  • David., T%hat is not a binding on the neck, and on the fingerboard. The fingerboard is actually thicker than the binding on it. That is what looks like a strip of dark binding on the neck UNDER the light binding on the fingerboard.

  • This guy aint got shit on PHIL X!

  • I like this guitar more for lead rather than rhythm, not keen on it for rhythm at all, we have one at a friends house in his collection, it is just sitting in a case, and comes out every few months for a few days, just to stop it from deterioration, as I had a 1978 tele in the box for 20 years, and the frets need some work done on them, the wood had expanded ect, if U are collecting guitars, U need to get them out to play over the years, or they will end up in trouble.

  • love the 4001/4003 bass body

  • What type of Frets?

  • mmmmmm i know a certain japanese company who make a clone that is realy realy similar including seymore duncan ric pups, however i wont say their name for the reason that ric are worse than gibson for suing. all i can say is that certain T company make it and believe me its great

  • wtf title, compare the guitar to the amp?

  • schecter makes a pretty similar looking guitar called the stargazer I think

  • Haha! 3:08!

  • I really wish they still made these :(

  • This slanted business is wonky....

  • ugh, that thing is just gorgeous. im so full of envy right now.

  • i want that lol

  • very cool stuff

  • Wow, that thing sounds BIG!

  • U look like Kipkay

  • I personally like the bass better. :D

  • hey retard. take the backwards hat off, you look like a fucking 12 year old little douche. fuck i dont like you because of that hat alone, and because of that, i'm not watching your videos or listening to you cause because of that, you suck at life, and dick.

  • @GotThe89Vision obvious troll is obvious

  • @GotThe89Vision man up troll, get out ur mums basement

  • blech...better as a bass.

  • The coating on the fretboard is lacquer

  • Great review of a cool and quirky guitar.

  • You seem like a really nice guy but you talk way too much on your videos. . just play the gear and we can figure out the details if we are interested. Thanks!

  • These guitars sound awesome, but not everybody is accostumed to this sound

  • what sort of cash are these nowadays ?

  • the humbuckers are too much for the guitar i think... would sound better with other pickups or a jangle-box or (sublte) treble booster in front clean.

  • this guitar is 9 pounds... and its considered heavy but arent hofner basses considered really light? and they weight about 9 to 10 pounds

  • @leonpal14 i got a hofner guitar "hofner shorty" i will show you a pick let me add you

  • @leonpal14 I have a hofner and a rick. hofner weighs about 4.0 pounds.....rick is 10

  • Chris squire - the rick man

  • Rickenbacker's are awesome

  • fuck youu

  • where can i get that guitar?

  • @deftonespg The 480 models where in production from 1973-1981 (or was it 1984? I really don't remember). Anyways the 481 model was in production at roughly the same time. Rickenbacker has been asked a million times to put them back in production, but they wont.

  • it looks better as a bass, the guitar doesnt look as cool

  • this guitar reminds me of Kasabian all the time

  • is that a single coil-humbucker switch?

  • Thats prety cool, i have a 1973 vintage epiphone flying v.

  • Paul McCartney used the bass too

  • ANYONE GOT A 480 481 FOR SALE????!!!!!

    dselby_mail@yahoo.com

  • obviously the slanted frets work. were literally watching them right now. please stop disscussing whether or not its possible

  • i think the slented frets are supposed to be more "true " to the actual harmonic division fo the string into the half steps...if it makes sense.

  • does anyone sell a 480 or 481?

  • All I have to say about this guitar is "MASTERPIECE"!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at the friggen gorgeous head on that somebe-otch! WOW! I would love that guitar in my collection. How much Rockongoodpeople will you sell that to me for???? Lets talk business today without any delay!

  • so the slants are like scallops

  • that . looks. fucking. awsome

  • i sort of think Rickenbacker guitars suck...however the basses are the greatest.

  • i love how you can here the in phase/ out of phase of the those buckers

  • Wouldn't the slanted frets mess up intonation? Might make it slightly easier to play, but this guitar is going to be really out of tune higher up on the neck. This isn't a good guitar for lead playing.

