It IS God and Satan. Check Wikipedia, there's even a translated SFC rom hack out there. The religious subtext was removed from the US version because Americans don't know how to handle a little religious fiction without getting ridiculously mad.

The main differences between the Japan and US versions is the balance between the action stages and simulation stages.

In the Japan version the action stages are a bit harder, with more enemies and stage harzards. The action stage spells also consume more HP, but are better balanced than in the US version.

However sim stages are easier in the japan version. MP is slightly trickier to manage, but the enemies are weaker and the player levels up MUCH faster.

Many sprites were changed too.

I've heard in the Japanese version the bosses are way harder so I am guessing he's tougher there.

The bloodpool boss is really hard until you learn his jumping pattern, then he's just a pushover whose really time consuming because you can only hit him him like once for every 6 jumps he does.

tanzra is easy its just i only have like 1 life left when i fight him becuz u gota fight all the other bosses and no health regen at all

but tanzra dies in only a few hits

A difference I just noticed: in the U.S. version, you don't score 1000 points for each remaining life after you beat Tanzra/Satan.

I wonder why a game like this even had a score counter, anyway. It wasn't very important, and makes no difference in the RPG section. And since it only holds five digits, it maxes out at 99,990 when you play the "Professional!" mode.

I couldn't tell you as it's been too long, but if I had to guess, it's likely that the sword power-up only affects the range of your attack in the US version. Either way, kinda interesting, since I didn't catch that when I compared the two.
