  • @skiddo. Thanks, that makes sense considering the last solo sounds like shit and the other are decent

  • Hmm never knew that they had a black Guitarist but sorry to say but he is not the best they had :-(

  • @Pwnuinwow Well he wasn't a technically real member of the band they just needed a guitarist to play lead because the band wasn't fully formed yet.

  • Christ...why didn't Metallica keep Lloyd Grant?

  • @wwerulestna He is still a good player. He should be playing in some new metal band.

  • james sounds sooooooooo much like sean harris in this lol

  • James is totally copping Sean Harris (Diamondhead). Not surprising since he and Lars were total fanboys of that band...

  • those are mustaine style licks. i don't know for sure. i haven't listened to lloyd grant so i'll have to check him out to decide whether i believe the title of this vid.

  • I didn't know this version was different than the no life till leather verions

  • llyod is awesomeness

  • Not sure if Dave sung badly back then or if the record was just very badly recorded

  • @arr4gtr dave wasn't in the band back then it was just james and lars, james also did bass and lloyd grant played the solos lol!

  • Is that James Singing? Doesnt sounds like him AT ALL!

  • @weiner1993 Doesn't sounds like him cause he was only 17 :D He was just a kid. DAMN GOOD KID! :D

  • That was james? Fuck.

  • Who's singing? Mustaine?

  • watch?feature=player_embedded&v=w4t-so6NRtg

  • The song only James wrote, before even entering Metallica, together with Phantom Lord. So, those people who think Dave wrote whole Kill'em All are wrong...

  • Lloyd KILLED this song, and unknowingly created a template for all modern Metal soloing!

  • I'm currently reading Metallica's new book. This was recorded on a Fostex 4 track CASSETTE machine. I'm surprised it sounds this good.

  • what do you think the big bang at the end was? Lars blowing up his tin cans? ;)

  • Nigga can shred ;)

  • @SitotiKurton hear The day that never comes right after this, you'll feel like banging your head on the wall. The things James has done xD

  • its james on bass for all of you fuckheads that didnt know

  • James is possesed by Sean Harris?

  • Lars on Drums

James on 2nd Guitar and Voice

    McGovney on Bass

    Grant on 1st Guitar

    What's so hard to understand?

  • @WMGsuck this is lars on drums, grant on guitar, james on vocals, guitar, and bass. mcgovney wasnt on this because he wasnt in the band yet so james did it.

  • @ScooterAndOtis Ohh I didn't knew that

  • @ScooterAndOtis dude it was lars on drums, mcgovney in bass and james singing the guitar work was lloyds but mustaine was already in the band, lloyd has never been in metallica and dave in his book mentions that he was indignated to see that the guitar work in metal massacre was lloyds and not his but he was already in the band as mcgovney

  • @cripindeth no, mcgovney wasnt in the band nor was mustaine. either way, they didnt play on it. not a big deal, just a fact, check wiki

  • @ScooterAndOtis Everyone here has it wrong. James is on vocals, rhythm guitar and bass. Lars is on drums. Dave plays the two lead breaks at 1:11 and 1:50. Lloyd plays the final solo at 2:56. It's true, Metallica says so, Dave Mustaine has said so, and several biographers have said so. Originally there was no solo at 2:56. This version had already been recorded. Lars decided another solo was needed, but Mustaine wasn't around and the recording had to be taken to get mastered. Lars stopped by...

  • @skiiddo CONTINUED - At Lloyd's house on the way to get it mastered (they were still friends, even after Lloyd was kicked out of Metallica) and asked him to record a solo quickly, and that solo is what you hear at 2:56. Trust me, everyone that knew the band at the time has said it went like that.

  • @skiiddo i actually just learned that ironically. i was reading the ron mcgovney interview so yeah, your right, mustaine wasnt really a member yet though was he? he had just barely got in the band correct?

  • @ScooterAndOtis Yeah, it was still unclear as to whether Dave or Lloyd would be the full time member at this point. But Llyod was unreliably and often missed rehearsals, much like Ron McGovney ended up doing, and in the same way, he lost his role to the more talented and reliable option. It just goes to show that you don't skip damn band rehearsals, I mean... what were Lloyd and Ron thinking? They could be chart-topping billionaires now if they had been more reliable.

  • @skiiddo i dont know abt grant, but the moment james and lars saw burton, ron was out already. wouldnt have mattered if he skipped the rehearsals or did not

  • @skiiddo no it was rons desicion about leaving the band, actually because he had been pissed off with dave mustaine..