  • RickenbaCKER, Not barker

  • this guy does talk a lot, but i like him, and he's a very good player/teacher

  • I don't know is that body/style of Rick 4001, because looking at the head, that hook/curve in top of the neck is curving up. I got Rick 4003 bass and it curves up. And what I've seen 4001-models, there that "hook" is curving down.

  • It's pronounced Ricken-BACK-er, not Ricken-BOCK-er. Thank you.

  • @shamustwin lol i commented that too.

  • @kipreitz it is a review, not a demo. and i've seen worse on youtube, really.

  • It's all made of maple, both the body and the neck. Rosewood for the fretboard.

  • this is sergio pizzorno set uo

  • Comment removed

  • I WANT ONE! They cost like 3000 pounds! hate it!

  • i had one of these and it was very lead playable, the ad said the slanted frets made you play "33"% faster. i miss it sooo bad

  • why did rickenbacker discontinue this guitar, it is one of my all time favourite guitars.

  • why mention geddy lee and not cliff burton what a deuce

  • @PLUMPER101 or why not Chris Squire!? or maybe Paul McCartney? or Geezer Butler??! or Lemmy?!

or one of the hundreds of other bassists who play rick basses (most of whom are 1000X better than cliff) ?

  • @deadheadman66 i wouldnt compare any of them besides lemmy to cliff maybe gene simmons cliff was way before his time who else plays like that?

  • @PLUMPER101 you're kidding right?

you're obviously into heavier music, so you should at least respect Geezer Butler (of black sabbath in case you didn't know.)

all of those players were groundbreakers. i hear nothing special in cliff's playing. if we are talking straight up bass players...flea was out doing stuff that blows cliff's playing out of the water around the same time.

  • @deadheadman66 Everybody knows flea kicks ass though they came out at the same time as MetallicA flea's got that funky style kinda like Les Claypool and ill never be the biggest butler fan i think its fucked up they basically threw ozzy in the trash my favorite sabbath member will always be tony iommi

  • The wood is maple for the body and neck. Fretboard is rosewood.

  • Do the slanted frets make it easier to play?

I've never heard of such a thing, very intriguing.

  • fingerboard has been in the sun 4 at least 2 weeks... ha ha--- bolt on??

  • I want that guitar too because my idol has that too!! :D:D Sergio Pizzorno!! <33

  • i've wanted a 481 fireglo for ages now but when a good one turns up they are about 2-3 grand! (uk sterling) if i was a decent player i could justify paying that much but i'm not so i got a 480 for less than half the price and i love it! the 480 is not an easy guitar to get along with and my telecaster almost plays itself next to this but i get so much more pleasure fighting my 480 and it looks the mutts!

  • wot a twat

  • Sounds like high pressure fecal matter hitting porcelin. No offense to any Rickenbacker owners.

  • that guitars a gem =)

  • Sergio Pizzorno has that guitar

  • @mmelo2334 segio pizza

  • @mmelo2334 *Serge

  • @timbotones24794 His name is Sergio, his nickname is Serge...

  • Damn, i hate people playing the G chord in guitar reviews!

  • I want one !

  • where can i buy that guitar ive looked everywhere and i cant find one and i reli reli wnat 1 can anyone help????

  • You can help yourself by improving your spelling.

  • schecter stargazer

  • You aren't going to find one, they've been out of production for a long long long time.

  • rickenbacker dont sell them no more only way is ebay

there was 1 on a few months ago really bad condition and it went for £2000

good condition goes from £5000 to £10,000

  • I love my 1974 480 :)

  • i've wanted one of these for so long just off looks alone and i finally tracked one down to finally play and it was so disappointing.

  • I owned one of these as well as a 480. Yes, they aren't very playable. The fingerboards are just too flat and too narrow. Ric only makes guitars that are good for strumming, not for rock or blues soloing. I don't understand at all, all they had to do was ask lead guitarists what they liked. They never bothtered. Morons. The latest solids are good. . . but don't have the cool looks. Pointless. Morons.

