  • following this link from a 1.5 yrear old article about hipsters vs hasidics... first, I have nothing against the hacidics, I personally like how they dress and respect their beliefs. though, they CANNOT be allowed to push their personal beliefs out into public areas of the city!!!

nice work on repainting the lanes. if you think bike lanes do not make a difference, you are ignorant. its a FACT that the lanes create more awareness of where concentrated bicyclists are.

  • FUCK YEAH BIKE LANES

  • big deal lines on the street mean nothing ESPECIALLY to cyclists.

  • I bike 10 miles to get to work because I have no choice. The subway's no longer reliable, the fares are getting higher, and I'm not wasting my money on a car. So how else are we supposed to get to work?

They call us a "menace to the city" but it's the idiots who stand in the street that are the problem.

  • Whoever you dudes are that repainted these lanes. One word. RESPECT.

  • Nice.

  • I heard they took away this bike lane because of complaints of less parking and bad for businesses by the businesses in the area. I will make sure not to visit that area/shop there when I visit New York this year.

  • I use bedford ave, i bike from beford and beverley down in flatbush to the williamsburg bridge. yesterday I got yelled at by a dude in a minivan up where the lane officially ends. He told me not only was there no bike lane, but that I had no right to be ON THE ROAD AT ALL. thanks for repainting guys!

  • i use Bedford Avenue, like so many others, and am grateful you guys put this back. i appreciate the time, energy and money you guys dedicated to making me (and everyone) safer.

  • friggin rights they did!

  • Bunch of pansies

  • Your just going to get mowed down by a Jew wagon

  • Where can I donate some white paint for your cause? A Chicago bicycler.

  • I thought this was a very cool video. Awesome to see people overriding the government's wrong decisions and taking care of business themselves. We need people like this in so many other areas (food and gas prices, investment swindles, loads of money given to corporations, lying presidents, etc.). You guys are very inspiring.

  • 14 blocks of bike lanes... must have taken a long time! good luck with your fight!

  • They should have disguised themselves as city workers.

  • This area is run by hasidic jews and has been for about 70 years, they HATE bike riders and anyone who is not Jewish.

  • throw the jews down the well so my country can be free

  • Guys, you inspired us.

  • When the price of Gasoline hits $5 a gal. this fall, everyone will see how fast bike lanes will pop up... Soon the horse in buggy will make an apperance.

  • @johnnybagofdonets 9months later that didn't happen

  • See the illegal overnight parking of school buses on city streets. Williamsburg Hassidic/Satmars’ Community above the law having special privileges. The working tradesman with service truck having commercial plates doing late night emergency call gets ticket for overnight parking of commercial vehicle, though these buses unscathed. NYPD don’t want to encounter this group, in fear of retaliation. Cops that handcuff those individuals are seriously screwed. Blatantly, they’re on sovereign turf.

  • Wow they are so fucking awsome, they like painted their bike lane! yeah that will show the fuckers in the goverment whos the boss - the 20ft of self made bike lane... Morons...

  • @Ugabuga9

    gothamistDOTcom/2008/09/12/hasids_say_cyclists_too_sexy_for_bi.php

  • @johnnybagofdonets so? you live the fucking usa, youre supposed to be multicultural and shit.

  • If you hate the Bike Lanes,

Do not vote for mike again.

  • @MAYOGARDENS

Stick a fork in Mike; he is done, this past snow storm did him in... Mike doesn’t have a snowballs chance in hell for another term...NY'ers tired of Tyrannical Mad Mike including the Indo Carrabin community of busting all the residents of Richmond Hill for their basement apartments in making people homeless causing financial burdens and hardship; while the Hassdics /influence peddlers can build anything they want.

  • I can't believe the amount of negative rhetoric on this post. If anything, it shows how effective even a simple act of protest can be against the monopoly of car culture. The first step is raising awareness about the problem and the people affected. The first response, it seems, is the oppressors reacting with disgusting ignorance, personal attacks, and appeal to the tyranny of the majority.

In response to an earlier comment: google "Bike Lane Snowplow in Höör Sweden." We need bike streets!

  • hey great respect for practical courageous actions like that! reclaim the streets! car drivers can be egoistic retards giving their fucked up egos a little kick... not all are that bad but there are too many mindless idiots on the streets. disgusting

  • till this day i get cars fly by me @ 40mph on bedford racing towards the red light @ either myrtles or WBS east?

  • bedford avenue is the mecca for rejects.