  • @skiiddo Yep, this is absolutely accurate. Ron wasn't there. James on vocals, rhythm guitar, and bass. Lloyd plays the lead, and Lars bangs some cans together to make drum noises. ;)

  • @skiiddo

This is going to be random, but ive been seeing your comments everywhere. An hour ago i was watching a Tantara video and i saw your comment there, and now here on a metallica demo and i see another one of comments haha.

  • @TropianTV haha, it's cause we both have an awesome taste in music - tantara for the fucking win

  • @skiiddo you mean metallica had 3 guitarists at that time?? wTf??

  • @MrDR7no no, when dave joined, he was the only guitarist, then Lloyd joined there were 2 guitar players, james started learning, then lloyd was out, i think, dont hold me to it

  • I heard it was James on bass.

  • yeah its Ron Mcgonny on bass

  • hey its Ron Mcgonney ON BASS

  • It can't be James singing!?

  • Comment removed

  • @WhiiplashOne Yes, it is Metallica?! Metal massacre was an demo album where different bands could get sucsess...

  • All the solos are Dave's except the last one, which was recorded by Grant when Metallica were on their way to drop the tape off.

  • Wow. Vince Neil was in Metallica at one point?!?!? :P

  • Eric Cartman @ 1.50

  • CONFUCION: there was a song they did and they had an overdub of either bass or guitar by an african american/jamacian person. I read about it in a Metallica book. Also I guess there is 2 versions of this for the Metal massacre (including a re-issue) and the version in NO LIFE TILL... Because I went to a used record store in another city, heard this, but didnt but that copy of Metal massacre, it was sooooo long ago, I remember it so differently.

  • @MichaelHansenFUN loyd grant was african american. he played on this one.. the second had dave mustaine. the second was different.. no question about it

  • @thrasherlml been a long time since i heard it...

  • HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY!!!!

  • It almost sounds like Diamond Head.

  • @bodom71 Lol that's who James was copying.

  • You can really hear the NWOBHM influence here. Hell, James says "HIt the Lights" like "Shoot out the Lights" (Diamond Head song).

  • i cnt believe this james hetfield... wow..

  • @420megadeth And you're probably right, according to wikipedia^^!

  • This is the first real black metal :DD

  • Fuck this vocals! I bet my guitar that he was just having fun!

  • Lloyd Grant was ONLY hired for this song and quickly replaced by Dave Mustaine, who was replaced in 1983 by Kirk Hammett.

James Hetfield moved to guitar and vocals and his roommate, Ron McGovney was their bassist for a while until they found Cliff Burton, also in 1983.

We all know that Cliff was tragically killed in Sep. 1986 in a bus wreck and Metallica released their last true metal album (aside from Garage Inc.) in 1988.

  • @MaelSechlinn Ron McGovney left metallica because Dave Mustaine poured beer down his bass and when Ron went to play it he got shocked and left because of dave

  • here's something a bunch of y'all don't know, there were 2 releases of the first metal massacre, one had grant and the other had mustaine on it

  • @narfire214

Something we didnt know? I sure as hell did, hence the big " (1st Metal massacre) " in the title.

  • Here's something I don't think anyone has mentioned yet, and that is according to info culled from both "Metallica: Unbound" and Dave Mustaine's autobiography, the only solo Lloyd Grant played was the last one on the first version. Dave had already recorded the first two solos, and someone decided it needed another solo, so they stopped by Lloyd's house on the way to get the demo mastered, and had Lloyd rip out a one-take solo. It's the only time he ever did anything with Metallica.

  • @narfire214 I knew that

  • This is the good shit!

  • @narfire214 I was not aware of that man Thank You

  • @narfire214

any fan would kno that. please stop pretending like u kno something we dont

  • This has Lloyd Grant on it, but Dave said himself that he recorded the song.

  • Wow James didn't know what the fuck he was doing here singing-wise

  • lloyd wasn`t actully in the band, he just made a demo recording with them for the Metal massacre record.

  • Can somebody tell me about Lloyd Grant?i kno nothing about him...ive jus heard the name before...

  • @skwisgaar821 Well he was Metallica's Original Guitar Player, just before Dave Mustaine in 1981 - 82' I think...

He was a great guitar player, but he left Metallica in 1982.

Also in this song James plays bass...

