FYI, this is pure talent with ray parker and the crusaders. RAY PARKER JR AND RAYDIO, he recorded their original songs when he had RAYDIO as his band from his OWN studio! Putting RAY PARKER JR AND JOE SAMPLE and the crusaders is plain AWESOME, geniuses!
Yes, that's Ray Parker, Jr. He did have a "pop" solo career - but before that, he was a well-respected studio musician. You see who he's playing with on this clip; Joe Sample, Steve Gadd, Larry Carlton, & Randy Crawford.
@fnkdrmmr ...I see you are a fellow album credit reader. And, yep, Ray's name was all over LOTS of albums in the early-to-mid 70s. He was legend even before he went out on his own. It's just too damn bad that most people only know him as "the guy who did 'Ghostbusters.'"
Ray Parker Jr is one of the most underrated guitarist ever. This dude was actually one of Barry Whites guitarist with the Love Unlimited Orchestra at one time. a studio musician before doing his own thing
I've been listening to all of my Joe Sample CD's on this week after his birthday (Feb.1), great to see he and Wilton Felder back on tour together, Ray Parker, never knew he had these kind of jazz chops, that was great, but I miss the original Crusaders. Whatever happened to "Stix" Hooper?
Last version of The Crusaders I saw was in Memphis in 03, it was Felder, Henderson, & Bobby Lyle on piano, with Special Guest Vocalist, Vanessa Rubin, they were terrific.
Tthose cats are getting old (as I am too) but they still know how to groove, almost Stuff quality's in this line-up. Ray Parker Jr surprised me, and Gadd is the Master of the groove as always. Sample, cool as ever and the Crusaders are just cruisin´, but we are talking Queen Mary stateroom style. Anyone know if the whole concert is available?? Thx for posting.
Gadd!! I know this is really lame, but I just cannot adjust to gadd playing matched grip! It's just not very gaddly of him! I wonder if he switched his style due to arthritis or CT maybe? who knows! What I do know is that he still sounds amazing!
Great!