  • @meikd423

    Fuck you. :)

  • @meikd423 - you judge yourself the way you judge others. i dont speak to you because you cant hear me there, deep in your cave!

  • I've lived in that neighborhood for 6 years, and never drove my car or bike down that road. It's loaded with parallel parkers and unloading buses. It's so choked with traffic you can barely move (except on Saturday, when you can fly down it). It was a very poor choice for a bike lane. It put the cyclists in the most congested part of the area. Kent Ave. now has an amazing, 2 lane, bike route that runs on a much wider street and it is way easier to traverse than Bedford.

  • @battlescar2001 Any negative comment about the Hasids is just jealousy of their political power. If the hipsters started voting as a block and donated to local politicians, they could add or remove as many bike lanes as they want.

  • Or you could have rented one the machines they actually use and be done in 30 seconds

Laughing because it probably washed off with the first rain

  • Keep Rollin

  • I've been reading an article about it - unfortunately, I can't link it in case YouTube thinks I'm sending you porn or phishing scams (or both) - and it seems that this very backward culture isn't objecting to the lane itself; just the naked legs of a few females. C'mon; live and let live, right? I mean, other 'backward' cultures like the Amish don't have a go at people with electricity in their houses, although in Amish culture that's banned. 'Get over it' may be appropriate here.

  • I hate me some hipsters, but fuck these Hasidic douchebags that think they're entitled to whatever the fuck they want just cuz their retarded religion dictates it. Does that mean anywhere there're Muslims that all women near them should wear Hijabs? All this bullshit over some guys not being able to avert their eyes when a girl in shorts comes rolling by on her fixie. RETARDED.

  • The double standard has to stop somewhere. They complain about it being a hazard, but they have all their children out in the street unsupervised most of the time. Young children like below the age of 8. When I walk my dog, they make barking noises at my dog and when my dog looks over and wants to go play they all scream like little banshee's and only THEN will I see their father come over and complain to me. Maybe they should put leashes on their children..

  • Fuck those Jews. I live on the same block with them here in Williamsburg and all they do is bitch about everything that everyone else is doing.. but it is perfectly ok for them to do what they are bitching about. This double standard as to stop. Fuck all this politically correct shit. STOP GIVING PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE SCARED IT MAY START A PREJUDICE COMPLAINT.

  • good work,

  • We stand up for our rights.

  • Hell yeah. Fight the powers that be.

  • The city for the persons, and the bicycles. It was the Tyranny of the cars, and his poisonous gases of the pipe of leak

  • I applaud these AMERICANS standing up for AMERICAN freedoms. These religious nuts should go to Israel if they can't handle the site of American women bicycling.

  • The Hassids have no objection to seeing women bicycling. They just want to be cretain that the road will be shared.

Keep in mind, these "religious nuts" aren't the ones whose children vandalize property and shoplift.

  • what a JOKE. I've seen the hassids in strip clubs, i've seen them pick up hookers. is that worse than "vandalizing"? because i think it is.

THEY DONT WANT TO SHARE THE ROAD. THEY WANT IT ALL FOR THEMSELVES.

  • @tbailey2185

you clearly have no idea whats goin on. so why post?

  • I am not taking any sides with anyone dude. I am just stating the reality of the situation. If they want those bike lanes taken down, that's what is going to happen.

  • We are a bunch of recent NY transplants who were raised by helicopter parents.

We are the children of Mommy and Daddy who denied us nothing in life. We are entitled to whatever we want, and everyone else in the community be damned. We have every right to turn NY into our little post-college playground.

Btw, I'm all about bikes and bike lanes, but the way these fucks approached this is the way they approach everything: with smug, self-righteous privilege.

  • AWESOME !

  • Love IT! Please send template for San Francisco to use.

  • Srsly? Over here cyclists are suing to get rid of that kind of crap bicycle lanes.

  • inspirational! i wish you all the wind at your back on every hill you cycle :)

  • That's what I'm talking about!

And I linked through Lance's Twitter Page.

    Power to the People!

  • Great job! Keep up the good work.

  • i bet they ride fixies

  • You guys are awsome! and very correct, why would they remove bike lanes? Good job

  • Tip to the head.

  • Legends. Power to the People. Total support from OZ.

  • Hott.

  • Rock on Guys ....fight the power ....ROTHAR POWER :)

  • well done.

  • Awesome...keep safe!!

