This guy is awesome. I have never seen anyone layer up their own basslines and play a lead break over them on a bass before. He makes it look so easy.
Legendary?... God?... I'm not so convinced. Perhaps he's just really good? He can sure engage that Korean audience though... He makes it look fun! Kudos!!!
It's an 8 string bass made by Tune. You can find them online, they have a website, but the basses themselves are very difficult to find in the USA. The 8 strings are paired, to give a full, almost chorus-like effect, like a 12 string guitar.
Tune is a great japanese bass company. If you get a chance to play one you should. They use great woods, have fantastic electronics, and are really playabel, especially if you like a fast, skinny funk neck. They make great basses.
ive only heard this from someone so im not sure if im explaining right. he custom designed the bass to have ?harnomic? strings with the normal strings so it sounds more full. so 8 string :D
that's just my point of view as a musician. Yes he is good technically. in fact very good. But as a musician as a whole, I don't believe so. showing it to people is indeed different to showing off to people. He's really good but not the best. :)
To me it just seems like he is performing like any other musician, playing good music, and loving what he is playing. It does not seem like showing off at all. If this is showing off, than playing music in generaly must be showing off.
well that's your point of view. different from mine. I do believe he does love his music & I agree he does play good music. I didn't say anything about his music being bad. What I was pointing out was his attitude on "how" he played. You might not have seen it but that's what I saw. This doesn't make him a bad bassist. I'm just saying he isn't the best. his bass solo doesn't generalize music. There are other great bass solos out there and it would still be just a partial of what music really is.
I was talking on his attitude on how he played the bass. I mean like he just wanted to show his talent and how good he plays his bass rather than his music itself. Pretty much, that's what not-so-keen listeners or watchers experienced, at least to my observation. But tehcnically, he is really really good. Not just the best
Well, really, they are not guitar strings, as guitar strings are too short. They are just like the strings in a 12 string guitar. They are strung in pairs, each large string with a smaller string, which are tuned slightly off. This creates a fuller sound, and also a natural chorus effect.
No offense to any extreme fans who jerk off to this guy. I will admit he is good but this solo live sounds like a toddler smacking pans together and giggling in the background, and if you say he is a God than pleace tell me what Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, Mark King, Jeff Berlin, Billy Sheehan, Vail Johnson Les Claypool and Bootsy Collins are and yes I know some of these arn't bass players who use the slap technique.
No in my opinion what I said is exactaly what his music sounds like live, but if you put him in a recording studio where he can do every little mistake over and over it sounds good.
In all fairness, have you listened to anything else he's played, with Casiopea or other? Yes, the folks you've listed are excellent in their own right, and yes, of course he's playing to the audience.... That's why he's there(!).
He's got chops. Might not be your fave, but still. I play bass, have been for a few years, and I'd like to have his proficiency. I try to practice every day. Do you play? And really, "jerk off"? Do we have to start in the toilet to discuss someone's merits?
Like I said,"No offense to any extreme fans who jerk off to this guy." but he sounds awful live I never said he couldn't play bass, and yes I know he is playing to the fans but at least he could try and sound a little better. Also yes I do play bass, and also big whoop if you played bass a couple years how many of them did you take lessons. Most people don't do to good learning bass by themself.
I've been a professional musician/educator for many years (trumpet & trombone). I played bass in a band in my youth & recently picked it up again; I DO know my way around a concert hall, thanks. I'm taking lessons from a very accomplished guitarist/bassist to unlearn some bad habits & polish my technique. Again, have you listened to his other stuff here on YouTube? (Audio online isn't always good.) What do you think about Casiopea's other bassist? I try to learn something from everyone, do you?
Yes I have listened to his other stuff from Casiopea's and I will agree he is good I never said he wasn't good. I did phrase it wrong in saying his solo's live sound like crap only this one does. Although my point was he isn't a god of slap as there are people out there better than him.
Jaco?! Just where in the hell do you hear Jaco's inspiration in this?
Personally I think he's playing the bass solely for the entertainment of a crowd of non-bass-players. He's got a lot of showman-ship and plays to the crowd very well. His goal is achieved. He probably has a car much better than my '96 B2300 with no power steering or radio.
I was being sarcastic. I don't even play guitar. I was making a campy comment about how apathetic the general public reacts to bass solos. It obviously went over your head.
that actually made me laugh a little just cause it was so fun to watch. they can really put on a show, those two dudes. (is that drummer akira something? he looks vaguely familiar) anyway, that was really cool.

