  • nice!

  • I think it`s a great idea! Don`t know how much energy it saves, but at least it unites people around the world, even though for an hour.

  • 8.30 is at different times all across the world

  • Ever think of the surge when everyone in the world turns their power back on?

  • *.30 is at different times all over the world dummy

  • theres no such thing as magic

  • many times they show same thing twice

  • this should happen monthly :)

  • I turned all my lights ON.....

  • hoho the lights in ur heart on

  • Hong Kong turned off their lights three times ?!Impressive. What the fuck..

  • swordofjutice u are so stupid. its not about the light right now,but its about how ur children will be survive on this global warming. js for an hour,so much issue in ur blood complaning. stupid human been.

  • It's not a natural cycle dumbass..........we didn't expect the north and south pole to melt almost half way icecaps are melting really fast if the north and south pole melt all the beaches will be gone :( be cause of the water overflow :(

and earth hour is to show how we care about the earth as a world

  • It is actually a natural cycle its just the humans are speeding up the process

  • yeah.

  • wheres singapore?Swordofjutice failed to understand the meaning of earth hour,Shame On You! the power plant may be open but theres a sgnificant amount of people consuming eletricity,so,earth hour is to save electicity for an hour(as a world)

  • and where is chile?

  • Just a correction - Brasília does not have a Christ the Redeemer. The places that are showed with lights turning off are the political centers of Brazil, Esplanada dos Ministérios, Palácio do Planalto and the cathedral, all designed by Oscar Niemeyer.

About the post of swordofjutice, sorry to tell you that we didn´t expect to save eletric power, we expected to tell the world that we care about Earth and we are worried with the climate crises. Shame on you if you can´t understand that...

  • where is Chicago ? where is Dubai ?, San Fransisco ? you showed Hong Kong for three times .

  • mexico?? where is mexico??

  • :| DID YOU LEARN GEOGRAPHY

  • Comment removed

  • doesnt matter how much it effectively did to the world, at least its SOME kinde of action

  • y mexico?

  • where's chicago!!!?!??!?!?!?

  • ok but how much did it change???

  • I turned off my lights this year, even though it was only for an hour it was still good to give the Earth this time

  • where's rome??

  • Where is Kuala Lumpur? Our major landmarks turned off the lights too! This is not a complete worldwide rollout...

  • Also, it amazes me to see the photos of places with the lights on and off, and on again. It looks like the sun is about to rise or set when the lights are on; they're so bright that they make the blue colour of the sky much brighter! It's never really night. Light are everywhere. If we want true darkness, we have to block our windows or go far from any city. It's such a shame.

  • I love that Earth Hour was such a large event this year! I remember my disappointment in 2008 when Denmark barely recognised it. This year there was concerts, candle parades, church concerts and so much more. And I looked out the window and saw all the light on my street go out. It's not about actually saving CO2 on this day, but create awareness about our lives on earth and what we are most likely doing to it. Our one and only home. Maybe not too much danger for us, but for children to come.

  • beautiful. :D

  • I was in NYC during the 2003 blackout. Even though it was hot as hell without our air conditioners it was amazing, like entering a sweet silence. There's nothing like having the rug swept from under you and realizing that you're still okay.

  • my mom cheated she kept on 1 or 2 night nights

  • first i have to say, that i like this idea very much! but i heard, that it would overstrains the power stations, when the people are switching on all the lights at once... is that true?

  • yes, its an attention generating stunt. its about making people aware that we need to take action or pledge for the earth. turning the lights off doesnt mean "yeay were saving the planet already" but showing people that they could participate just by turning it off. how much improvement it will be if we could do something more than turning the lights off? this is just showing that people should cooperate and be aware.

  • Concern over the environment is something I hold a lot of value over, for the generations that follow. However, this is nothing more than a pointless attention-generating stunt. So tell me -- what did we learn from this? Did we really achieve anything of sustainable benefit? You could shut the whole world down for one day ... EVERYTHING ... and it wouldn't make one damn bit of a difference when you look at what's going on every day. This is ridiculous.

  • it's creating awareness

  • i totally celebrated this day on the 28

  • RIO =D

  • but also the change in societal behavior on the surface of the planet during that x-amount of time when it is dark. granted there could be some dishonest people who would take advantage of this to exploit untrustworthy possibilities, but the unpredictability and variety of human reaction would be nice to witness.

  • i think that whether you believe in the deterioration of the environment or not, switching off the lights for an hour or up to an entire day is an interesting movement. it is true about only the landmarks shutting off, but imagine if everyone did it, it would be really interesting not only to see a recording from satellite view, (... continued)

  • most parts of my country have planned power cuts for atleast 6 hours a day- India

  • I wonder how carbondioxide the chopper released while filming in the clip, probably more than it costs to have the lights on the whole year.

  • Haha......no one even close to where I live conserve shit! No one really cared and no one will ever care

  • I love how all these landmarks shut down, but all around them, not a single light is off. Good to know not everyone is as ignorant as Earth Hour lemmings.

  • Comment removed

  • TsaaloPhoenix, this year's Earth Hour participants included national, state, local and provincial governments, large corporations and global law firms. I am employed by one of the aforementioned entities. If we are all "lemmings" and you're not, why is the planet sliding toward an abyss?

  • @destroistheduke you are wrong, there is a climate change and its happening now!

We are destroying this planet, with the ignorance of people wasting electricity, leaving tv/lights/pc on 24/7, pollution! Thats why the polar ice caps are melting! The sun doesnt control the climate, currently we are causing Global Warming! The hotter the planet becomes, the more we destroy it!