  • Dang, you guys just lucked up having lance tweet this... WTG

  • keep fighting the good fight

  • good effort lads and ladies, Most people are told to be fitter by doing more exercise, and help the planet by not driving everywhere. I'm with you guys, the government should be putting more of them in, not taking them away!

  • 5 stars well done guys !!! BTW this vid has been seen by lance armstong .. n he recommended it

  • This part of Bedford Avenue is overcrowded with institutions and schools. Even before the bike lane, there was a lot of car and school bus traffic. Thats why the city (after pressure) removed the Bike lane.

Some people (especially some secular Jews) took it personal, and thought this is a religious issue. Its not.

  • It's not a matter of being "inconvenienced," Alexis, it's a matter of being flattened by an SUV. But I'll admit, that would be inconvenient.

  • Thumbs up. I read literally the same + and - comments like in Budapest, where we are also forced to create our lanes since the municipality doesn't do much, in spite the fact that the number of cyclists is doubling every year.

  • very good! this is very serious. Car drivers should be thanking the bikers for making their trip easier by reducing the number of cars.

  • rad

  • you guys are damn awesome. Good job.

  • Unfortunately, that is true. Many cyclists either don't know or don't care that they're subject to the same traffic laws as cars, but I have to wonder what city you live in that all the drivers actually follow the traffic laws. It certainly can't be NYC, because on my daily commute, I see anywhere between 5 and 10 cars breaking some type of traffic law. So if we go by your logic, you should be against drivers too. (con't)

  • And when it comes to whether or not we actually use the bike lanes, NYC bicycle laws states that a cyclist must use a provided bike lane, unless they are preparing to turn, or there is a hazard in the bike lane that would endanger the cyclist. And considering the state of disrepair that some of the city's roads are in, that happens quite often. So before you go and say we don't use the bike paths we're given, you should check and see if they're actually safe to use. The Bedford Ave. lane was.

  • ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH

  • you guys are so awesome. wow.

  • I don't live on the east coast, so forgive my ignorance of what's happening over there; my question is, why would a group of Jews, or anyone for that matter, want bike lanes removed?

I realize there are a lot of bicyclists who don't obey traffic laws, and that there are a lot of auto drivers who hate bicyclists (and pedestrians as well), but if removing bike lanes has to do with a ridiculous war between auto drivers & cyclists, it's a stupid reason to have bike lanes removed.

  • The majority of the reason is that there are a lot of schools on Bedford [as you can see them painting the lines right in front of a school & its buses]

A lot of the bikers who bike thru here are arrogant assholes who don't stop for the flashing red light of the school bus and scoot around or fly right by kids getting off the bus... a second part is cultural:people who have been here for decades being told what to do by newcomers.

There is a bike lane 2 blocks away that goes to same bridge

  • @LIBshark - You can insult cyclists all you want, but the truth is that your generalizations have no ground at all. More people in this city ride bikes than drive cars, which means that yes, there are the hipsters that you seem to hate so much, but there are also other people who commute to work in office buildings and retail spaces all over the place. And then there are those who simply ride for fun, and there are far to many different types of people that do that to begin to categorize them.

  • And it's not because of all the schools on Bedford Ave, unless of course you're referring to the fact that cyclists don't always live up to the standards of modest attire that religious schools seem to have. The truth of the matter is that cyclists are too sexy for the Jews that live in the area. That's why they opposed the bike lane on Bedford. And without that bike lane, the street is a much more dangerous place for cyclists, especially since we will continue to use Bedford, even without it.

  • That's why these people repainted the lanes. Because to be honest, I don't give a damn about your religious convictions if they're going to interfere with my ability to travel safely, and I don't think many of the other cyclists in this city do either. If the city takes away our ability to be safe, we're going to take it right back.

  • So, a bunch of kids deciding to spraypaint their own lines on the street somehow contributes to public safety? If I think the speed limit's too low, should I just change it?

  • Bicycles, being classified as vehicles, can't legally be ridden on the sidewalk. But since a bicycle weighs 20 pounds, and a car weighs several tons, cyclists are much safer with some form of separation, even if it is just a painted line.

So yes, it is for public safety. Bike lanes keep cars, bicycles and pedestrians separated.

Speed limits on the other hand benefit only drivers, and in a city with more bikes and pedestrians than cars, they're a minority.