  • @ironbuttermilk How are Rics not usable for soloing? It takes some time getting used to them, but guys like John Fogerty of Creedence use them a LOT for lead guitar!

  • @ccrholland "Guys like?"

Name five great soloists who use a Ric 6 string.

Btw, John's a great player, but he used the Ric because he was into 3/4 guitars with light string for extra easy bendability. . and you can hear him overbending quite a bit.

  • @ironbuttermilk Okay... I can't name lots of lead players who played Ricks.

By the way, Fogerty uses a full scale Rickenbacker these days and he still rocks some solos!

  • @ccrholland Yes, I think that's cool of John. If only he'd use the Kustoms. I'm sentimental I guess. I've often thought of having a Ric copy made with a better feeling neck, because I love the look. The reason soloists don't tend to use Rics is because they just don't feel that comfy, same with Mosrites . . .which also look cool as hell. You Can use a Ric, better Gibsons are So much easier to play, and they sustain alot more. John put a humbucker on his old Ric you know.

  • @ironbuttermilk You know, it's all a matter of preference. We could be arguing like this for weeks but nobody's got it 'right', you know?

And yeah, I like John's old Kustom amp a lot more than his current rig. By the way, his full-scale Rick has the stock pickups! He once said he regretted the PAF, hahaha

  • The dude from Kasabian plays something similar to that.

  • its the same guitar as what he plays

  • I hate to say it but that thing sounds terrible lol.absolutely horrible.

  • that is one beautiful guitar!!

  • i think god blessed the bass players with a nice peice of rickenbacker bass. i dont like it as guitar

  • All true except the god part.

  • yeah.. i didnt meant it litilary (my english sucks)

  • lol there's people whose first language is English and they're worse.

  • @henkiewessel the twelve strings awesome, but yeah, this isn't great

  • I had both the 481 and the 480, and they were both crap. Well made, but badly designed. The necks have the typical Ric lack of headstock angle, which kills the sustain and playability for lead playing. The humbuckers don't help, or sound good. I switched mine to John Kay models, didn't help much. The fuingerboards are too flat and narrow, totally bad for soloing, slanted frets don't help. Ric never made a good lead guitar 'til the 90's, but they looked lame. Shame, 'cause they were good.

  • @ironbuttermilk yes, those Fenders with their unangled headstocks completely ruin sustain and playability, who would ever use one for lead playing?

  • @doguecreek What! Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Are you serious?

  • sarcasm, bubba, sarcasm. That's my point exactly, imagine someone claiming that a guitar sucks for lead because it lacks an angled headstock. But that's what ironbuttermilk claims.

  • I dont think it sounds good, at all.

  • Had one of these on lay-a-way in Dallas in the 80s, store closed, lost $ & Ric.

  • In 1978 I was about 12 years old and our local music store had a used one and I wanted it so bad but my father wouldn't buy it for me, cant blame him , I didnt even play guitar at the time but thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I have been looking for one ever since and have never even seen one until this video. My friends said I was nuts , they said Rickenbacker didn't make a guitar with the same shape as the basses.

  • I want one of these but without the slanted frets

plus i bet they cost a fortune now

  • i didnt even know this model existed until i saw the guy from kasabian playing one/i always thought the 4001 bass was the best looking instrument ever made and wondered why there wasnt a guitar version/nom i know there is/i want one!!!

  • I have one for sale ...send email for pics!

  • id love it but unless you only want £300 for it or swap it for a jazzmaster ill have to pass on it this time!

  • how much you selling for?

  • how much??

  • im after one of these, so if anybody has any info on price and dealers or sellers it would appreciated!

  • Nice work. keep it up. mean time come for social media marketing for esteembpo**com GN

  • i don't really know much about guitars atm but would LOVE to own something as unique looking as this; would certainly make people pay attention.

Would have been nice to hear it in OD or with a few different effects though to see how diverse it could be.

  • it's the 4001/4003 of guitar

  • It's made of maple, isn't it?

    Oh well.

