  • one of my all-time fav bands...thanks for posting

  • THE ULTIMATE PACKAGE!!

  • partied with these guys at joe tripps in pensacola. they played the niceville mullet fest that weekend. Sam bush could smoke you out of weed and play his ass off. bela was quiet and aloof.pat also very nice guy the same with john. I wish they would have stayed together a little longer.

  • Damn, John Cowan makes it look so easy.

  • Humding

  • Bluegrass will never catch up to these guys! And this was long ago.

  • Im going to find those 6 people and hunt them down....lol

  • I hate electric bass with bluegrass. No example I have ever heard comes close to upright bass!

  • @dp17197 dude with this kinda groove of a bass line how could u hate it that tone is wicked awesome

  • @ThePaulwatson sorry that was my dad commenting on my channel...he does it all the time...i actually like the bass in this

  • How could you possibly dislike this??

  • Is there any chance this amazing band could regroup one day?

  • Holy Moses down under. These guys were and are still are innovative. Nice!

  • Those Bluegass flat pickers are awesome!

  • Masters of their art. Doing what they do. Shred like crazy

  • Townes is grinning big time.

  • Wheres mycowboy boots,I want a semi !

  • guess this would be great on Rock Band

  • this messed my mind up bad when I first saw in on ACL!

  • IMPRESSIVE!!!

  • Fleck looks like the little brother of the group

  • Pat the solo on this song must have come from above.

and the stop at 2:21!!! so good

  • thank god it says "newgrass" cause its about as BLUEgrass as John Lennons dead rotting big toe.

  • Hi !

I seen these guys in Toulouse France in 1982 !!!!

  • Are those guys even human, or are they secret NASA area 51 super-duper computer generated pickers? holy cow!

  • Now that is good music and pickin!

  • Yeh! Townes Van Zandt!

  • 6 people wish they were mandolins

  • Fleck looks so disinterested. :P Perfect mix of trad and new bluegrass styles.

  • 6 people are jealous little boys.

  • WOW!!! Too good!

  • You know it's bad news from Houston, half my friends are dyyyyyyinnnn!!

  • It's a shame some people are too close-minded to ever appreciate great music such as this. And Good Lord... Bela Fleck.

  • my mind blows up every time i see this...

  • 6 people will never understand the level of talent on stage here

  • Somebody knows what is the name of the little guitar instrument?

  • @Garypresidente R U Kidding? Its a mandolin. I hope i'm not being stupid 4 answering. I was gonna tell you it was an 8 string git box.

  • @Garypresidente Its a mandolin.

  • Goddamn Pat Flynn is a badass. He knows it too.

  • I miss the Green Acres Music Hall Daze. Bostic NC.

  • sammy is the real bluegrass warrior out of this bunch

  • Yes, thank you Bluegrass Library for all of your posts. Date and place would be helpful, and always appreciate your including musicians' names. The boys sure are young here. It just hit me this summer the song about junk., not a choo choo train. Then I learned 'twas Townes. No wonder.

  • It would be really nice if we could get a date and a credit -- it does look like Austin City Limits; does anyone know when? It's dated 2007, well after the band broke up and stopped looking quite that young.

Answering the comment about the banjo's "tone" -- he has it capo'd at about the 5th fret, that changes the tone somewhat.

  • Musicianship par excellence! About the best I've seen. Thanks.

  • Man Bela last break was amazing! I love his tone here. His banjo doesn't sound like that anymore.

  • @HillbillyJ that's because he's doing new things, and being a lot more innovative now. Bela's only become a better musician.

  • @stickfiguregum Yes Bela has become a better musician and I like the music he is doing now, I think he is playing much higher forms of music. My point is his TONE is different. He is using different micing and it really doesn't suit his banjo(s) as well as this setup does. Still sounds good though.

  • sweet! looks like austin city limits

  • Did townes write this?

  • @cantarooots Yep, he sure did. The best songwriter ever to grace this planet! I love NGR's interpretation of the song here. Amazing musicianship!

  • @Annagrace13 Thanks a lot, wasnt sure if it wasnt a Van Zandt original or not. And I agree, these guys do an amazing rendition.

  • headbangin mandolin player!

  • Every time John Cowan and Sam bush sing together, an angel gets its' wings.

  • I can't believe there are 4 guys who don't like this vid!!!!! NGR rocks!!!

  • Great song Townes!

  • I'd 5 star this if I could. Too bad youtube sucks. Sweet video though.

  • vicious!

  • Pat is BADDDD! Play it son.

  • White Freightliner + Bela Fleck = peace of mind. For me, at least. Hope u r as lucky as I am.

  • oh man, these guys could play. wicked, wicked good musicianship.

  • @wankatronic You're from new englad btw

  • @KingJohnIV haha you might think so from saying "wicked" twice but no, sorry, i'm not. :D

  • @wankatronic haha oh man! where ya from? if ya dont mind me asking lol jus wondering where you got "wicked" from :P

  • @KingJohnIV im from the midwest, have a good friend from college from Boston. i picked it up from hanging out with him.

  • @wankatronic Haha, funny. I have a friend from college at UMass Amherst who's from wisconsin and we got him saying it too

  • Wicked.

  • That's Bela Fleck aged about three I'd guess. Shit that guy can play...

  • @TheBitterWeed: Is Bela Fleck on the banjo or guitar (both outstanding....but that guitar is flat outragous!)

