I find it hard to believe that that is a true laser for several reasons.

1- it doesn't show up in the original footage

2- The "dot" is way to big to be a lazor dot when you look at the video the "dot" is at probably at least a foot big. (which come on lasers from laser guided missile are not nearly that big).

3- The laser is not steady at all (which real lasers are)

4-The laser travels very far from the origin (a real painted laser would stay well within a foot of its origin)

Of course it would be for this type of LD system. They are typically projected from long distance and (while invisible to the human eye and analog equipment) is easily picked up by guidance sensors and in this case a digital camera. Oh, and I know that small UAV is not a Predator.

The "seamless" effect you mention is say...did you ever use a flashlight? Move it across surfaces and buildings. You will notice the similarities. If any digital camera could pick up IR designation lasers, it would be easy and cheap for the enemy to detect an incoming attack. Our engineers are smarter than that. Interestingly enough, nose cones and forward wing edges are coated with DU even on commercial jets (which this is not). It WOULD make for a good cutting device. Couple the DU and speed of approx 575mph and (according to some research) a missle hit just before jet entry makes everything you see very possible. For newbies; DU = "depleted uranium". It is "waste" from uranium processing but still has a radioactive half life of 4.5 million years. DU is used in military munitions as well. nasty stuff

Uh, no on the DU thing man. I've been in the aviation industry for 15 years now and have never seen any type of plane with a DU nose cone. Like Kenzofeis said, most are either carbon fiber (or some other composite like Kevlar) or aluminum. A few supersonic planes have titanium leading edge spars and nose cones, but not commercial jets. The plane cut through the building thanks to pure kinetic energy (1.2 million PSI by my calculations, but I could be wrong). Same way AP rounds work: pure speed.

My dad was an airframe mechanic for a major airlines for years and he tells me that there was DU on leading edges of planes wings etc. I don't know for sure about the nosecone, but he told me that corrosion was an issue and the guys hated working around that stuff. I'm sure kinetic energy as you describe had more to do with the ability of the plane to slice into the towers though...good comment!

Ok. The woman who captured this footage is Jennifer Spell. And the camera she used was an inferior camcorder with an abysmal IR cut-off filter lens. So by using a shitty camcorder with an equally shitty IR cut-off filter lens will capture stuff that you necessarily don't want captured. The whole point of an IR cut-off filter lens is to filter out stray forms of light. But thankfully she happened to record this anomaly that others never captured.
