was using this: 3.0L Mercedes FO110H 72° V10, naturally aspirated, mid-mounted. HP: 800 bhp / 589 kW @ 17,100 rpm
@TuneViper It wasn't so much that Schumacher got a terrible start, more that Hakkinen had an amazing start. Hakkinen had many brilliant starts, this was one of his best.
Seems very smooth and kinda slow (relatively), he doesn't attack the final chicane at all. Would this be because it's the first lap and the tyres need to be warmed up? I'm not being critical in any way, I'm simply intrigued and curious.
@Boxyno1 The grooved tyres do take a while to warm up, but he's just super smooth as the downforce levels are pretty high so no need to fight the car round. The engine's also very quiet on throttle off, which can be deceptive
These cars just flowed so nicely, it sounds like those V10s are being fuelled on double cream. I love that moment of silence every time he lifts off for a slow corner and the engine is almost silent.
The thing is, with the Hakkinen vs. Schumacher-rivalry, it was all about pushing eachother to see who was the best. No politics, no backstabbing, no throwing with mud in the media, no general bond of hatred or friendship between the two of them, just two incredibly fast racers in incredible cars pushing eachother to the limit and beyond. That's why the rivalry was good and why they had so much respect for eachother's abilities, because they considered it to be their equal.
I always liked the late 90's early 2000's mclaren cars, they barely had a wheel it was like a very fast soapbox car with two strings to steer lol. Go mclaren!! Go Hamilton!
I think this was the only time Schumacher was happy to be beaten at the start, as he saw Mika Hakkinen go for the championship. He would've freaked out, if Eddie Irvine had become world champion in the Ferrari before him.
Amazing how peaceful the first lap of a race is from onboard the first place car, nothing ahead but the track and no noise but your own... Great launch by Mika, his rivalry with MSC is what got me interested in the sport.
@waterpolodan Their rivalry was a hell of a fight, a thing that today's F1 is missing. The last serious F1 rivalry was back in 2006 (MSC vs Alonso) and since then, nothing
@opo1993 the duel between Hamilton and Alonso had fun when they were both driving for Mclaren, but Ron Dennis cut it out and threw alonso out of the team. Webber and Vettel are funny, crashing into each other and make stupid mistakes. Well that's not a duel, it's more like a circus :P
@Ferariiman Yeah I agree with you, Hakkinen and Schumacher had some of the best races that F1 has ever seen. Both teams used everything they had to win, including controversial team orders and aggressive racing styles. Yeah 2006 was great, but it was all pit stop strategy. Everyrace it was about who was gonna leapfrog who, but that year was exciting. 2010 was indeed filled with mistakes and it was circus like. I hope 2011 will bring back classic down to the wire wheel to wheel racing
@Ferariiman U are nuts, F1 is undergoing another golden era with closer racing and more overtaking in 1 season than a whole decade of the V10 era, we have it so good right now. I'm guessing you are bitter that ferrari are not walking away with it like they used to.
It's a bird! it's a plane... no it's the 1999 mclaren driven by the master himself!!!

I fondly remember getting up at like 5am to see this race, my dad thought I was crazy but I just had to see if Mika would take the title or not.
And boy did he ever, he took the title in style. He fucked everybody that day.
It was so nice to see, and it's a great memory for me.
