  • So much good energy with this band--this a perfect example.

  • I buried it and when I went back to get it it was gone, my new life that is.

  • litter bug...

  • Back in Spring 2001, my band (at the time) and I met these guys before their soundcheck, and performed this very song on stage at CBGB's in NY. My teacher was cool with them, and hooked us up that warm afternoon. They gave us pointers on stage presence and delivering a great live show. I'll never forget it!

  • I'm not trying to be funny or anything but I've never heard of a band that can play songs using the same chord progression the whole time and have it sounds amazing.

  • @NirvanaNerd364 So you've never heard of the kinks then? j/k

  • @pahwraith haha yeah guess you're right...........

  • idk, but if he's still doing those high kicks...um, at his age, hip replacement surgery, anyone? ;p

  • @octupletdown I think that was supposed to be Elvis.

  • I've heard this band's name for years and heard a couple of songs but am just now really diving into their catalog. This song is amazing! Can any fans recommend a good couple of albums to start off with? It appears they have a huge, vast body of work.

  • @MegaCrasher3000 GBV has an enormous catalog of music. It can be quite daunting. As a new fan, I'd recommend starting with: 1. The Best of Guided by Voices: Human Amusements at Hourly Rates; 2. Alien Lanes; 3. Bee Season.

  • @MegaCrasher3000 Under The Bushes Under The Stars, Alien Lanes, Bee Thousand and Propeller.

  • 40ozs. and high kicks

  • I'm being dumb here, but what version is this? It's much more hi-fi than on my copy of Alien Lanes

  • @mrdanielsir Tigerbomb EP version. There's also a "hi-fi" version of Game Of Pricks on there.

  • eike musica boa nossa

  • mad japanese monks mutter about squeaky wheels and the undeserved amounts of grease they get indeed, but chuckle knowingly and furtively about reports of Bob's wagon remaining apart from the frenetic greaselicious stampede

  • Lights were presented to us

    we were given a choice

would we flash them at video cameras

would we create a new dream world decreed

would we fumble w/ them childishly

would we drop them decisively as monster riffs heralded the new seconds of our existence?

  • fuck you skillz that killz

  • way postmodern

  • @mediattackrecords

    How so?

  • i feel goofey

  • I wish I could kick behind my head / ass -- 2:06

  • this band is bullshit. the only thing stupider than this band, is the fans.

  • @8sk8r

    lol...cool

  • Comment removed

  • @8sk8r I heard ya lyk mudkipz.

  • @8sk8r ahh, c'mon..lighten up. rob does a splendid liam gallagher style courtsey/bow in this one. besides, where else are you gonna see a porn shop right next door to a church supply shop??

  • I think the original version is better, I guess since I grew up with that one

  • Mitch Mitchell is my fucking hero

  • OMG! What the fuck happened to the recording?! It sounds... (gasp) PROFESSIONAL! I like my Alien Lanes version better.. lo-fi for life!!

  • jump/swell/buildup at 1:07 = best part

  • jump/swell/buildup at 1:07 = best part

  • just saw classic line up last night, they still rock so fuckin hard!!!!

  • seems psychedelic

  • I love this song. im only 12 and my dad introduced u guys to me when i was 10 nd i love you guys so much! i listen to u guys everyday and wish i could meet you guys!

  • @mr97okin I'm 12, too, cool

  • @mr97okin Ah that's great..you've got years of listening ahead of you.

  • POST ACID

  • @Tuttyistheshizz yeah this shit is so awesome, its about tripping in my calm quiet midwest. now they're spewing this shit all over tv. its sad

  • GBV, the classic lineup, will out write, out rock, and out class any other band in history or in the future. I should know, I am the one and only Skippy Skywalker and my Art films are the best, beaatches!

  • I like the earlier punkier version on the BT Director's Cut LP better...

  • 0:18 theyre tripping balls

  • I just noticed the Adult Toys store is right next to the Church Supply hahaha

  • 10 people should be stabbed

  • @ezc0re Make that 11 now.

  • @ezc0re ..with the valuable hunting knife!

  • @ezc0re I see what you did there..

  • @ezc0re A very logical conclusion. Glad you are so much better than those ten people.

  • esta debe ser la canción más chévere del mundo

  • fhghghghghghghghgtf

  • boa

  • does anyone else think that his voice is IDENTICAL to Wayne Coyne's? literally identical.

