I remember playing this with my dad as a rental. We blasted through it in twelve hours. He played the civilization, I played the fight levels. I remember getting to the last boss and beating the head and, all of a sudden, his power bar going to the end of the screen! I got him with one HP left...
It IS God and Satan. Check Wikipedia, there's even a translated SFC rom hack out there. The religious subtext was removed from the US version because Americans don't know how to handle a little religious fiction without getting ridiculously mad.
@Sigma5656 Dude - have you even seen the ActRaiser official soundtrack? The final boss track is named 'Satan.' The Japanese version of the game calls the main hero God, and the main enemy Satan. Learn to read Kanji, do your research guy.
the greatest game of all time, often overlooked, as many titles from the SNES era are also memorable; to this day - it still makes an impact for its music and gameplay
The main differences between the Japan and US versions is the balance between the action stages and simulation stages.
In the Japan version the action stages are a bit harder, with more enemies and stage harzards. The action stage spells also consume more HP, but are better balanced than in the US version.
However sim stages are easier in the japan version. MP is slightly trickier to manage, but the enemies are weaker and the player levels up MUCH faster.
They need to port this to the DS!!! More levels, Multi-player, Mini Games, etc...Hmmm? I'll write to Square Enix, if they don't listen...I'll storm into their office if I have too grabbing legs...PLEASE!!!!.
I guess they're interested in Christian Mythology over there in japan, but i don't think any over there are christian, if so very very little, most likely, they are of half european heritage. But no one fully japanese.
Gotta love this game for having balls back in the day. Frankly there's not much offensive about it, but some people don't like their religious beliefs and whatnot being associated with fiction.
Meh, its all a bit silly really but to each his own ^__^
Try doing this with half as big a health meter and no ranged sword attack :P
It certainly is centered around christian mythology, and yes, you are indeed showing overt generalization. There are plenty of japanese who are christian. European missionaries has been operating there since the 16th century and there are jewish and christian communities here and there.
Yeah, you are right of course. I also found it weird that a japanese game was all that spinned up with christianity. Were all the programmers christian, or what?
It's no different then every other character in an American cartoon being a 'ninja master' or taking other inspiration from Eastern culture. Is it really that shocking to you? It's interesting to get inspiration from something that's foreign, simple as that.
I've heard in the Japanese version the bosses are way harder so I am guessing he's tougher there.
The bloodpool boss is really hard until you learn his jumping pattern, then he's just a pushover whose really time consuming because you can only hit him him like once for every 6 jumps he does.
i have the game but i cant play it. :( i loved it. my frist game i played i think . i still have it. like 51 years now// wow / can i ues some ones game weirs to play .
A difference I just noticed: in the U.S. version, you don't score 1000 points for each remaining life after you beat Tanzra/Satan.
I wonder why a game like this even had a score counter, anyway. It wasn't very important, and makes no difference in the RPG section. And since it only holds five digits, it maxes out at 99,990 when you play the "Professional!" mode.
I amend myself: I just found out that the score directly affects the maximum population of each land. I can't believe that after 17 years, I did not know that...
Sorry I meant is doing so much damage unique to the US version, presuming that's the version you are playing. I have the EU version and it's never happened. Weird! The boss takes so much longer..
I couldn't tell you as it's been too long, but if I had to guess, it's likely that the sword power-up only affects the range of your attack in the US version. Either way, kinda interesting, since I didn't catch that when I compared the two.
For some reason I can't get past a certain part. I am not going to try and beat this game again, being I lost my file and I was very far into it. But All of the villages were happy and stuff and I couldn't battle anything, it was wierd.
I played this a couple months ago on Virtual Console, and it took me maybe 5-10 consecutive tries to beat it, I don't quite remember, but the satisfaction you get after beating it is so great.

What the hell is satan doing in a japanese game?
They don't believe in satan over there. Souls and stuff, yes, but not satan, hell, or any kind of dogmatic locations or characters.
This game must be centered around christian mythology.

Bloodpool act fucking 1

i think hes easier than the first boss you fight in the game

Yes its true
I downloaded actraiser on my pc yesterday and beat it in only a day
took awhile to get used to using my keyboard but
tanzra is easy its just i only have like 1 life left when i fight him becuz u gota fight all the other bosses and no health regen at all
but tanzra dies in only a few hits
about 10-15 not that hard
:/ but its still my fav snes game right next to the donkey kong games and all the mario games.

plus the difficulty is much harder.

And camel this game is definitely an allegory about the battle between God and Satan.

Most people also forget that if you boil down the story in most games it becomes god vs satan battle just in different forms.
Soul blazer: warrior sent down by heaven to battle the lord of evil.
and there are plenty more of theese similarities.
