If it weren't for science, we would most probably all be extinct by now or very close. These two theories pretty much sum up the evolution of life on this planet and life in our universe. Life on earth is explained by "The Journey of man", by Spencer Wells, n geneticist & "The Drake equation", by Frank Drake an Astrophysicist. If you watch or read about these to facts and then you still don't understand, Don't feel bad you're just like the other 5-1/2 billion people idiots on the planet.
hey twit, teflon was invented by accident in 1936 by dupont and the chemist wasnt working on anything related to space by the way teflon is what makes those frying pans non stick. you dumb ignorant bastard.
did everyone know our sun is a ticking time bomb and so we will go extinct someday
so quite worrying about global warming and fucking up the planet or killing off species because in the long run it doesnt fucking matter. glad we got that out of the way.
@datzfast Yeah well our star, sun isn't gonna explode anytime soon, humans still need plants and probably always will to survive, even in that time when and IF humans can make some huge space ships to leave this place, they still probably need some mini forests there. Global warming can be serious thing but I also hate if some hippie says that "omg don't you recycle everything what you throw away", or when my phone tells me to unplug the charger what barely even uses electricity when it's off :D
@isokessu clearly the exploding star means something to you. not me. i wont ever be leaving earth in a giant forest filled interstellar life raft. i have a sneaky suspicion no one will. not even the species that replaces us someday.
@datzfast If we have to im Sure an intelligent Race of aliens will understand If they have any sense of Caring which they could and might then they won't Allow a Intelligent Race to die out Plus in Five billion years are Race would be more advanced then we will understand
i always been in love with science it goes to biologie microbiologie biochmestry to astrnomy ,phyic and gentics but it seems that people do not seems to attracted to it the only thing taht i see aroud me is people wich their only goald is after works sit infront on the tv that amuse them self and just past theknowleg that wich is so much more amusing and exinting to me
I'm afraid you've misunderstood. It was the first detection of two different pulsars, (neutron stars), in different parts of the sky. The frequencies were slightly different also, one was 1.33 secs, the other 1.25 secs (I think).
She'd discovered a completely unknown kind of stellar phenomenon. This also gave extra credence to the theory of black holes.
@martiangrundy oh, so there were actually 2 of them? so then how did they classify it as another star? what if it was just a normal star with like heat waves?
Because our understanding of the workings of a star precluded this.
As Jocelyn Bell says, it was giving out VAST amounts of "energy", and beaming it out too, meaning it was very massive. BUT due to the rotation period, on the order of around a second, it had to paradoxically be very small.
If you've any other questions, or would like a fuller explanation, PM me, I'll try to get back to you between crimbo and new year.
the human brain spends a lot of "computational power usage" to decipher facial expression of other, so when one needs to think hard (about speaking in this case) normally you will not look to the face of other... but i am not sure this is the case here.
"For my money", I think I'd rather see it go into greater research for curing diseases, colving world hunger, and the end of suffering for humanity. How does atrophysics compare to the science of bioloogy, agriculture, and all the other sciences that actually contribute to the betterment of our species and our world? Why take your family to Disneyland when they're going hungry?
Appears to be nothing more than aristocratic arrogance to me.
An edit feature would be better for correcting type-O's. It's nice to see you have a useful skill though. Proof readers contribute more than astrophysicist. Lol!!!!
Just from a theoretical point of view, which would be more detrimental to humanity; donating a fraction of a percent of science research to cosmology, or being stuck on this rock when a meteor hits us...with no warning and no way to evacuate the Earth?
I think they both have their places in an argument about ethics, but the reality is science/life would exist without ethics. Science exists because people are interested in answering questions, everything else is secondary.
Consider then the Scientists who study this. Are you saying that they aren't allowed to study Astrophysics because they should be studying something else? They probably love their work like crazy.
I can agree that there are bigger issues here, but the reason no one is studying how to solve these problems is lack of interest. Create interest and you create people who want to be Scientists for it.
It's not right to force people from their preferred study. If I was forced, I'd just as soon quit.
Little green men? What would they be looking for? Little green women, perhaps.
Seriously, this is a great clip; watching it to me is like looking at the Sistine Chapel; I feel a certain awe and sense of (dare I say) reverence. Good job.
not only do many still look to the paranormal, but they will take images from hubble (and other telescopes) & use them as proof of god over science, ignoring entirely the facts about how we got those images in the first place.
i think we can all feel your frustration with religion richard... but its still cool just to hear you talk about the science you love so much :-)
I love reading about Science, but people I talk to don't find it very interesting so I am often alone in my excitement when new discoveries are found.
I hope so, but considering how politics is normally run, I'm not going to hold my breath.
Maybe if people understood more about how the world worked we would have a population that would question things more often instead of just taking the easy way out and letting the vocal minorities decide everything by virtue of being the loudest or most sensational and not necessarily by being correct.
Listen to the Skeptic's guide to the Universe podacast. Its five science enthusiasts that are funny and entertaining and its like having five friends that are all knowledgeable and agreeable.
Richard Hawkings is NOT DEAD! I read a revue of he's health in ScientificAmerica 2 or 3 months ago he ok but might loose the ability to move he's fingers rendering him completly speechless
Yes Stephen Hawking is the one that will lose abiltiy to move he's fingers soon and will be completly without the abiltiy to speak. Sorry with all the Dawking Hawking i got confused myself and wrote richard hawkings. :p

I love Richard Dawkins. I just hope he doesn't die any time soon. All of the people I've wanted to meet in my life are either very old and will probably die relatively soon, or are recently deceased (Michael Crichton, Stephen J. Gould, Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, etc.)
no, I said either recently deceased or "very old and will probably die relatively soon". Stephen Hawking is pretty old and probably doesn't have more than a decade or two left. Which is kind of a depressing thought.
although he was told in his early 20s he had only a few months or somthing to live and hes lived this far so who knows, he may find a way to freeze himself until they can cure this disease :)
I have this entire video, it is pretty good. I'm a new subscriber, but if you are up for uploading, I recommend "Growing Up In The Universe." I think that DVD series is some of the best/easiest to help those who do not understand evolution to actually grasp it.
This is very true - the more you understand of it, the more exciting it becomes. Those who despise science (creationists, religious folk etc) are those who are completely and utterly ignorant of it. Good video.
That chick what found that new kinda star is hot.