  • @theligbabowski Yeah they're quite similar! Wayne's always out of tune tho :) don't get me wrong, I like the Flaming Lips!

    Also, this is SO 90s

  • @AFirmKickInThePants

Just noticed they both began in '83, that is far too much of a coincidence for me....and they are both 2 of my favorite bands as well, weird how that works.

  • does anyone hear john mellencamp

  • This band is everything I'm about

  • Comment removed

  • 90's slacker rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Today's Adult Entertainment Center and The Church Supply Store in the same shot? Was this video made by a Wright State freshman photography student?

  • damn these electiric sex pants

  • this version is incredible. i have some other version i think. it sounds like they are pounding on trash cans.

  • If you like GBV you should chek out "The Yummy Cookey Oatmills" from walla walla. They have a great song "My Spoon is good for Hardware stores in the afternoon" i think you can find it at "My eyebrows need a trim at walmart dot com"

  • @vavasssc I went on your page and you're a twat

  • Comment removed

  • @breadrollboy "Twat" (LOL) well that settles it then internet tough guy.

  • ill never know if it could have worked out :-(

  • mr. pollard was my 7th and 8th grade basketball coach. the court he uses in his videos I use to play on, lol... funny seeing him so big now!!

  • @theohiostate1 lucky.

  • I just found out about Guided By Voices today...

Where have they been all my life?!

  • @plasmoidi welcome to Bob's Army.

  • ah yes, the church store next to the porn store. gotta love it.

  • I've actually never heard this version, I really dig it

  • Whatever version of GBV, as long as it is GBV!

GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV GBV

  • i am driving round promoting girls that have no name...

  • maybe i've already written this...

but the album version is better.........!!

    it's good enough anyway ;P

  • wtf man, look at the world statistics for this,

  • @09prizefighter09 no other line-up can compete! too bad jim macpherson wasnt the drummer! that wouldve been the tits!

  • God, I miss this band.

  • I want to go to there too

  • they should cover an entire tshirt with that graphic on the bass drum, i would wear it

  • Hooray Guided by voices sucks!!!! Ha Ha Ha!!!!!

  • I only hope to be this cool when I'm middle-aged

  • the best ones ever!!!

  • ha! an adult entertainment center next to a church supply store. in ohio no less

  • Comment removed

  • i'm totally digging this band

  • this version kicks ass! especially when the second guitar kicks in.

  • Like my valuable hunting knife, this song "will not lose it's appeal over years."

  • best thing to come out of dayton,OH since the Deal twins

  • it crowd reference for me as well my friend

both band and show are epic!

  • I agree with anyone who asserts that Alien Lanes is their best album. Though I dig this fine, the album version rocks.

  • this is actually my fave version of this song, although 'Alien Lanes' is my fave Guided By Voices album!

  • I prefer the AlienLane version, but even this one is cool :-)

  • the classic era.

  • at 1:37 -- I used to have that camera when I was a kid!!!! LOL

I prefer the Alien Lanes recording, but this is good too :-)

  • USA Indie rock at its best. They invented the notion. Everything its about is GBV. Check them out kidz.

  • i heard of this band from the IT crowd :D

a grate T.V show and a grate band!

  • yes..it almost have ,ore than five versions..

  • Amazing song, regardless of the many versions of it that exist.

  • jeez does anyone know where to get a good version of this song? the one on itunes sucks

  • i dunno, but i think the version/mix on Alien Lanes is better than this one.

  • cool ill look at it thanks

  • cds? i still buy them.

  • GBV is the best. but you have to be smart to understand them.

  • how so?

  • one of the best bands ive seen live/i saw them on their first uk tour in 95 with the amps supporting them/robert pollard is one of the most creative and prolific and under rated song writers ever//

  • from dayton ohio!

  • Brilliant!!!, but I prefer the one in Alien Lanes

  • Rob looks like my Friends dad :)

  • Rob looks like evryone's friends' dad!

  • @guestinformant but what if you have black friends? haha trick question! hey you know how families are nowadays! and i'm black by the way, so no slamming me everybody....

