Great looking pizza! Sally and I just tried the beer.....I guess 10 to 10.5% alcohol is my limit. While complex, I just felt she had too much alcohol going on. I think the malt and alcohol stepped on my hops. Saying that....it was a treat.
@rjsimone1 Since the beer is a "double" I used the oversized wine glass, like I do for many bigger beers. It's definitely a good beer no matter what glass it's in. Cheers!
@Batman9571 Andre has been with me for 25 years so he's had A LOT of beer. But, just counting these reviews I've been doing I'd have to guess that maybe 10-15 beers?
@paintballer05 The recipe is basically a regular pizza crust with regular old pizza sauce (I used Trader Joes' version). I cooked up some sausage as well as some green and yellow peppers. The cheese was a "5 cheese" mix that I got at trader Joes. Other than that there's nothing special about how I prepared it except for cooking it on the Big Green Egg (over indirect heat). Thanks for watching!
this is definately my favorite offering from flying dog...i'm not a huge fan of the company, but they did very well with this one!!! i've never had the gonzo, i'm not a big porter fan, but might have to try it if yall think it is better than this...
This brew was like a hop explosion in my mouth. I do recommend it to any and all though I still have to say flying dog will forever have a hard time in trying to top their Gonzo Imperial Porter.
i bought a 4-pack of this beer today...it was really nice. It smells like an IPA (more specifically it reminded me of Stone IPA). In regards to taste, it actually had a sweet aftertaste. It reminded me of a barley wine. I'm assuming the high abv adds to the sweetness
I think the sweetness comes from the malt which is added in higher quantities to counteract the hops and to get a higher ABV. It is a tasty beer for sure.
I saw ur review on this beer and decided to give it a try. I have just finished my first bottle and agree totally w/ you. I am really impressed w/ the flavor and pleasantly suprised to not have too much of an alcohol flavor w/ it being 11.5%. It is not at all overly bitter even w/ 85 IBU. I will be buying more of these to go w/ dinners. I think this beer will go perfect w/ seafood, italian or beef.
Do you work for BGE? U should be on their payroll :) I'm now wanting one!
Glad you liked the beer! It is very good and you are correct, it does hide the ABV very well. I think it would go great with beef off the grill. I'll need to try that sometime.
I love my BGE, it is a fantastic grill/smoker. Let me know if you want some help with a BGE purchase, I'll be glad to help youout as much as possible.
I didn't notice any sediment but will look next time. Sediment usually does add to the flavor of the beer. I like to think of it as all the good stuff at the bottom of the bottle.
I love this beer. I picked it up on a whim one day and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Now it's been in regular rotation for me for some months

@pinkync Yeah, it seems that once a beer gets to 10%+ controlling the malt can be a problem.

@glass509 I think the Double Dog is very good. The Gonzo is definitely tasty but if you don't like Porters it might not be the best for you.

I'll have to try some of this. I absolutely love Flying Dog's Snake Dog IPA.

The Gonzo is a very good beer but the Double Dog is pretty good as well. I do like the Gonzo a bit more.

I have a couple bottles of this beer in my fridge now and will be pairing it with bbq chicken. But I like the seafood idea. I'll probably review one.

This is one of my favorites. There usually is some sediment in the bottle, try mixing it in, it does add some flavors.

It is a good beer. I will get more of it but it is heavy/strong so it won't be a regular for me. I'll drink it sparingly.

I've had imperial IPAs, but never just a pale ale. I'd imagine they'd be maltier where as an IPA would be hoppier.
Not a big fan of big beers, but I'm always willing to experiment.
Chad9976 2 years ago
I think this is an "Imperial/Double IPA". With so much alcohol and hops I think the line gets blurred between Pale Ale & IPA.
