  • my band has this warm up this year, i love it! gets our blood pumping for the show!!

  • @raven87adams There actually is a score.

  • @UltravioletRae4 unfortunately I got a friend who thinks all music is annoying and sucks.

  • love to get the score for this

  • @triforcenou They're in the audition books. My high school band has these warm ups. They're extremely hard to play at first but they do the job well. Haha

  • one word....MAGESTIC!!!!!

  • i just love this. just being there would be exciting...then again i'd probably crap my pants from the amazing sound, and again after the excitement. so i guess it'd be a bad idea for me to be there in general :D

  • Still gets me everytime.

  • Close Encounters? FTW?

  • Jesus. That note at 2:22 isn't an overtone. He actually played that loud.

  • Start:: brass= same fingering for all harmonics.... Starting from 0, 2, 1, 12, 23. Then back up. Then drop 2 octaves

  • can anyone give me the notes for the beginning of this warm up? I want to try it

    (:

  • @OsKerable yes.... ffff :)

  • my high school marching band plays these too

  • Finally a recording with a nice cut off!

  • wow just like wow these guys are crazy

  • From a Cavies fan: this is excellent.

  • @Keitel87 Haha I would have never seen that coming! :)

  • @Keitel87 from a Blue Devil fan, Cavies are badass

  • I literally got chills man. No joke

  • it sounds so together ! i would want to meet them someday!

  • what kind of mouth peices do the trumpets use?

  • that gave me chills

  • beast as hell even if you r just into their line

  • Then is it really a blue devil warm up?

  • ahh touche'

  • ah i love space progression

  • I <3 space chords!!! =D

  • i want the music!!! post it please!!!!!! O.o

  • Contact John Mehan. Good luck though.

  • Write it by ear, it's not that hard.

  • Just Google space chords sheet music, it'll bring up a site that you can print it off of.

  • @thewhiteblur7 do you have a link for this site??

  • so much wind control.

  • we do that too..i think..i really dont pay attention to the winds as much as the battery

  • Chills....every time.

  • we do this warm up with our band :) but were not nearly as good as that o.O

  • very nice..reminds me of my days in high school...damn that was 10 years ago

  • i just remember it being from close encounters of the third kind i think its called "the diolauge"

  • god i love this warmup

  • oh my god that is freaking beautiful!

  • gota love the baritones/euph with chords

  • gotta love john williamssss.

  • Does anyone actually have music to this? Yes I realize it's copy righted and cannot be bought but fan made versions exist. If you own a copy could you send it to me? Message me for my email. Thanks.

  • Fucking EPIC!

  • i love space music :D

  • wow this is crazy.

I wish my marching band had a warmup like this

  • Well, then motivate them to get off their asses and spend some time practicing and listening to stuff like this. Tell them to spend less time on their phones text messaging each other and more time with their instruments and see what happens in a year.

  • i text and practice while im on the phone talking to people as i am watching youtube videos :D

  • haha ^

  • screamer huh...bet its scott dean! muaha

  • I came

  • 1:50-2:00 listen to those chords!!!!!!

  • chills at 2:12.

  • He hated it because his band couldn't play it anywhere close to this :D Go BD

    |

    |

    |

    V

  • or just the fact that they always played it so nothing was new and it was just going through the motions. i get it

  • how do u hate it?!!!!! its freakin AWESOME!!!!!

  • You probably play the flute...

  • omg, amazing...i would've shat my pants had i been standing in front there

  • i love this warm up!!

  • WTF

  • They do an Interval Exercise at the beginning, and the chord progression is called "Space Chords". And the high note is most likely a double g above the staff. Also, lol@the staff stopping at a C above the staff. Hahaha, it goes way, way higher man. In fact, it goes infinitely higher, and lower.

There best progression is Across the Stars from '02 I think. They started Space Chords in '04, and I saw that finals night in Denver, but Across the Stars is better.

  • well this is quite the warm up.

  • wats this called?

