I moved to Austin in 76 to attend trade school. The 70s in Austin were some super fun times 4 me . Do any of you remember the little tiny bar on South Congress Willie used to own ? It was near where the Continental Club is now. It was small but within walking distance of where I lived back then. So was the Armadillo. I was so broke back then I mostly hung out in The Armadillo beer garden listening to the bands. It was muffled but I did hear some of the best bands in history through that wall.
@austintxlivemusic All three of his brothers are on Facebook , 2 were in the band-- They had nicknames for years. Moses (David) Manry, Gideon (Peter) and Baron (Bob) the youngest. Baron Played with Moses somewhat later I believe. The elder brother, Mike is a physicist and does not to my knowledge play music . They came from the Houston area but in the early 70s all lived in Austin. I knew Gideon, Mike & Baron quite well but only met Moses a few times.
i used to date the original drummer of Asleep at the Wheel ... Scott Hennige. Think he's up north .. CT or VT?? Home anyway. His daughter would be around 32 - 34 by now, like mine. Scott & I worked together too ... in Austin. :-) Dated Willie Nelson's drummer's son, too .. Darrell Wayne English. Heard he was happily married, in Austin but that was more than 35 yrs ago! LOL
Jimmie's younger brother, was Stevie Ray Vaughan As a founding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, "Jimmie" Vaughan was one of the leading Austin, TX guitarists of the late '70s and '80s, For most of his career, Vaughan co-led the Fabulous Thunderbirds with vocalist Kim Wilson. It wasn't until 1994 that he launched a full-fledged solo career.
No not one in the same, they were brothers-Jimmy was the oldest and the first one out there playing around Texas, don't know when SRV started playing around here
Why did you leave Austin? You should of brought this band to Cleveland, I know you know this kind of sound was hot here back then. Good luck on finding him again.
Time for me to post since I was the Audio Tech who recorded all this fine music. Rick kept me from sleeping by using our living room as a practice studio so I made myself useful & recorded some of it. We still keep in touch in fact went to his mountain retreat last summer, best of friends, like a brother to me. Sure am glad I made those tapes Rick or this would be lost to the world forever TTYS Bro.Scott
I still remember the day you did it like it was yesterday. Don't guess you still have that recorder do you? If so you should sell it on E-bay! ... not many 8-Track recorders around these days I'd say!
You know that really picked up the sound pretty good except for the vocals. But we both know the vocals are a story all its own, right bro?
Did you see WiseGeorges post of what the Onekite looks like now?
What you are listing to is Elynn (Moses's ex-wife) playing bass and singing, the band was a trio then. Moses's brother (Gideon) took over playing bass about a year in to it. It took on a much better sound then, but I've no recordings of Gideon playing with us. All of these songs where recorded just months after we 1st got together. I'm not even going to touch the story on the vocals.
well, i know a lot of the folks on that list are still actively playing Austin. some are dead. i imagine you know about most of them. not sure i can help with some of the unknowns. best of luck. . .
I remember the band called "To Smooth" but they were just a copy band that played the bars around here. I never saw you guys but I do know where the OneKite was. And I think I've seen that poster before for Moses, I belive I've seen it on a pole down on the drag on Guadaupe St.
I've listended to all your other songs you posted! Like WOW man...what a guitar player that guy is! You REALLY should have kept this band together!!!
I was wondering if you had any more of this guys stuff. He was or is, one hell of a guitar player that is for sure!!!
He has the most original sound of anyone I've heard for many years. Hope he is found and still playing! Someone needs to sign this dude on! He may not be Jimi...but damn is he awesome! Sorry I'm not from Austin so I don't know any thing about any of those bands ect. for Willie and Asleep At The Wheel.

Makes me wonder what ever became of all the bands that I used to play with in my home town in Vermont....
Cool video and a great time capsule!

Anyone know when Jimmy Vaughn first started playing around Ausitn? and his brother SRV, when did he start playing the Austin venue's?
Never heard of Moses, but he has a pretty cool sound
ScrapForGold 3 years ago
Google SRV...Wikipedia has the whole story
PushN90 3 years ago 16
About the same time as this was I would think.
He is on the list of bands as Jimmy Vaugnn & T-Birds, so that was pretty early. Think SRV came out just after that time. Mid to late 70's early 80's
GreenEarthLink 3 years ago 6
SRV was in Austin at least by 1977, maybe earlier - I remember seeing him then - - -

Johnny Dee & the Rocket 88's (still doing it!)
Asleep at the Wheel (still around, i think - won 'band of the year' in Austin in '07)
Marcia Ball (still doing it - put out an album this year '08)
Alvin Crow (still plays in town!)
Ray Wylie Hubbard (still plays in town!)
Doug Sahm & The Texas Tornandos (Doug's son Shandon currently can be seen playing around town)

Other than Willie I don't think any of these bands are around Austin any more. Now days its all that punk hip hop head banging crap!
Will most of it...there are still lots of fine bands in Austin, both rock and country.
This Moses dude sounded pretty dang good, bummer ya'll never made it big. Good sound there!