  • My point was that private citizens can't just take the law into their own hands and change traffic signage to suit their own purposes. Even if a legally mandated bike lane would improve safety for everyone, illegally painting a lane under cover of night is petty and reckless. If there's such an overwhelming majority on these cyclists' side, shouldn't they be able to persuade Bloomberg to put the lane back without resorting to childish pranks? (cont'd)

  • . . . He obviously cares more about cultivating his Mr. Green image nationwide than about real New Yorkers' opinions, so I'm not buying the angle that he's beholden to the Orthodox community. Guy got re-elected by self-righteous bike riders.

  • Many cyclists aren't as involved with issues like these. The only thing most ever hear about is a new bike lane opening up or something like that, which is a mask for how this city is really trying to restrict us. So even though we're a majority, we don't have much influence to go through legal channels. And in fact, bike advocacy organizations like Time's Up! and Transportation Alternatives have been fighting the lane's removal since it was proposed, and we all know how well that worked...

  • And this may seem like a childish prank to you, but it's really meant to be a statement. Approximately 204 cyclists have been killed by cars since they started keeping records in 1995, and if the city takes away what is basically our only form of protection from those cars, that number is going to grow faster than it has before. We're going to do what it takes to keep ourselves safe and prevent that from happening, especially if the city isn't willing to do so.

  • @ex4579

Its not simple about modesty , its about you dont give a damn for our kids getting off a school bus,

  • If that's the real issue, look at it from a cyclist's perspective; If you were worried about dangerous drivers around your kid's school, would you ask the city to ban cars from the streets around it? No, you would probably ask them to enforce traffic laws more strictly. Traffic laws also apply to cyclists, and the ones that pose a risk to your children are the ones that don't follow them, so why didn't you ask the city to start enforcing them better instead of restricting our safe travel?

  • See, now that's a good point.

  • @ex4579

First of all, the cars are blocked by the school buses when loading and unloading kids, they position the bus so that cars cant usually pass, but bikes is you cant block. Secondly; we did ask the 90 Precinct to enforce the law for cyclists, and the responds was, we dont have enough police to do that

And by the way, the bike lane was not completely removed, the outside white mark (the traffic side) is staying for your safety

  • I know that the buses are able to block the cars, I was speaking hypothetically.

Even so, there are still other alternatives rather than taking away our lane. Why not have the bus drop your kids off on a cross street, off of Bedford? Why not have a crossing guard outside the schools to help keep your kids safe? You can argue your point all you want, but the truth is that if the school bus thing was the real issue, and not the way we dress, there are other things that could have been done.

  • And on top of that, a single white line is not the same as a dedicated lane. With a lane in place, a driver knows that there are cyclists in the area, and to respect our space on the road accordingly. A line with nothing else, doesn't tell a driver what he's avoiding by staying on his side, so they won't respect it the way that most respect bike lanes.

  • yeah a bike is going to kill your kids? the first issue was the way women were dressed whom rode there bikes on bedford this road is used by all you can remove that lane all you want people will always use that street to get to where their goning you must not give a damn for peoples lives

  • that about sum up at the shit bag hipsters in san franpsycho.

nothing but rich little kids whom i love watching get punked by thugs. thugs love these kids and their pussy ways.

    SUCK IT HIPSTERS

  • Why did the Hasidic community want to eliminate the lane?

  • They're not hipsters you asshat.

  • Bikers = speed bumps around here !

  • oh yeah and I've ridden that bike lane before too it's all good. when I come back to NYC I will ride with my dick in the wind through bedford!! I hope all those religious idiots see my wee wee! I will ride in the summer so it's not all shrinky dink of course!

  • of course...

  • FUCK YES! what a bunch of ASSHOLES the community is for taking away a fucking bike lane. KEEP THE FAITH BIKE RIDERS THE WORLD IS WATCHING AND CHEERING!!

    -LOS ANGELES

  • Where's Al Sharpton when you need him?

    :-D

  • Why can't the bikers ride on Kent Ave?. it has to be only on bedford Ave. were the traffic is big and dangers for pedestrians?

  • 'cause the hipsters are hypocrites who have to "have it their way", they come into a nabe and try to force people who have been living there for decades to bend to their will...

I'm glad in this case it didn't work....

  • @LIBshark & laraza99 I don't think you understand why they did this.

Those bike lanes had been there for a long time and until a bunch of idiots decided to whine and complain about them until the city removed them. Kind of like you guys whining and complaining about these guys and over using the word "brat" (laraza99).