Good video, good crowd pleaser. Definitely knows his way around the instrument. God of slapping?? Hardly...some of his technique gets sloppy at higher speeds. Bill Dickens could liquify that guy
Why does he have to have "inhuman" or "Godly" skill in order to recieve a compliment? The dude is better than any of you, I'm sure. I'm a bassist and have been for years now, and he's better than me, by far. You people are overly critical... = /
It's not conceit, it's part of the show. I do agree, though, it's not quite as tasteful as I expected. He's got great technique, but nothing inhuman. If you want insane slapping, look up Victor Wooten, or Stanley Clarke, even Steward Hamm (not sure on the spelling for that last one).
Tiresome, indeed. He's got lots of chops, but very little taste. Lots of "flash", but not much musicality. To me, he comes across as being very conceited; just wankin' on his bass. He should have ended this solo after the multi-track riff routine.
those people who think flea is better than narucho are stupid idiots i mean really....those who think flea invented slap bass are even more stupid. jus posers who dun noe anything about music
although i respect and love flea he is in no way the "granddaddy of funk." You wanna check out the real masters? Louis johnson and Larry Graham were both slapping and popping while FLEA was in diapers. However, flea still rocks!
nah he dont, not compares the the classics like Larry Graham, Stanely Clarke and Louis Johnson. but i just dont like him and his style i think hes over rated. but thats jsut my opinion.
how could you compare them to narucho? they play funk he doesnt in a sense...Larry Graham, Stanely Clarke and Louis Johnson are good but they are talked about way to much and u can consider then overrated
This guy is good, but the real god of bass is Flea. Hes the Granddaddy of funk. He was slapping and popping our pants of when this guys was still wearing diapers.
Anyone that says that this guys doesn't respect the origins of funk bass is completely clueless. Victor Wooten does this thing too, alot of over lapping samples and back in the day the grandaddy of funk bass Larry Graham used distortion to beef up his sound so dont you people tell me this guys doesnt respect or cant play funk.
Flea is still king

Hes like Japans answer to Les Claypool. Is that an 8 string bass he has there? What make of bass is that anyway?
scottyrhj 2 years ago
Hey Scottyrhj
An 8 string bass has the same principle as the 12 string guitar.
I don't know exactly the tuning on an 8-string bass.
It is (after what I have heard) meant to be used for chordal playing, and have a better "ring" sound out of the bass.
Personally I do find it difficult to play an 8-string, but hey everyone I do recommend to try one. It is most fun ever
AdrianStick 2 years ago

It's not conceit, it's part of the show. I do agree, though, it's not quite as tasteful as I expected. He's got great technique, but nothing inhuman. If you want insane slapping, look up Victor Wooten, or Stanley Clarke, even Steward Hamm (not sure on the spelling for that last one).

cliff pwns him...

Tiresome, indeed. He's got lots of chops, but very little taste. Lots of "flash", but not much musicality. To me, he comes across as being very conceited; just wankin' on his bass. He should have ended this solo after the multi-track riff routine.

although i respect and love flea he is in no way the "granddaddy of funk." You wanna check out the real masters? Louis johnson and Larry Graham were both slapping and popping while FLEA was in diapers. However, flea still rocks!
Klewt 4 years ago
nah he dont, not compares the the classics like Larry Graham, Stanely Clarke and Louis Johnson. but i just dont like him and his style i think hes over rated. but thats jsut my opinion.
xThumperxbassx 4 years ago
how could you compare them to narucho? they play funk he doesnt in a sense...Larry Graham, Stanely Clarke and Louis Johnson are good but they are talked about way to much and u can consider then overrated

I said flea is overrated not narucho, he is amazing. i beleve flea is overrated.

motoxchamp321 4 years ago
Exactly, because he is under rated. flea gets more fame and publicity than he diserves

This guy is good, but the real god of bass is Flea. Hes the Granddaddy of funk. He was slapping and popping our pants of when this guys was still wearing diapers.
MisterChef 4 years ago
Are you kidding me? Flea is 44, this guy is like 56.
Vivirandum 4 years ago
My bad, he looks way younger. I take it back.
IMO Flea is still better though... :)

Anyone that says that this guys doesn't respect the origins of funk bass is completely clueless. Victor Wooten does this thing too, alot of over lapping samples and back in the day the grandaddy of funk bass Larry Graham used distortion to beef up his sound so dont you people tell me this guys doesnt respect or cant play funk.

come on that was crap, slapping should ba about the funk, where was the funk in that?? flea could bitch slap this guy back to the stone age