  • frrakin amazing! i still like phantom the best though.

  • Good job.

  • Man I could listen to this all day and still be amazed.

  • 2:00 omg

  • Ooooo...Myyyy.....Goooood!!!! I think I have a hard-on...*lifts laptop just to see* YEP HARD AS A ROCK....LOL!!!!! The sound around the 2:00 mark was just amazing....and that last chord ORGASMIC...I've never cried when I cum until just now. LMMFAO

  • this and Phantom's Sanctus (Canon in D), are hands down the best warmups to listen to

    Amazing

  • At 2:12, I think I wet myself

  • I've been trying to think of a word that describes this clip--YES.

  • I agree

  • omg that cutoff!!! WOW...

  • space chords thing is much more fun to listen to especially when you have a relatively good eighth grade band

  • Awesome warmup... :D

  • loved it

  • amazing...i want my band to warm up like that!

  • sounds like close encounters at 1:50

  • I do believe it is

  • WOW...the intonation on the open fifths, the high B-Flat in the sopranos is absolutely incredible. I can't even imagine what the sound would be like live.

  • Great, dark sound. Good cutoffs and good volume.

  • oh my dear god the cutoff at the end.....freakishly perfect

  • ahh love the baritones with the dark sound

  • dis band is no joke!!!!

  • Can anyone honestly say this doesnt give them chills? I dont care who is your fav, you have to love this.

  • absolutely fahking sick! horn lines never get tiring to hear when they are capable of things like this.

  • Blue Devils are from Concord, CA.

  • Thanks =)

  • Where is this Drum Corp from?

  • concord California

  • hahh.lmaoo

    yeah that true.lmaoo

  • o and my dad plays trumpet professionally

  • naw man, im right, trumpeter not trumpeteer. trumpeteer is not commonly used, and is not a word.

  • not all trumpet players are assholes so u all know some good ppl play trumpet. Nobody ever said Luis Armstrong was stuck up and he is like best of all time

  • Does anyone have this written out?

I figured alot of it out, but I'd like to play it properly.

  • I talked with a pro guy once who said a note is only as high as you make it.

That said, I'm pretty sure that's not a double C. C above the staff maybe, but I'm not sitting here with a tuner. What's more impressive is that they played it in TUNE with everyone else.

  • it was just a C above the staff...thats their highest note...i know...i have it written out

  • Well, when you're a screamer, what is written doesn't always apply. : )

If you listen closely I think you might hear it, because I am hearing it, but ehh, might be a g.

  • Oh yeah, that was definitely WAY up there...

You can hear it best RIGHT after the cut off cuz someone was a hair late, but hey, that note got it's moment!!

BTW, did anyone besides me catch the ET reference in the middle? Or is it obvious and I'm sounding incredibly stupid right now...haha!

  • i believe you mean close encounters of the third kind?

  • Yeah! Got mixed up for a sec...

  • The end makes my blood boil and go crazy. I LOVE IT!!

  • This was just F*ckin SICK!!!

  • I believe he was being sarcastic lol

  • hahahahah

  • Come on it's only a double high C.

  • Yeah we play space chords too and my life would be very deprived without them. Playing them always makes my day! Dang i really sound nerdy don't I? lol

  • OMG. this is amazing.

i love how the tubas are playing "MARS" and then the other brass is playing the theme from "Close encounters of the Third Kind"... but yet they're still playing "Space Chords"

    simply phenomenal

  • Ok, I never realized that that was the theme from "Close Encounters..." probably because I have never seen the movie. At any rate, we have a former BD member as an Asst. Director. We play Space Chords, and I did not make the connection. I should be ashamed!

  • what makes a space chord?

i read someplace it was all notes in half step intervals...

  • The bending of the knees has nothing to do being lightheaded or playing loud. If they were lightheaded, then their feet would be apart, and they can play just as loud standing up.