  • @TrafficMind10 nope, he was with james in leather charm, but not metallica

  • wow lars sucked really hard

  • @ZombieHeavyMetal and he still sucks after 30 years.

  • James Hetfield in the first days of Metallica singed with a clean voice inspired by Sean Harris from Diamond Head

  • He sounds a bit like Robert Plant

  • im reading mustaines book and he said that he recorded the version on metal massacre but for some reason put some of lloyd's guitar parts on it

  • @UnarmedSnowman Lloyd Grant was better than Dave. Thats the only reason there is.

  • It was just 4 years between this and Master of Puppets....James' vocals.....wow...

  • @MrPie455 How could a man change his voice naturally??!! LOL

  • They should put Ron back, he deserves some credit in Metallica, Rob is good, but was better in Suicidal Tendencies, or Rob could go to Ozzy again.

  • @MikeyboyMovies rob was so awesome with suicidal because he could play his funk influences there imagen a metallica with funk elements would be strange

  • It's sounds slow and Lloyd was great, there should have been a rhythm guitarist alone in Metallica.

  • I thought that James did the guitar, bass, and vocals and Lars did the drums, but who did the lead? Is it that Lloyd Grant guy your talking about? I'm pretty sure I'm right because it said that on the behind the music and if you do your research it'll say the same thing. They just had james do bass, vocals, guitars, and lars on drums because they had to hurry up and get the song done so it could get put on the record.

  • @downfan1 Yh Lloyd was on lead guitar .

  • I thought that James did the guitar, bass, and vocals and Lars did the drums, but who did the lead? Is it that Lloyd Grant guy your talking about?

  • @DonLduk why?

  • You can really hear a Burke Shelly and Robert Plant quality in James' voice on this recording, freaking awesome.

  • @devilcj666 Agreed! he sounds like Plant for sure. I actually prefer this over Kill Em All

  • who let justin beiber sing metallica songs lol jp

  • Sounds like Vince Neil

  • @DonLduk mustaine never sang goddamn

  • sounds like Diamond Head

  • This is the only good metallica lineup

  • hetfield on the bass?

  • @queenville hetfield wasnt a very experienced guitar player yet so lloyd played guitar and there were only 3 band members for the demo, lars-drums, james- vocals only, and lloyd guitar

  • @andrewds98 wikipedia says that james played bass and you can hear a bass there as well, but actually i was replying to the guy who said this is the only good metallica lineup

  • @queenville oh i understand now thanks.... wikipedia can be wrong sometimes but idk if that part is or not

  • @andrewds98 james did play bass in that recording. they didnt have mcgovney yet so james decided to play bass in this recording and have grant and mustaine be the guitar players

  • @Waleedzilla Last I knew, Mcgoveny was in the band when they met Lloyd Grant.

    metallicaworld.co.uk/Interviews/1997_ronmcgovney.htm

    Just search Lloyd.

That should stop everyone from saying James played bass on the album. Still a great musician though. Just clearing up the facts.

  • Lovely this version!

  • LLOYD > Dave

  • Shit the lights !

  • Fuck ya Lloyd is killer!!!

  • LLoys is killer!

  • @DonLduk You are a dumb-ass poser . Who does not know shit ! Mustaine wrote the song , but Hetfield sang it at that show . Mustaine did the intro to the song and the outro to the song .Everybody is telling you are wrong . So listen .

  • james sounds like King Diamond with his nuts in a vice

  • @nando88

  • Anyone else hear a serious deal of diamond head in the vocals?

  • @PcaKestheaod Real serious Diamond Head style vocals!

  • JAMES ?! wow

  • Just think, in 1982, Lars Ulrich was showing this song to Dave Mustaine... this VERY song..

  • james sounds badass here :D

  • @facelift420 kurt? lol

  • Sick of all the bitchin' about Dave and Kirk.....we all heard about the thrash 4 sonisphere concert. Dave and Metallica have put their differences aside, as should all the people bitchin' and just see these guys as the amazing musicians that they are.

    Rock. the fuck. on.

  • @nolifetillleather6 absolutely true

  • @nolifetillleather6 and now the two camp can stop debating about whoes better

  • @nolifetillleather6 well i'm doubtful they have. i'm sure kirk doesn't care at all. but it seems to me mustaine still holds a grudge judging by his attitude when they did the "am I evil" 4 bands thing. really the big 4 concerts was probably commisioned by metallica and the other bands signed on because they really need money. like its pretty damn obvious metallica holds the cards in these concerts considering they're way WAY more commercial than the other 3

  • good solo great lloyd grant

  • it sounds a lot like budgie or diamond head. is it a cover of their song or just a sound like style wise cause they were big fans of them?

