Back in Spring 2001, my band (at the time) and I met these guys before their soundcheck, and performed this very song on stage at CBGB's in NY. My teacher was cool with them, and hooked us up that warm afternoon. They gave us pointers on stage presence and delivering a great live show. I'll never forget it!
I'm not trying to be funny or anything but I've never heard of a band that can play songs using the same chord progression the whole time and have it sounds amazing.
I've heard this band's name for years and heard a couple of songs but am just now really diving into their catalog. This song is amazing! Can any fans recommend a good couple of albums to start off with? It appears they have a huge, vast body of work.
@MegaCrasher3000 GBV has an enormous catalog of music. It can be quite daunting. As a new fan, I'd recommend starting with: 1. The Best of Guided by Voices: Human Amusements at Hourly Rates; 2. Alien Lanes; 3. Bee Season.
mad japanese monks mutter about squeaky wheels and the undeserved amounts of grease they get indeed, but chuckle knowingly and furtively about reports of Bob's wagon remaining apart from the frenetic greaselicious stampede
@8sk8r ahh, c'mon..lighten up. rob does a splendid liam gallagher style courtsey/bow in this one. besides, where else are you gonna see a porn shop right next door to a church supply shop??
I love this song. im only 12 and my dad introduced u guys to me when i was 10 nd i love you guys so much! i listen to u guys everyday and wish i could meet you guys!
GBV, the classic lineup, will out write, out rock, and out class any other band in history or in the future. I should know, I am the one and only Skippy Skywalker and my Art films are the best, beaatches!
Just noticed they both began in '83, that is far too much of a coincidence for me....and they are both 2 of my favorite bands as well, weird how that works.
If you like GBV you should chek out "The Yummy Cookey Oatmills" from walla walla. They have a great song "My Spoon is good for Hardware stores in the afternoon" i think you can find it at "My eyebrows need a trim at walmart dot com"
one of the best bands ive seen live/i saw them on their first uk tour in 95 with the amps supporting them/robert pollard is one of the most creative and prolific and under rated song writers ever//
@guestinformant but what if you have black friends? haha trick question! hey you know how families are nowadays! and i'm black by the way, so no slamming me everybody....

I somehow never saw this video. I can't even count the things I like about it.
I'm also apparently late to the party on one detail: I've never heard "Knife" in this form when was it reproduced this way? Some things I like about the sloppiness of the original, but there are some killer improvements in this version.
this is the "Tigerbomb" EP version, which also has an amped-up version of "game of pricks" on it, plus a couple other cool tunes. the thing i like about this "knife" is the fuzzy guitar....an even-better version than the original!
the director is listed as Banks Tarver. that name also has a credit as directing The Afghan Whigs (from Cincinnati ... an hour south of Dayton) video "1965" besides GBV's "Ironman Rally Song" & "I am A Scientist". there is a Banks Tarver listed in IMDB as producing "This American Life" and a bunch of reality shows. i do not know it to be the same person but it seems possible. i'm betting he is Clay Tarver's (Bullet LaVolta, Chavez) brother which would explain the GBV & Whigs connection.
I will repeat his question, as it seems you do not comprehend it. "Does anyone know who directed it?" I replied, "I am pretty sure the director directed it!" I thought that was pretty funny. Maybe you should dig deep and not take things so literally...you know, enjoy life a little bit, before you die. It is simple. A good laugh doesn't hurt either. Just a thought.
not a fan of this version either. the drum track is too loud, crisp and high-fi. layed over the low-fi sound of the rest of the track, its really annoying to me. the alien lanes version is perfect to me.
to me, this song talks about the emptiness of things and the essence of why we hold on to them even when we know it won't last. "and yeah that's my move"
So much good energy with this band--this a perfect example.