  • i swear the only progression this guy ever plays is1-4-1-4-1-4-5-4-1-4-1 then he'll throw in some sort of beginer pentatonic lick. then talk for the rest of the video

    snooooooooz fest

  • agreed

  • He's a nice guy ...what's everyone talking about ?

He loves guitars and that shows...nothing wrong with that....I just bought one of these guitars...can't wait to get it !

  • Would you happen to be the person who bought a black 1976 model on ebay recently?

  • Hi, No that's not me...

  • I bought a black 1975 481 on eBay the other day.

  • Was jk----65 the seller? (I've been watching eBay)

  • Yes. R U 5***P?

  • No, I didn't bid. I'm just watching to see how they end right now. I will buy a 480 model some time this year but not right now. By the way, If you don't mind, When you get your 481 could you tell me how it plays or (If you have the time) Post a video of you playing it?

  • I'm having the guitar refinished and hardware redone. I will post something when I get it back. Won't be for a while though.

  • OK then, I look forward to it! Guitars are for playing anyway, Not collecting. I sent you a friend request and subscribed.

  • Shit that is amaising i love it! I have two rick guitars right now ones a lefty the other one was converted. if you want to check them out go to my channel!

  • beautiful guitar

  • lovely guitar but the guys a twat!

  • cool guitar,

but that guy pisses me of

i want a rickenbacker 340 12 string. george harrison had one and i've wanted one for a long time.

  • Every time I watch a video with this guy in it I always feel that he has not the slightest idea of what the hell he's talking about.

  • It's beautiful as heck!

  • good comeback

  • Oh just play the fucking thing....

  • first time i see this 481 model ,surprising it's a 4001 bass body! and strange slanted frets! anyway the tone is a cool rickenbacker one.

  • I used to have this model when I was 16 or 17 (1976?). I wish I still had it. :(

  • u could still get a copy from the store but it will take a really long time to get...

  • This is one the most lethargic reviews of a guitar I've ever seen.

  • I wonder if the slanted frets made intonation difficult?

  • No, intonation isn't affected at all. The nut and bridge are also angled to the same degree as the frets.

  • for a guitar that was produced for 9 years, they sure are hard as hell to find now...

  • epiphone viola

  • Great guitar, but some overdrive sounds would be nice.

  • i think it's made of solid maple, which is a very heavy wood. my '78 4001 bass is also very heavy and made of maple.

  • the coolest bass ever made ;)

  • at first i thought the pickups were slanted but its the frets! thats really cool, awesome rare guitar!

  • Have you heard a "Texas Heat" in the DRRI yet?

  • Damn this is one great guitar!

  • If willy wonka played a guitar he would play a Rickenbacker

  • that guitar its GREAT GUITAR! i got to play on one for a show and its AMAZING!

  • I saw this guitar in Croatia 1994. Yes, remind me on my 4001 bass. Beautiful!

  • 5:52... THAT is what that guitar was made for

  • agree'd

  • Does it matter what its made for? does it matter what pickup he uses? does it matter what guitar he uses for what style, does it matter if he uses distortion on a rickenbacker or uses reverb on an ovation, does it matter at all, what he wants to do with his guitars what he thinks sounds cool

  • calm down there seabiscuit... I was complimenting what he was playing. don't get your panties in a bunch.

  • i think its used by one of the guitarists in Kasabian

  • Correct

  • 'its a bass, no its a guitar'! ha

i'll have some of what you were smoking.

  • God......what I wouldn't do for that baby.

  • Got my own Rickenbacker 480 recently.

Could never been more pleased with it!

  • aaarh i used to dream about the 480 and this.. one day i will either have one or make my own!!

  • es hermosa, pero seguramente sale una fortuna

  • If Willy Wonka played guitar he would play that Rickenbacker

  • They are very very very hard to get a hand on

  • Epoxy finish on the fretboard i guess?

  • i prefer the bass shape over the guitar shape, but thats jus me haha

  • yea i do to i really dont like the guitar shape its ok but i prefer the bass shape wayyy more

  • Sergio Pizzorno

  • The fretbaord is so shiny! 0.0

  • wow the shape is really cool...
