listen go to settings then sounds and turn off the lock screen sound! i thought there was some thing wrong so i was reallly releived! i had the exact same noise!
worst case that doesnt work, try restarting your iphone 4. mine is also new
I decided not to take it back. People are having a lot of other problems that I have not yet had so I figured this hardly ever makes the noise and that is the only problem ive had with it

That's the exact noise that mine made when I got it wet. You just need to turn it off and leave it over night and the problem should go :)

That's the microphone. I wouldn't know why its activated by sleep/waking your iPhone.

thats not a problem! its audio problems (signal interuptions)
it happens to my phone it makes noises like that when u have it by speaker etc,
because of signal interruption