  • So what your saying is "our polar ice caps are melting because of people wasting electricity" and "The sun doesnt control the climate". WOW these are really well thought out scientific hypothesis. I'm glad you did some research........LOL.....Can you verify the Sun thing for me with evidence??? I bet those comments you made that got removed were really intelligent as well. Look im not trying to be an ass just do your own research. Not everything TV says is true buddy....I miss common sense.....

  • god you have some altitude problems! What is your problem?! Yes our polar ice caps are melting because of electricity wasters, we put gases into the atmosphere to create that electricity!

I have done my research thanks, not need to get jealous because of us smart people :)

I didnt get this info of the TV, if you dont care about the Planet why are you still here? Just because people are trying to put the point forward to everyone e.g Earth Hour, why dont you do something then!

  • Comment removed

  • destroitheduke, that's an interesting comment. Scientists predicted global climate change in the late 1970s, long before anyone thought of a carbon tax.

  • SWEDEN

  • BREAKING NEWS - earth hour activist threatened in PA - click on my name

  • this suck

  • Hong Kong

    HEHE

    I like that!!

  • South Africa was in dark during earth hour, 3 cities, hehe, we went clubbing with candles and all, was a blackout party... pretty cool :)

  • i hope this is just the start. let's make this a once-a-month habit. then, let's tackle other issues like stop mining natural resources for one day or two, stop fishing endangered species, stop game hunting, etc.

  • I wanted to celebrate Earth hour but I went out for my friends birthday. = (

  • Just an hour, and they hardly turn off all the lights. They should do it for a day. heck, i would. At least all night.

  • Al Gore did not participate in Earth Hour. It was too inconvenient.

Al Gore's mansion uses 221,000 kilowatt hours of electricity every year - more than 20 times the national average.

He couldn't even bother to turn off the floodlights illuminating his driveway and his trees.

  • Why don't people stop animal slaughtering and collecting natural resources for an hour rather than switching off lights...:)

  • Because we can always breed cows. Natural resources don't reproduce like animals.

  • because it is hard to find poachers out in the ocean and jungles who are killing off some of our nearly extinct species O.o i hope they do stop though xD

  • THAT'S AWSOME

  • But did every country participate in earth hour?

  • toronto, canada? edmonton, canada?

  • Where is Malaysia, Petronas Twin Towers?

  • and méxico?!!

  • they did shut down but they didnt show it

  • casi nadie apago nadie en mi colonia namas mi casa i la de alado apagaron

  • no importa, muchos lo hicimos y cada granito de arena sirve!! bien hecho!!

  • I did Earth Hour.....it was so cool.....my friends came over to do it with my family....all the lights were off and everything was unplugged....we played cards with flashlights, that was really cool..Waynesville, mo.....WOOOOT!!!!!

  • what's earth hour??

  • earth hour is like where everyone turns off their lights for 1 hour.....i'm not sure if that's an accurate description, but basically we do it for the better of the earth and the environment.

It's pretty cool and I think it's fun.

  • I was watching Resident Evil 2 at this time and all my lights were out, It was awesome :)

  • I think this was great, i had a lot of fun in my second year of this event. This video would have been ten times better if there was music playing throughout the video.

  • i agree. add music and redistribute this for next year?

it was cool to see the collective effect of this awesome night.

  • you forgot to put USA and mexico

  • I think it's breathtaking to see so many people participating in something that I believe is important.

  • WOAH! The Rio de Janeiro landmark is so massively lit, you can see the burnout when it's turned off! 0:31 trippy...

  • Participated- Queens, New York

    WHOOO

  • I also participated - Norway (southern part of Norway).

  • that's bull. Didn't you see the mythbusters episode on energy required to start a lightbulb?

If a 60W bulb is on for an hour, it uses 60W-hours of energy. You're implying that it takes 120W-hours to start the lightbulb. Figuring it takes about half a second to fire up, that's 120W-hours in 1/7200th of an hour. In other words, you're saying that a lightbulb needs 864kW of power to start up. Or about 1170 horsepower. Through a lightbulb. Now who's being foolish?

  • Im not talking about a single light bulb, look im an electrician, im talking about shutting power down on a mass scale, city wide.

And to answer your question no i don't watch myth Busters lol

  • Okay, if you're an electrician, you must be able to tell me what massive elements of a city's infrastructure requires all this start-up energy after the lights go out? It's not a train we're talking about! Light bulbs don't have incandescent inertia!

  • i did, new york

  • i also did.. amsterdam.. netherlands

  • wow!!!yeah

  • I participated. Gold Coast, Australia.

  • I vote earth from Regina, Canada

  • I ALSO PARTICIPATED!! Buenos Aires, Argentina!!!!

  • I also participated. Brooklyn, New York =)

  • I also participated. Sweden!

  • I participated, in Sweden. :)

  • What a moron.... -_-

  • I turned mines off :) In Orlando, FL.

  • I turned on some extra lights just to counter balance the eco-onanaists who actually think they were doing something other than puffing up their own ego.

Man, the smug was really thick last night.

  • How cum no India?I switched off mine...yay...

  • I came up with an idea to support Earth Hour for next year. We upload a video of us dancing in the dark with glowsticks. Then, we talk about Earth Hour in the video or in the video description. Then, we ask others to post a video response doing the same. Hopefully, this will spread through Youtube and the internet, and more people will know about Earth Hour. This would work for other things than dancing, but I think it's neat if we do it anyways. I've uploaded a short video for this. Join me. =]

  • good idea!