In DCI, they use this technique of bending the knees and leaning back for visual effect, and it just makes them look cool (notice that some aren't doing it cause they aren't as cool...lol). Also, it's fun to do.

  • pedal note section at start is really neat

  • These guys just blow my face off... Haha

  • OMGOSH! That was just their warm up! haha wow that's amazing. can't wait to try out

  • Why do they bend there legs near the end? You can see most of the group doing it. Just wondering if anyone knows why?

  • because they're playing loud as all hell that's why lol. it might not seem like it from the sound of this video but you just can't appreciate the volume of sound that is coming out of that hornline unless your actually there standing in the middle of it. if you ever have a chance to see BD perform live go watch their hornline warm up in the parking lot before their show, it's awesome.

  • I'm just asking is it just for playing louder or just to keep balence

  • i dont think it really benefits their playing any, it's just kind of a natural reaction when you're playing that loud. i know i have a tendancy to arch my back when im screamin or playing loud, as do the vast majority of brass players. sorry if that doesn't make much sense, my college's bball team just made the sweet 16 and im celebrating with some friends and a handle of rum =D

  • can anyone tell me how to send sheet music to someone through youtube?

I know the notes and rhythms to the beginning warm-up if anyone wants me to write it out for them.

  • The warm up in the beginning literally took me no more than a couple of minutes to figure out.

  • NotoriusGidg, if you want the music for this just tranpose it for your band. our director encourages us to do this(especially our jazz band). it seems difficult at first, but now if we feel like playing part of a past DCI show we tranpose it on the spot; it really passes the time on rehersal days.

  • hah at 1:22 it looks like people waving lighters

BD have the best warm ups in drum corps

  • yea you guys take cavies and BD too much!

theyre both one of the best musical ensmbles in the world!

    enjoy the damn video

  • This video inspires me. Every time I see it, I want to run upstairs and practice my trumpet and not stop until I get awesome enough to join a Corp.

  • Anyone know where I can get the music for this exercise? I thought it would be easy to figure out, but I guess I'm just a tard. It costs money to get it off the Blue Devil's website.

  • i know where to get F tuning and the space progression.

the lip slurs(?) though, i dont. my friend is arranging one though (:

  • Damn. If your friend ever gets down to arranging it, can you drop me a line? I'd be eternally grateful.

  • It costs money because that's one of the way the corps supports itself... go earn a few dollars and consider it a donation for the corps, and know that you helped buy some bus fuel to get the Devils down the road in 2008!

  • Fun? There's all types of fun. Depends upon how much effort YOU put into the event (Drum Corps or Soccer). My son/euphonium & oldest daughter/guard marched BD (1996 thru 2000). The 12-hour daily practices during summer (1 day off a month) is demanding; but they also performed in Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Korea, and Australia. Just my 2 cents worth. Greg - former BD staff photographer, and F.I.F.A (soccer) referee (Germany, Turkey, & USA)

  • Never call it a "band" *glares*

  • Yea You guys it's definately not a "marching" band.. theres a 135ish altogether but it's like 65ish horns i think....didn't they just up the sizing for d1's though?

  • dude space chords rock so much.

  • I LOVE this warm - up

  • they make me proud to play brass

  • i <3 BD, the first warm up is so fun to play :)

  • lmao these are the warmups on our packets o_o playing these on the trombone is fun x)

  • SPACE CHORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I may sound stupid for asking this, but im a little inexperienced. What is warming down? How does it help you get better? I'm trying to get to be a better player and any help would be appreciated.

  • Warming down is basically the opposite of warming up. It helps save your chops so you aren't dead the next time you play, especially if you've played a lot that day.

Different bands warm down different ways.

  • warming down protects the nerves in your lips. It also allows you to play more, because it reduces muscle soreness in your lips. Its really not nessecary for regular band, but if youve been blasting during a marching show, then you need to do it.

  • How do you do it? Is there a specific way or do you just do it without a set way? Once again I really appreciate it.