  • @elfquest108

it said in the dave mustiane book that the reason dave got to gether to meet was because he found a newspaper ad that a band was looking for a guitarist, and it said one of their influences were budgie and dave and lars were big fans of them

  • james sounds like a child, and lloyd grant is actually good lol

  • @PrepsAndEmosSuck No, he doesn't. Trust me, I'm a child, my voice is much lower than that.

  • james sounds like a child

  • heh pre pubebecent james... lol

  • big metallica fan here, but i just think this sucks. the recording quality is horrible, you can;t hear the bass drum, and, well, then there's hetfield's voice.

  • @JohnTheRipper2 the production was really bad xD but the song had a lot of attitude so it worked.

  • @JohnTheRipper2 this was from the early 80's before pro tools or anything this was a demo. as far as james he was influenced by diamond head judas priest etc so that explains the voice

  • so that would be lloyd grant doin the guitar solo then right?

  • This version is awsome this rocks. It sounds kick ass like this.

  • meTTallica .

  • Holy shit talk about allegiance to Diamond Head

Even his vocal runs are the same! James sounds exactly like him in this.

  • i love this version

  • its more nwobhm'ish this way than in kill em all....

  • james voice sounds funny, but still kicks ass

  • now i can understand brian slagels remarks on this version being the worst recording on an album ever. still , songs got attitude

  • Sounds like the lead singer of diamond head.

  • @Roxxxxxxxbottttter Thats what James was trying to do

  • Wow, that is the original version from Metal Massacre? History, thanks for that!

  • Tahnk you for sharing this piece of history...

  • James voice is awesome.. HIT THE LIGHTS lol \m/

  • Shit I really need to upload the bootlegs from Ron's garage on here. I fought to the death on Ebay for Garage days 2 and took it for $65. "KILLED EM ALL"

  • @gerby90 I wonder why James would say (no matter what) that his current bandmate was better than the bandmate he fired... oh wait...

  • lol.the drums sound like a 60s set.

    but still cool

  • @gerby90 where did you find this i want to see

  • James and Lars were only 18 when this was recorded.

  • I wonder what Metallica would be like today with Lloyd and Ron still in the band?

  • @rageagainstboxhead

Propably same as now. Except, Ron can't play a shit.

  • @rageagainstboxhead they wouldve dissolved for sure

  • @gerby90 now why would you say that? Maybe not with ron, but if they had lloyd and cliff.

  • @rageagainstboxhead one can only speculate but without the input of a brilliant basist like Burton, they wouldnt have come further than Kill em All. theyd probly go in another direction, we can only speculate..

  • @rageagainstboxhead well if Lloyd and Ron was in the band Metallica wouldn't have "four horse men, for whom the bell tolls, and other badass songs that made metallica stand out, theyd just be another Diamond head lmao

  • James sounds like shit in this demo :)

  • I think james has changed his voice many times jajajaja

  • It sounds like he's sing like iron maiden.

  • Sounds like Budgie!!!

  • This is where it all started...

    Metal up your ass \m/

  • actually at that time james wasnt any confident.. thats what his voice sounds like that.. he may been nervous then

  • I dont get why some of you guys are comparing kirk and dave to Lloyd, kirk and dave have over at least 100 songs in which they play in and all you've probably heard of Lloyd grant is this 1 minute and a half solo.....

  • @kianneedsalife i know rite ilove how everybody says that Kirk sucks but yet your still listening to Metallica you fucken Dave fan boys

  • DAVE MUSTAINE!!!!!!!

  • Wow, this is pretty bad, I'm not gonna lie. Mainly Jame's voice. But bands have to start somewhere, and its just fucking AWESOME to listen to this recording.

  • Lloyd Grant kicks ass. Better than Hammett, and equally as good as Mustaine

  • this is the greatest version (after kill em all one) of hit the lights, 2nd take is fucked up

  • this is the ORIGINAL metallica

lloyd is a beast, and is it just me or does james sound a bit like robert plant?

  • James is imitating Diamond Head lead singer.

  • nooo it sounds very strange,

  • holy shit james sounds so different

  • Shit Lloyd grant is badass

  • wow it's so funny to hear james sing like this compared to the way he sounds l now

  • i know, right?
