Actually, the person who filmed this commented on his original upload. He said the person in the car did escape out of the car through a window and reach a stairwell at the far end of the building. He says he assumes that they were able to survive then. However, he was yelling 逃げろ！ (Quick run!) to a pedestrian who was also caught up in the wave below him. He said he searched for that guy later but was unable to find him. He said he can only hope he was able to survive somehow.

If that car had stayed upright, I'd have given them a shot at surviving, but seeing the car tumble and roll in the water like that drastically reduces their chances. Water would pour in and windows would probably break, dooming those inside.

This looks like a bay/harbor where the waves themselves never really go in, yet the ocean itself rises dozens of feet and simply pours over the sea walls. It's like a tide gone insane. No amount of break wall will help in these situations. Frightening.

It is next to impossible to open the door or break the window underwater.You MUST roll down the window, get as close to the ceiling as possible and then allow the water to fill the car. Once the inside is full, it will equalize the pressure on both sides and you will be able to open the door. The hardest part of this is obviously staying calm while the car fills with water, but it is imperative for survival.
My legitimacy was not the point in my message. However I was merely speaking aloud my thoughts where are that I do indeed see death on a regular basis. I never become hard, it never becomes easy for me. Every day I am reminded I too will die, just like every person on youtube will. Watching the footage of this tragic event I think that the cold winter day made survival an even more difficult possibility. The frigid temperature of the water and air made hypothermia almost inevitable even if someone found something to grab onto or managed to get out of the water.
I am a physician, as such I deal with death every day. Never, ever, do I nor should I get numb to it. Instances such as the one captured in this video shake me to my emotional core for there was nothing I nor anyone could to to help them . This video, as tragic as it is is the last testament of these peoples lives. It should be revered and respected in due form. I hope what ever God they believed in received them as lovingly as I expect my God to do when it is my time to die.

A lot of these places there weren't a lot of options to get from where you were to higher ground. @Recon680 Most of the people who died were elderly, it takes them longer to get to their cars.. and they have slower reaction time and can easily get panicked. A lot of these places there weren't a lot of options to get from where you were to higher ground. While it is natural selection in that regard, I respectfully disagree that it is natural suggestion in the way you suggest. Just going by what I have read.. many healthy people died whoe didn't have time, or trying to save or check on others

@TheBighairyfart What if the families of the people in the car are unsure of what happened to them? They then see this video and are relived to know of their fate even if it is horrifying.
You also act like this person was filming specifically to show these people die and being unsensitive. He seemed to be filming a horrifying and unimaginable event that needs to be documented to understand what/how/when it happened, not just the car.
If no one is filmed dieing, no one will know.

If I didn;t know the person or the place, then it would be a false leap in empathy(even possibly makebelieve) to mourn something like that. If you mourned every terrible event, you would have very little time to do anything constructive.

I can watch, for example, a person die of cancer in a hospital bed with his/hers mother by there side and feel saddened by the event right? Thats not false empathy thats true sadness i can relate to my life experiences.
This is likely just an opinion difference, but by no means should videos of people suffering/dieing not be shown or commented on.

You don't give a fuck for those people, you didn't know them. You didn't even see them. They were stupid enough to be right next to the harbour during a tsunami warning.
