  • there are 3 idiots on this earth , who dislike this song...

  • Northside Dub!

  • The ABSOLUTE BEST version that would make P. C. proud. Sitiing here @ 3:37 a.m. I always come back to this song. Best version, no doubt!

  • @GrafBrotula95 The tune *is* "Dawning of the Day" but the poem is On Raglan Road sung to that tune.

  • RIP Lukey - you are loved

  • This Is by far the best version I have ever heard

  • Nobody could sing it like Luke and no one could play it like another Dubliner Mick O Brien the legend uillean piper Go to YouTube - Stormy Sunset

  • jafros ha love it

  • leaving cert 2010, this got me to college :)

  • vengence is mine

  • luke kelly made jafros famous

  • the dubliners made men with beards stylish

  • This is the only version of this song that should exist.

  • This poem is on the patrick kavanagh course, one day when i was bored in english class, i came across this in the book and learned it, the only productive thing ive ever done in the english course, a beautiful poem, and thanks to luke kelly, a beautiful song.

  • @Brenn2k9 no shit... same here dude

  • My mother in law (gawd rest her) told me she used to see the woman this poem was written about back in the day. The woman was very young an beautiful and married to a doctor I think. According to her and another old boy I worked with who hailed from Monaghan, Kavanagh was a ill-mannered piss-head who was fixated on that young woman and who should have known better. Still, he wrote imho the most beautiful love poem in the history of blah blah.......... There ya go.

  • beautiful song - beautiful voice.

  • i was walking in south Dublin the other day and accidentally walked pass Raglan Road. I was pretty surprised

  • @etre3 that happened me before, so i know what your talking about

  • if u think u can sing try this one ,then listen to luke yo,ll see what i mean

  • rip paddy k and luke kelly.... :) i live 20 mins from patrick kavanagh's childhood house in monaghan and shancoduff the famous fields from the poem !!

  • Wow..... What a voice! His voice will always stun me........

  • Absolutely heart wrenching. A major achievement of Irish culture.

  • Join me on my crusade to stop this tyrant trading a once owned irish product in Ireland, thats now sold out to the british and it's economy while the irish workers who made it famous Q on the dole. Jacobs biscuits was once a profit making company that employed hundreds of Irish folk, that is until an Irish man got greedy and shut it down sorce-ing the work out to foreign land.

  • would it be alright if we could all say christ, that was a good song sung well;we dont have to argue over a cough or a sigh surely;sometimes a poem has to be clipped to allow a song, well ,i think so

  • wat a legend of a man

  • Luke kelly is a legend who lives forever in his music.

  • @TheSeanieboy he didnt write that

  • this song just seems to work for the movie In Bruges and i have to say i enjoy this song alot now

  • Several years ago when I first heard this song on a Chieftains album, I was searching my mind for where I heard this before...having not previously heard a recording. I finally deferred to my Mother and asked if Daddy had ever sung "Raglan Road." At 80+ years old, my Mother replied "your Father stood in the kitchen doorway and sang this after your sister's wedding (1971). Each time I listen to this song, it gives me chills, smiles and fond memories of my Dad even to this day.

  • @auditor05 What a lovely memory for you.

  • @auditor05 I love that! true irish Family spirit...my father would also stand in the doorway at such events and sing...I thought he was great!

  • @64berber i didnt really see why they put it in to be honest...great song tho

  • corrections-

On Raglan Road on an autumn's day I saw her first and a new,

I saw the danger and I passed along the enchanted way.

And word and tint, without stint, I gave her poems to say.

That I had loved, not as I should, a creature made of clay.

  • @casperld The corrections you gave are very useful but, after studying the poem, the first is actually "On Raglan Road on an autumn's day I saw her first and knew," not "On Raglan Road on an autumn's day I saw her first and a new" as you said. Don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, besides it did sound that way =]

  • @steaktacular11

Yep you are right, the actual poem as it was written is the way it is in the description.

I guess I should correct my correction :)

The way I learned it was the way Luke sings it.

  • Beautiful....luke says it best, enough said! Raglan Road.

  • r.i.p. ken

  • I love this song / poem. Thanks for posting the words so i can sing along!

  • I can hear Ken splashing at 4:17.

  • RIP luke a great man of peace and unity and the world loved and respected him

  • amazing voice !!! <3

  • So good I can't descibe it. It reminds me of the birth of my daughter - it was the CD that was playing as I rushed to The Coombe after getting that long awaited telephone call.

    RIP Luke.

  • An amazing voice I love this song

  • RIP Patrick Kavanagh.

Someday, I might come back. If you want to honor me with letting me share to you

poetry written in the streets and pubs of Ireland..

  • luke kelly=true dubliner, he knew the irish score

  • I have to say, the use of this song in "In Bruges" is probably the best use of a song I have ever seen in a movie. Just perfect.

  • @FogleBeatz

    Bruges? It's a shithole!

"Maybe that is Hell, an eternity spent in fucking Bruges"

  • Your spirit will sing forever, Lukey

  • It's all about the memories

the love and loss of a street

and the memories that it brings along

    People coming and going

    With their sadness and rush

    the street will alwas remember

the souls that once wandered there...

  • "And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf" English isnt even our language and look how simple we made it.

  • Luke Kelly does Justice to this beautiful poem.

I've been on Raglan Road, and this may seem wanky, but you can hear the words in your head.

  • @yafudye

i've walked that street. I heard the words too. From Baggot Street to Ballsbridge, there is a lovely silnce ther.

  • @yafudye and Tphilpott,

I agree, it's beautiful around there, very quiet and tranquil

  • Van Morrison's version is rings all the bells, whistles, and heart strings. It is nowhere to be found on Youtube...I wonder why?