  • @guestinformant

What's funny about that is just met Rob's son about 30 minutes ago. HIS son plays on the same soccer team as my son. We were talking about music and he said his dad was in Guided by Voices...so I just looked them up, hahaha! And he looks ALOT like him, just with blonde curly hair instead :)

  • @LC1music You have just met the son of one of the best singers in music history, LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i just played an acoustic open mic at this resturaunt and one of the guys there told me id like these guys

    so far so good

    :)

  • Wow, just came to check out what Guided by Voices sounds like after reading that they're one of the Strokes' favorite bands. And they are fantastic.

  • Great song, brings some memories, when there was some Sebadoh, Slint, Bedhead, Pavement, etc. The few good american bands to care of, loved the 90's.

  • Beautiful.

  • one of the top 10 groups of all time...how lucky i was to find them but not many around me in oz know of them

  • Search 'Teenage FBI' for a video recorded live Down Under.

  • yeah...the alien lanes version is essential...this takes away everything that i loved about that 4 track sound...doesnt matter though---gbv is boss

  • The original song is alot better

  • wheres more GBV?

  • I love the transition from Today's Adult Entertainment Center to Dayton Church Supply. Oh, Dayton!

  • I hope you mean this version of this song

  • bite it

  • "...this song sucked so much...I hate myself for clicking on it."

I hope you don't feel all alone. I hate you, too.

  • Thank you for sharing.

  • Really? I know every member of Slint. They would likely punch you in the face for saying that.

  • i would kiss the ground this song walked on if it had feet

plus check out my cover of it on my channel thing

    yay shameless self advertisment!

  • I somehow never saw this video. I can't even count the things I like about it.

I'm also apparently late to the party on one detail: I've never heard "Knife" in this form when was it reproduced this way? Some things I like about the sloppiness of the original, but there are some killer improvements in this version.

  • this is the "Tigerbomb" EP version, which also has an amped-up version of "game of pricks" on it, plus a couple other cool tunes. the thing i like about this "knife" is the fuzzy guitar....an even-better version than the original!

  • I never heard "Tigerbomb" ... I also like the fuzz guitar better ... then again, maybe that's because I wasn't used to it and it sounds "fresh."

  • Dayton's artists work hard. I was Hans then and there in those days.

  • the director is listed as Banks Tarver. that name also has a credit as directing The Afghan Whigs (from Cincinnati ... an hour south of Dayton) video "1965" besides GBV's "Ironman Rally Song" & "I am A Scientist". there is a Banks Tarver listed in IMDB as producing "This American Life" and a bunch of reality shows. i do not know it to be the same person but it seems possible. i'm betting he is Clay Tarver's (Bullet LaVolta, Chavez) brother which would explain the GBV & Whigs connection.

  • I'd never seen the video for this song before. Great stuff. Does anyone know who directed it?

  • I am pretty sure the director directed it!!

  • Yeah you're funny!

  • That wasn't even clever or anything... lol

  • It was the truth. Ask a dumb question...ya get a dumb answer...hahaha

  • dumb question?

    yr literally not making sense.

    he's looking for names.

  • I will repeat his question, as it seems you do not comprehend it. "Does anyone know who directed it?" I replied, "I am pretty sure the director directed it!" I thought that was pretty funny. Maybe you should dig deep and not take things so literally...you know, enjoy life a little bit, before you die. It is simple. A good laugh doesn't hurt either. Just a thought.

  • not a fan of this version either. the drum track is too loud, crisp and high-fi. layed over the low-fi sound of the rest of the track, its really annoying to me. the alien lanes version is perfect to me.

  • This mix blows.

  • 2:23-2:24, is that a morrissey 7" lp he just threw?

  • Totally Dayton punk sound.

  • So I'm sittin with my knife

    thinking about life

    I'll never have a wife

sometimes I just wanna fly a kite

It would suck to lose my sight

    I worry about gettin old

    I know if I were more bold I wouldn't

    I should'nt though

    but I don't know how

    Life is about the wows

  • No. This song is about a totally bitchin hunting knife of his.

  • I think its about going out looking for mystery/adventure

  • that sounded wrong

  • lo maximo el tio bob

  • to me, this song talks about the emptiness of things and the essence of why we hold on to them even when we know it won't last. "and yeah that's my move"

  • Best band ever. Their best output were the mid- nineties seven inches

  • hello guided by voices fans dont know any of you from adam but i do know your good people

  • where could i get an mp3 of this version?

  • dunno if it's the same but there is a "rocked up" version on the bee thousand reissue