How are they being brats if their just ensuring their own safety? A lot of people prefer biking and its just senseless to remove the lanes and put bikers in more danger.

  • do you know the definitions of the words your using. what about this video suggests laziness,k or being spoiled?

does this video honestly offend you in some way? i could imagine watching your reactiosn is somewhat similar to shaking an ant farm, " AHHHHHHHHHHHH! the foundation of my world is literally shaking!!!!"

  • Bedford Ave. doesn't have that much traffic...

  • " but it makes me crazy when I see so many bicyclists IGNORING proper road rules."

Are you mad that thousands and thousands of pedestrians in NYC ignore proper pedestrian rules? The only people who uphold them are tourists.

Are you mad that thousands and thousands of cars violate the rules of the road each day - far more times and in greater numbers than there are cyclists?

Whether cyclists violate rules isn't germane.

  • Multiple forms of transportation make a city go round. Transportation is not defined by a group, it's sad to see what's going on NYC. Public safety put on the line b/c some Jews took offense to it. The largest city in the US never was the most bike friendly so it doesn't really matter.

  • More power!!! We need to be safe out there, and the law should not support some while trampling on others!!! literally.

  • Look up the term Lawful Rebellion

    Great stuff. x

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent usage of direct action to affect local-based change. Way to go!!

  • ......how do you not have better things to do with your life?

  • Excellent!!

  • Also if you think trying to reduce pollution is so unimportant tell that to my father who died of lung cancer when i was 8. He served during the Korean War for YOU. Army and Air Force, Sergeant Major Ronald Proctor.

  • Bike lanes are a matter of safety. These bicyclists are obviously commuting, not joyriding, if they're riding somewhere so full of traffic. If the majority of the city used their own cars, not bikes or public transportation then there would be too much congestion to get anywhere. For that matter, more ppl shouldn't be so selfish and should choose to use alternate transportation -like bikes.

Besides, not everyone can afford a car in this economy.

  • Not everyone even wants a car in this city! I want the streets safer for bicyclists, not more hazardous.

  • Don't misunderstand me. I agree with you, more bike lanes, but it makes me crazy when I see so many bicyclists IGNORING proper road rules. If we get bike lanes we need to use them correctly. Go WITH the flow of traffic. Safer bike lanes=safer bikers. Smarter bikers=safer pedestrians. It's really not too much to ask of all parties. Let's all be smarter from the top to the bottom.

  • you are a fucking idiot.

  • Two words: Brandy Bailey. She was killed (sideswiped by a truck) on her bike when she was riding home to Brooklyn after work, via Houston street in Manhattan.

WE NEED MORE CLEARLY-MARKED BIKE LANES, NOT FEWER. PERIOD.

  • Hey Quinn i hope your alright man , i saw this report on the news & i thank you for Putting Back the Lines , screw the jews let them see the lovely ladies....

  • GREAT VOICE KEEP UP THE FIGHT IT'S your city for the people( WE THE PEOPLE) NOT THE FAT RATS WHO HAVE MONEY TO CONTROL........

  • I love this. I'm not too thrilled with hipsters, but I ride a bike dammit. Screw your religion.

  • these religious fanatic terrorists need to be stopped. they dress funny too.

  • What song is that? I love it.

  • A pathetic and innappropriate attempt to use religion aginst riding a bike.... hahahaha... it makes me laugh everytime... the lanes are for safety, as for congestion... take mass transit

  • What we have here is a clash between two of the biggest primmadonna's in NYC save the Al Sharpton crew--Hasidic Jews and twenty something Hipsters. Personally I'm glad the Hasids won because the bicycling thing is waaaay out of hand in the city. To appease a very small number of people (bike riding hipsters) the city has increased congestion by creating all these retarded bike lanes. Get used to it hipsters.

  • @brazenturkey

"the bicycling thing is waaaay out of hand in the city."

Hahaaa, fucking gold. It takes people like you to remind the rest of us that hipsters really aren't so bad after all.

  • Well then it's better that they're on a bike and not in a car doing the same shit.

And maybe they're riding on the street and not at the park because they're actually going somewhere. Just a thought.

  • I don't like *either* of them. Both groups have crabbed morality - the Hasids fighting the 20th Century (not to mention the 21st), and the hipsters thinking the earth revolves around them and their living the lives of poor people with a lot of money.

A pox on both of them.

  • Radioreporter01, when are you going to submit that report to the FBI? HAHAHA!

You just love spamming forums with your hatred don't you, troll?