  • Legend Luke Kelly!Patrick Kavanagh,is perhaps the person who makes me most proud of my country.Such a drunk ,and yet a man of wisdom.Read carefully this poem and focus on the Angels!Genius.R.I.P.

  • Where in Ireland are you from mate?

I spent 3 years in Belfast, learning the craft of writing in a different language.

I spent 3 months in Dundalk, working, and finishing a Belfast story. Sitting right on Kavanaghs seat at Phoenix Pub in the Middle of Dundalk.

They have now 3 poems of mine hanging up on the wall now, if they did as they promissed...

My last day in Dundalk, they gave me free drinks & a Guinness pint glass. You Irish always show respect for Writers. I love Ireland for it...

  • im glad you show such an interest in irish writing. and we were glad to have you !! its a shame there arent more like you !

  • I still like Van Morisson's version with The Chieftains best =) Despite this amazing one, and Glen Hansard's too... Noone can quite sing it like Van!

  • This is such a beautiful poem. The poem stands by itself. but at least Luke Kelly does it justice in the form of song.

  • irish music is great ,this came on the radio when i was having a pint of guinness the other day...really suited the moment

  • this song made in bruges one of my favorite movies

  • Amen.

  • yes! quality movie and song!

  • love it!haha

  • your an inanimate fucking object!lol

  • Fantastic upload well done and thank you very much..

  • ....SPLATT!!!

  • LOL I hear that too in my head at the end.

  • The punctuation but more importantly the lyrics in your description are wrong. you even have 2 words wrong in the very first line!!

  • if you were actually bothered about this song or more importantly the poem, you would know that the words he/she has in the description are those of the poem.

  • Thank you

  • @mickton619 The printed version is what Patrick Kavanaugh wrote when Luke Kelly was only 5 years old. It's Luke Kelly who chose to sing different lyrics.

  • @mickton619 The lyrics given are the words of Kavanagh's original poem. Kelly changed them for the song

  • @mickton619 The description contains the poem "On Raglan Road" by Patrick Kavanagh, the song is "Raglan Road" by Luke Kelly which contains the lyrics edited by Luke Kelly so it would rhyme.

  • @ConnorMcCarra ummmm i dont think so its exactly the same

  • @mickton619 the lyrics wrote down are of the original poem and the song has a few words changed

  • Lovely, but I prefer John Mc Cormacks dawning of the day.

  • queen of hearts, still making tarts! brillant

  • Im doing an essay on Patrick Kavanagh and ive to say what poems id put in a book called the essential Kavanagh im putting this in it

  • of all the versions I've heard, I think I like this one the most.

  • i went on a school trip to PK's house and grave, was really cool yous should check it out

  • Ur info is incorrect. Kavanagh joined the inniskeen pipers band band when he was a teenager, one song he learned the vocaless song 'the dawning of the day' to which the band asked him to write a poem to go with it, and so he ended up writing them poem. Luke was the one who put the poem in a lyrical style

  • what a song

  • Musique du film : Bon Baiser de Bruges/ In Bruges.

    Magnifique chanson et film.

  • the amount of people who get the meaning of this of the english leaving cert...i heard this years ago and didnt think anything of it but after doing it in 5th year... i really like it

  • You just abused one of the most beautiful songs to rant about other people and brag about one of your own skills.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

  • Oh, how I love, love, love this song. If I could time travel - I'd be at a Dubliners concert.

  • it was a sad day for the world when luke kelly died !

  • This song is so amazing. It truely is an unforgettable song from an unforgetable artists. This song really was well suited for the scene in "In Bruges" :)

  • I fucking love Irish Music.

    The Dubliners

    Planxty

    Bothy Band

    Silly Wizard

    All SO good

  • Oh, tha gaol agam fhèin air ceòl dualchas Èirinn

  • I have no idea what that means though quite stupidly I put Silly Wizard in that list, who are quite categorically Scottish, not Irish :D My bad

  • Wow - good list.

  • Comment removed

  • by the way you put the lyrics to sinead o conors version of the song on this one

  • Love this tune..When this comes on in In Bruges i ALWAYS cry...I usually hate Irish music but this one is heart warming..well it either makes u cry or smile..Proud 2 b an irish lady ;)

  • I'm not irish i'm english does that mean i'm not allowed to appreciate this song? I know lots of proud scots who dont at all link themselves to the irish. You americans gota remember it was the british/irish who made your country what it is today. I met some wonderful americans on my travels but some of you really are letting the side down with silly posts on here.

  • Don't forget the influence from German and Dutch immigrants, along with French influences due to the Louisiana purchase. Influences from African cultures can't be ignored, nor can influences from The Spanish in the west. It's a melting pot, as they say.

  • After all this swearing and stuff that has been going on over this video (I have been fighting for Ireland), we should all just enjoy this beautiful song.

  • Here Here! I'm American with a good bit of Scottish but I think we can all agree that this song is pure beauty! Luke at his finest! Any one who disagrees: pog mo thoin.

  • what a song/poem!!

    proud to be irish:)

  • "Plastic Paddies" such an offensive saying. I say, anyone with Irish ancenstry is as Irish as Luke Kelly, except if you pretend you have Irish ancestry . . . then your just a cunt.

  • Haha yeah man, here here! :)

  • William Arthur Theodore Duggan sang that october 1995... Magic...

  • This is a great poem/song. I love it.

  • thanks for this post.

This is the reason why Luke is so important

  • i love this song!! i can play it on the tinwhistle. slánta!!!

  • Dubran many things are political but hope you haven't become that way :-) Cheers, folk!

  • I hope you're having a good craic up there Luke!

  • A beautiful poem. A great rendition. A wonderful singer. Thanks for posting and the extensive notes. I appreciate it.

  • It was once said that luke had a voice as good as pavorotti

  • pavorotti had a voice as good as Lukes
