  • I first heard this performance in 1988, I think (cassette). so nice, to see/hear it here. Thanks very much for posting.

  • Those "...generic elements of a traditional college level composition class" are utilized by everyone from blues guitar players to Stravinsky.

"...who ever said anything about fact?" YOU. You declare his solo to be shit and argue anyone who differs to be WRONG as if your opinion is law. Lol... you sir have proven yourself to be an ignorant blowhard. This should be obvious by the amount of people kicking your ass all over the place here.

  • @Composer19691 ha ha ha. once again, you guys are very entertaining and the level of self deception is astonishing. RE: facts. anything that comes out of my mouth, your mouth or anyone else's mouth is merely an opinion. there is no such thing as fact. if i say his solo is shit that's what i think it is. you gave my opinion more power by trying to defend goodrick. obviously, you feel it's necessary to defend him. i wonder why that is.

  • @halfmonk ha ha ha, your ignorance and envy is the only thing you have. You've done everything you can to prove that you're a musical half-wit without a bit of taste, and you've succeeded wildly. But do keep us posted on all of your world tours with the likes of Haden, DeJohnette and the many other world-class improvisors who value Goodrick's soloing, comping and grace. We'll all be waiting for your recordings with them. And nobody is defending Goodrick, we're just pointing out your stupidity.

  • @halfmonk On the contrary. My first words to you were "It's fine that you don't like Mick's solo. Really it is. But..." It's your insistence that everyone who doesn't agree with your assessment are tone deaf hacks. That's the irony. Your blathering on about " if i say his solo is shit that's what i think it is" applies equally to those who think contrary. If I say it's a finely crafted solo... then it is. So back up and do some self examination troll. Cheers

  • @Composer19691 once again, you twist what i wrote in a weak attempt to paint me as having initiated a personal attack on you. bullshit. i called goodrick a hack on this solo. then i responded to those who started ad hominem attacks because i had the balls to say this solo was weak. you can continue your propaganda program it will not change the reality what i wrote. as far as trolling, that's a double edged sword. you gave as good as you got.

  • When/where was this recorded?

  • Such a great bass solo

  • Is it just me or did the bass player switch to a different tonality?

  • Mick is the shit. TWo hand tapping in jazz kids, it is possible.

  • "thats just like... your opinion man" I liked Goodrick's solo

  • great group except for mick goodrick. not even in the same league with haden, redman and motian. goodrick is a wanker soloist. i saw him with gary burton's group back in the 80s, he sucked then too.

  • @halfmonk Yeah but at 5:32 he starts to sound like a master though...

  • @guitarsvolta. what are you talking about, man? you mean when he runs out of ideas and randomly throws in some chords? i.e. chordal wankery. goodrick's whole solo is a complete wank and if that ain't bad enough he ends it with a cliched guitar gimmick. if you want to hear some soulful playing listen to dewey's solo. or how charlie plays the simplest melodic idea and follows it all the way to it's logical conclusion. they ain't trying to prove anything, just playing great music.

  • @halfmonk In his book Advancing Guitarist Mick says that One of the only things worth taking seriously is a sense of humor. I think his solo was funny as hell. And I love the way he keeps whistling at this "Lonely Woman"

  • In the beginning, I couldn't agree more with @halfmonk

    but...

I don't know, love 'the search' and I think it actually kicks ass :-)

So I agree with @halfmonk and @guitarsvolta at the same time...

  • @halfmonk He must really suck in order to have this gig, right? Where is your Youtube id with Charlie Haden?

    You must be deaf.

  • @ronjazz1 i'm deaf enough to hear when someone is doing some jive ass bullshit. and i don't have to prove to shit to critique mick goodrick playing on this. he's just a human being like anyone else. you want to worship at his altar, go ahead. don't bother me with the fucking details.

  • @halfmonk

Of course you won't be bothered with the details, you don't have a clue. Thanks for proving your neanderthal proclivities. I await your next recording with Haden, but I won't hold my breath.

  • @ronjazz1 ha ha ha. and i'll await you having a clue about someone improvising with any substance and content which will happen right after hell freezes over. hey, mick goodrick called and said he needs someone to come over and tell him how great he is. right after you kiss his ass.

  • @halfmonk

Yeah, that will be right after you release your record with Charlie Haden or Jack DeJohnette or Gary Burton, right, halfass? You're deaf and stupid, and you're too busy proving it to practice. Goodrick can make more music on one string than you ever will. You sound jealous, but that's to be expected from a clown like you.

  • @ronjazz1 ha ha ha. you're hilarious. i'm now beginning to suspect that you're one of goodrick's students. who else would think this solo was worth a crap. FYI, amongst a great number of improvising musicians, goodrick has been dismissed and labeled mediocre.

  • @halfmonk

Well, if all you have is that sad little lie, then you've confirmed that a) you're a musical idiot, and b) you're intensely jealous. Why don't you list all those "improvising musicians" who dismiss Goodrick as mediocre? And while you're creating that list out of thin air, perhaps you should try figuring out why you're such an abject failure.

  • @halfmonk It's fine that you don't like Mick's solo. Really it is. But he fully intends what he's playing. 'Running out of ideas' and 'random' chords my ass. He's not playing atonal shit or anything. He establishes tonality, quality of tone, restates motifs etc. It's an Ornette tune. Just because you don't hear it like some doesn't mean it sucks. Is Haden's solo a gimmick because he quotes an old cliched melody? If a sax player played those notes you'd probably think it was the shit. Whatever.

  • @Composer19691 i have no doubt he fully intends what he playing. which doesn't make it worth a crap. establishes tonality, quality of tone, restates motifs??? what is this? jazz class? WTF?

  • @halfmonk Lol. Those are just the elements that go into all of your favorite music and solos. Form and context matter too. It's what makes music enjoyable to people (from Mozart to Bird) even though they may not be able to classify such things. The same thing applies to writing and verbal communication too. It's also why some people can't appreciate complex harmonies, they have no context outside of triadic pop songs and rock progressions. Why do people declare their subjective opinion as fact?

  • @Composer19691 YOUR favorite solos and music. not everyone listens to music with all the generic elements of a traditional college level composition class. and who ever said anything about fact? there is no objective standard or criteria from which to judge anything. but you could always call on that blowhard, wynton marsalis. he tell you his "facts."

  • @halfmonk Sorry that it's so difficult for you to understand. i didn't realize, until now, that you were brain-damaged.

  • @ronjazz1 difficult to understand? ha ha ha. another hilarious self deception. your comments have been so juvenile and defensive they are not worth acknowledging. now you can go back to building your altar to goodrick's solo.

  • @halfmonk

Goodrick is in that company because he's one of them, not trying to prove anything, unlike you, who is trying to prove that you're an impotent, deaf troglodyte.

  • @ronjazz1 and you would be the expert on being an impotent deaf troglodyte. i love how some closed minded people think criticizing other musicians is the "WORST THING THAT COULD EVER HAPPEN" oh my god, you're criticizing the "great" mick goodrick. he's just wanking here. you want to kiss goodrick's ass when he's obviously playing a bunch of lame ass guitar wankery, go right ahead. i stick with listening to dewey redman and charlie haden. they clearly had something to say.

  • sublime

  • Play this while reading the Moloch section of "Howl", by Allen Ginsberg. It will blow your mind.
