Why did they do it? They had no idea of the risks. God bless those people. We can only imagine what the world would be like today if they ahdn't done what they did. Nuclear energy is a great thing...but tremendously fragile.
Im pro-nuclear. But not pro-nuclear in the short term. This power needs to be used for the worlds energy problem. But it needs to be safe. Currently, it is not safe enough.
We need to account for every eventuality. Every possible disaster that could occur. Unless we can account for that, we cannot use this power.
Luckily Fukushima is not in the same league as Chernobyl. Hopefully we will not see something in Chernobyls league ever again.
Nuclear power.... Not safe. Scrap it. Anything that poses that kind of threat to human survival should never be used. I thank the real Heroes in this documentary as I was only two and they without a doubt saved my life from death or horrors that I have not had to face nor worry about until Fukushima. I have someone else to thank now everyday.
the technitians at the plant were not told about the faws in the chernobyl reactor design, becawse the high ups feard that it would lower moral or confidece, whateaver.
the design of the reactor was the main reason of the explosion as was human error
I hope many people in Japan are watching or have watched this video at some point because right now, they're having their own Chernobyl with their Fukushima plant in wake of that devastating 9.0 quake/tsunami combo they went through over the weekend. If so, they need to start taking notes from this PRONTO. This is already becoming a global concern...
@Tobus75 you forgot about the microphones!!! it's always the countries who put tons of microphones on the podium after a disaster that are the bad ones. like during the Iraq invasion in 2003, while US forces were on the ground but not to the capital yet, the officials were putting TONS of microphones on their podium, most of which were attached to NOTHING!
@SzopenPan by soviet standards, it isn't even that many. i've seen footage where LITERALLY the ENTIRE jacket is covered... on the collars, everything... it's crazy. :-P
@bronzeonion that's because in the communist world, everyone is *supposedly* equal. we all know that's a bunch of bull, but the world symbolizes both being equal AND the idea that they're all in their fight (for communism, country, chernobyl, whatever) together.
they didn't shut down any safety system, and it wasn't 100% their fault... although they didn't follow top level advice at which level of power the test should be carried out at, they were still victims of cover up, there were serious design flaws in chernobyl to begin with.
Technically they could have run the test as the wrong level if those flaws hadn't been there, and there wouldn't have been a problem.
@2009OLP the fact that the fukushima plant withstood an earthquake of that magnitude without suffering utter failure should tell you something about how safe nuclear power is.
@seraph1m87 I waited, so you could see what is happening with the reactors in Japan now. The radioactive levels in the large surrounding area is intolerably high, in legal standards, let alone the coming human health damages, which could be going on now, the media never tells the the straight truth. Also, now radiation is leaking into the pacific ocean, is that a sign of a "safe" power source withstanding a disaster!? The soil in that surrounding area is 10 000 times the legal limit.
This story must B repeated over & over so it stays fresh in our minds. It can't be forgotten because it shows us how limited we as humans @ controling accidents like this. It isnt their fault but shows us our limitations once there is an accident & there is no turning back and the fallout is catastrophic.

It's a good job the Russians have scraped the reactors used in Chernobyl, they were incredibly dangerous

@SzopenPan
You can generally judge how "bad" a country is by the amount of medals and the bigness of army hats. Russia (then USSR) ranks very high!

are you kidding?! it was 100% their fault. they shut down all the safety systems that were in place to prevent a meltdown and performed tests.
a modern nuclear reactor, properly maintained and operated, is perfectly safe.