  • playing pedal tones is the best way because the larger vibrations relax your lip muscles. i know someone who never warmed down and has killed the nerves in their lips. they'll never be able to play a brass instrument again.

  • the other possiblility is that you lose all sensation on your lips. Both suck, although never playing again, much more so

  • i appreciate your help. It would really suck if i could never play my t-bone again. I just want to say congratulations to my high school band for winning 1st and best in our division at the Northwest Mississippi marching classic today! Once again thanks for all the help

  • The Marching band i'm in could pwn joo!!! :P just kidding. But great job on winning your division. You must have worked extremely hard. What band are you in?

  • to be completely honest, your band probably could own us. We are going though a change in directors, and it is getting by the day. it is the senatobia high school band in senatobia mississippi. but there is a AA band in mississippi you need to check out if you can find out how. Lewisburg high school, they are frikin AMAZING. and for a 2a school, even better.

  • just play notes that get succesively lower (down to pedal tones), very soft. Start at a low note, and go as low as you can, as soft as you can, then do it again, even softer.

Thats how we do it in my marching band. We usually start on low concert B-flat

  • How many Members are in this Band?

  • I love how this brass line can take your breath away with the air they put through their horns.

    i love this band.

  • too bad it's not a band... it's a drum corps, which generally resents being called a band. it's just the culture. i should know, i marched one...

  • anyone know who the person directing this warm up was?

  • john meehan. he's a god

  • he made our show music. hes a genus he always makes badass music

  • we play a similar warm up

  • i play the trumpet for my local high school band and we have a superhero show this year. i play first part and our show is kind of demanding and we have to go to a high e at the end. and we play cs and bs throughout the whole show.. i didnt have a problem at first hitting them.. but now it seems like i cant. any suggestions in increasing my range back to where it used to be?

  • Umm...you may want to take a day off from playing or more if you dont already.

  • Warm up longer, then warm down longer. When warming down you should play as loud and blatty and low as possible LOOOOOOONG tones.

If you feel like your warm up/down time isn't much of an issue then you should deffinetly take a day or two off from playing if you already don't. Hope that works for you.

  • yea.. i tried that and i thouhgt that it would work. i took about 2 weeks off then came back and its the same way.. i dont know what happened. but i think ima try the warm down technique.. i dont ever warm down. i need to start thanks a lot guys.

  • AH!!! the video won't load!!

  • You probably just don't know the joy of making music or playing something that others couldn't even think of playing. PWND!

  • even regular high school marching band is hard, your outside all day for band camp for who nows how many weeks and your marching and running, you are exhausted after the day :( It is pretty hard and drumcor is even harder. My parents make me do it, :( but i have to admit it is cool to play pretty music and watch videos of the show

  • i think your using "fun" in the wrong context. its not that drum corps is fun, its extreamly rewarding. that feeling you get after walking off the field after that perfect show and knowing all the work you put into it, thats what keeps people coming back to do it again next time. not to mention the joy of playing their instruments and the friends that you make on the road.

  • ya he explained it PERFECTLY

  • The thing that draws me to it so strongly is the feeling of ultimate physical exhaustion I LOVE that, it makes me feel like I really did something, like I deserve soemthing in life. I love the feeling as my body recovers, the aching in my muscles, and the loud ROAR! of the audiance as I march off the field.

  • i agree. its the feeling of accomplishment, the knowing that you gave your all that makes it worth it

  • I think drum corps is fun! Maybe I just hang around fun people in a fun corps, but I have a great time no matter how hard it is

  • regardless oh which is more difficult (it all really depends on the level at which your talking) drumcorps is very difficult. Soccer is just running and kicking. Marching uses muscles in your legs that you never otherwise use. Marching emphasizes control over raw power

  • you forgot about the part of holding your breath for 12 minutes while doing all that. its not like you can breathe while your playing your horn, and i wouldnt be surprised if someone in drum corps is in better shape than a soccer player.

  • ok. once youve actually been in a drum corp then say it is not physically productive.
