Here's a little tip for people with auto tranny's. When you are sitting at a red light and the light turns green, give 1 or 2 seconds after releasing the brake to let the car crawl from the torque convertor (free momentum), then press the gas.
When you were at that long light, you should have killed your engine. I have one light to wait for on my way home (left turn) and it's about 2 mins. So I kill my engine and just as the cross traffic left turns yellow, I restart.
you are retarded. not only your engine will die of suffocation(rly, engine will fill up with dirt and die), your transmission is going 300km/h to its death coz it actually never catches gear, just hunts between them and, being slow in traffic makes everyones nerve to snap, so you are dangerous also.
and btw, you didnt turn of the engine at red light. that drank up all of your "saved" fuel. if you wanna think you're right, get a manual, it can be driven on idle-600-800rpm
If you are really serious about hypermilling, get a manual gear car and try to know the efficiency curves of your engine for the gears available so you know when to change and accelerate.
when cruising hit the clutch or keep a high gear.
american cars are made for cheap gas... which it is when compared to the prices in europe.
PS. Rpms are part of the consumption problem, but more important than rpms is the accelerator position. Because you can be at 5000rpms breaking with the engine and not wasting any gas. Hence, in flat terrain, sometimes it's better to accelerate normally and then keep a high gear and low accelerator.
Oh, and I drive a 96 Lincoln Town Car, a supposed gas guzzler, with an estimated 17 MPG city, but I get around 20.6 MPG's in town, because I drive responsibly, and that's with a really dirty air filter. Ooohh, I can't wait to get a new K&N air filter for it! 22 MPG's, here I come!!
I also hypermile myself, and I am rather RPM conscious, (even though my car has no odometer, just listen to the engine) but I don't concern myself with going over a set RPM measure. If I go over 2000 RPM's, then so be it, but I am saving in the long run, because my car gets to speed faster, and at that point, I can let off the accelerator, and just maintain speed. THAT's where your gas mileage is, in your speed. Always obey the speed limits, folks!
@MrApostle89 Exactly! We berely get any gas mileage when we accelerate anyway, so it's best to get to the top gear as quick as you can (without mashing it at the same time). There's even some MPG graphs that show better FE when you accelerate to the top gear asap, more MPG's earlier rather than much later.
gas gauges are not accurate. when the needle says you have only used a quarter tank, its really closer to half a tank. its called a GAUGE for a reason, not a METER.