  • Thanks. One of them is my nephew.

  • @Harpenfarker that's Pat Flynn on guitar.

  • @510631: WELL......Pat Flynn is a BADD ASS!

  • Bela is on the banjo

  • If there IS a God, why don't they have bluegrass in Kabul ?

  • @TheBitterWeed : These guy's were SOMTHIN ELSE!!......Are you in Kabul?

  • No, have pals out there though....

  • @TheBitterWeedL Please tell them their bravery is awsome and THANKS!

  • Wow, this is sweet. The playing is so tight.

I like the look Sam and Pat give Bela at the

start; it's like "Damn, that boy can pick!"

Compared to the others Bela is almost a statue.

Everyone else is bobbing and weaving all over.

  • Man, I recorded this from Austin City Limits back when it came out in the early '80s and WORE OUT that VHS tape! Epic.

  • I have just SEEN the light.

  • all my freinds in New Mexico dig NGR!!

  • Did Sam make a deal with the Devil, cause he doesnt look any different.Everyone else has aged from then to now.....Talk amongst ya selves!

  • man that bass line is funky...

  • @TheJamdolinPlayer its such an awesome bassline! I covered the song with my bass guitar. check it out on my channel! Cheers!

  • omg when the lead guitarist came out I thought it was Angus Young!!! looks and acts like em!!!

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • Except much beter.

  • These guys are gods...

  • hands down the best ever!!!

  • Jesus Bela

  • Saw these guys from the very beginning in Louisville Ky.The absolute best New Grass..Bought my son all their records to learn the licks and appreciate the music.

  • the acoustic player melted my face

  • mine too lol

SHIT bluegrass people have some real skill!!

  • Ahh the many days I would head out hitchhiking with the my son and our dog, backpack the guitar and usually a mini entourage in tow.

Singing this song usually brought us luck in getting a ride.

Wish I could take a trip back in time. Didn't know that despite being poor I was the richest person on earth standing there in the middle of nowhere waiting for destiny to arrive.

    Shelley

Great balls of fire is the second or thrid song on the first disk! You might be able to find it on amazon.....or even itunes if you have an ipod....but its worth buyin

  • It's on the live record they did with Leon Russell. I just saw it in the store the other day. Try Amazon.

  • What an inspiration to all

    up and coming puppy Dawgs!

    Banjoistically yours,

    Jon Eric

  • please do a reunion tour!

  • live at the quick is a awesome dvd. Everything about that show is great. not saying that in a rude tone what so ever. I think you maybe need to just watch that maybe 2 or 3 more times then you'll understand it's elements.

  • Townes Van Zandt wants to thank you boys and so do I. This was a great Bluegrass Band for sure.

  • i like this side of bela more

  • Me too its more down to earth but still COMPLEX!! though

  • very amazing

  • Bela is a true innovator on banjo. I can't say I like everything he does, but hey, I did'nt like everything any of my favorite artists did. These 4 guys are top shelf bluegrass artisans. Loved Pat Flynn's guitar work on anything they did.

  • Sam and Bela are at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival every year and they are both incredible! Scott is usully there, as well, though not as much in demand as Bela and Sam. John Cowan is a favorite of many of the ladies and appears occasionally, as well.

  • I have always thought that Bela Fleck tries way too hard. I don't think anything he plays sounds worth a damn. What Sam Bush is playing now with Scott Vestal sounds 100 times better than this.

  • Gee i wonder where scott took most his style from? Keep your negative comments to yourself and stop proving your an idiot and get ready for Bela to win some more grammys

  • I respect what you have to say, but Bela Fleck is very innovative, if not a genius altogether. What may sound better to you may seem simple and unschooled to many, which is why Bela is cited as such an inspiration to not only the greatest banjo players of today, but also as a jazz master. That being said, I like Scott Vestal, too, but I can't safely compare them.

  • I'm not even a "fan" of Bela's per se, but his banjo playing always sounds great to me!

  • Bela's just kind of quiet guy, intense while playing. Bela's just gone into the zone, that's why you hear more Vestal. And remember this video is OLD, Bela was just starting to come into his own then. Watch the DVD "Live at the Quick", that may change your mind.

  • ok i've got live at the quick, and it is absolutely awful. I mean this video here is alright, he still does that stupid head bobbing thing, but the breaks are OK. That b/s live at the quick sounds awful. The only good part of that whole dvd is when victor plays amazing grace on the bass.

  • I guess beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. The interplay late in the video with Bela and the Indian drummer is unbelievable.

  • NGR is to bluegrass what Queen is to rock. They are to bluegrass what Iron Maiden are to metal. They are, simply put, legends.

  • great lead by Pat Flynn-Everyone's waiting for the reunion tour!

  • This is killer! go Bela!!!!!!

  • Joke told by Flynn at a NGR performance. Goes something like this. "Sam just got us a new record contract we're real proud of. Works like this. Sam gets us three records a year. If we like 'em, we keep 'em and send in 15 bucks. If not, we send 'em back."

  • hey bluegrass....where you from? gotta be KY i've loved them since the new grass alliance with curtis....i'm tom timberlakes boy for christ sakes.......oh by the way please find me one tin soldier by the alliance PLEEEEEEASE

  • i concur with troatmuscles - best ive ever seen/heard - tyvm
