@ecchibanzaii You are a moron......who gives a shit if your mustang has 700bhp, this thing probably has well over 1000 ft-lbs of torque, and if you knew anything about cars, youd know torque is what actually moves your car, not horsepower......
The engine's got great throttle response. You should have put some stacks on the turbo exhaust outlets to amplify the exhaust noise. Nothing like that screaming Jimmy sound.
@kriszml two stroke detroits are built to rev to redline right off from the time they have oil pressure. They have no break in period. Its because you aren't supposed to let them idle due to runaway situations.
In my opinion the smoke is residual assembly lube. If you notice after the engine gets running the steady smoke goes away and the only smoke is when the throttle is pulled wide open and the extra fuel causes smoke until the engine reaches the governed speed and the fuel amount matches the rpm's.
in my diesel tech class my instructor was able to find an 8v71 DD in an old totaled semi, we just got done rebuilding it and will fire it up on Monday! =D
@EpicScandinavian It comes down to intended duty cycle. Sure your 572 v8 can make 725 hp NA but I GUARANTEE you it won't do it towing a load every day for a million miles. These engine weren't weekend toys for showoffs. They were tools that needed to work reliably. The way to accomplish that is mild tuning with large displacement. Yes technology has come far but people need to respect this and stop bitching about only 525hp. Oh and BTW, at this power level it will STILL out-torque your 572.
I agree...buffer screw needs a little tweaking. Rolls a little at an idle too. This is what most veteran truckers would consider "ear candy", a very bad disease indeed. But you have to die of something, so it might as well be from overexposure to loud diesel engine noise and excessive exhaust fumes to end your life in the right way.
@550tommy1 Thats true but it looks like this one came out of a Terex motor scraper ,loader, pit truck, or dozer the paint color is a dead give away you can see it in the background .. I don't think it's a dozer but Terex put the radiator in the rear of their dozers , it's probably a loader or pit truck...
By all means, this is industrial/construction application given the lime green color as you said. I don't think it's out of a Terex dozer, they mainly used 8V71 naturally aspirated engines.
I'm curious to find if this one is a 12V71 or a 92.
@550tommy1 It's a 71 series you can tell by the width of the heads and the tell tale water outlets/manifolds from the inline six down the outside of the heads, giveing you two upper radiator hoses... From what I can see of machinery it came out of it's most likely a loader or pit truck unless they split a scraper ,but yet I see no tires or tracks to give you a clear indication. A V12 92 is two V 6s joined togeather and would make this engine look small !...
...Turbos don't smoke; engine MIGHT have valve seal issues, but, since this is said to be a new rebuild, that's not likely. Bad turbo seals almost always put oil through combustion on intake side, but, even if oil is getting into turbos' exhaust sides, there are no exhaust pipes, so the oil doesn't have time to get hot enough to smoke. There might be some ring-seating time required or oil left in the Roots blower from assembly. Turbos don't smoke.
it depend of your setup your engine can be twin turbos (mounted in parallel) or "Bi-turbos" like c_15 from caterpillar, 1 turbos boost the other one, a low pressure one and a high pressure (mounted in serie)
used a v8 version on a fire water system very similar looking design no turbo unfortunately it will be scrapped as it is over 40 years old and am not able to do a rebuild on it.
BTW the engine shown is a 12V71 T. A second world war designed General Motors engine that just didn't die. It's little brother the 6-71 was used a lot by the Navy during WW2 in landing craft, PPBs, and just about anything that needed moving. Before they went out of production in the early nineties GM made a 24V71, two of the 12's bolted together end to end, that my friend was a sight. "General Motors 2 stroke diesels, the most efficient engines ever built for turning fuel into noise" love 'em.
i have that engine but is modified, 4 variable geometry garret turbos, new bosch fuel pump, new injectors, new valve train, new pistons, new rings, it develops 890HP and 2170 pounds of torque it is mounted in a peterbilt 359 classic, it is a monster
No Engine in the World Has That " Ring" Of a Detroit Diesel. Have to Love the Idle Growl !! A Boat I am Working on Has Twins, 18 to 22 GPH, Its really neat sound when the two Sync up.
@addamochs its not, thats the rev limiter, a fresh rebuild was done on it, so he had to seat the rings and bearings. best part... thats redline at 2500rpm :D
@BOBKB3NZX Duh, my bad. I should known that. but @ about 1 minute in @ idle its doing it too or at least is sounds that way to me. But on the high end makes total sense. I only got to drive an ISX400 around the lower 48 in a Volvo 670.
@addamochs This is a rebuilt engine, the roll at idle is caused by the mechanical governor hunting, there is an adjustment on it called a 'buffer screw' that damps out the idle roll. If that was the governor hunting at high idle, 2100 RPM on these, he needs to adjust the governor droop rod as well cause it's to unstable. BTW, not only do these two stroke critters have two turbos' , they have two blowers, 48 Valves, all exhaust, twin camshafts, wet cylinder liners, and a mean attitude.
@yamahonkawazuki Yep. I liked the sound so much I pulled the supercharged 3800 V6 out of my Bonneville stretched the front end about 5 feet and jammed one of these baby's under the hood. I also removed the radio.
@workensmart lol dont forget the frame youd have to make. the bonnie has 2 half frames. one up front, and one in hte rear. damn you you got me wondering about this now lol. course that endine is about 5ft tall but still
@workensmart my mistake. hell my rx7 has the front and rear i naively assumed the bonnie did too. but agree, that engine would crush it. hell if it didnt. one step on hte go pedal and the 1 car would become a 2 piece car. it would get twisted in half
@yamahonkawazuki Sweet what gen is it? The second generation is my favorite. But If I had the money I'd buy a third gen lol. Yes unit body cars suck when you try to make them into something there not supposed to be.
how much does this engine weights? I have a PBR...Patrol Boat River and would be nice to install one of this...in future may I buy some powerboat catamaran withoust engines and install two of those in!
@fairyheli2 the blower doesnt produce boost on a detroit diesel, it is to blow the exhaust out of the cylinders. a detroit with only a blower is considered naturally aspirated.
@fairyheli2 whoops! i had bad aim when hitting the reply button sorry, the displacement would be 852 cubic inches (if its a 12v71) or 1104 (if its a 12v92). my reply was meant for a comment that read "turbos feeding a roots blower?" or something like that
@TheChevy496 Because on a turbo vehicle the exhaust usually goes out of the rear of the turbo, but since there is no pipe connected it just goes right out. Oh & it was probably just smoking from not running.
God, if you could keep one running long enough... They were state of the art at one time, a very short time, and sounded sooo good under load pulling a hill. Care and feeding of a 12v71 was not cheap by any means. Had to run the rack at least every two weeks just to keep it running. Jake didn't work very well on these either. Never did find a Jimmy that would.
This is an '80s Detroit, just before the 4 strokes took over. You can tell by the valve covers. The governor on this one's a big screwed up...gotta get that buffer spring right, eh?
Why does this not sound like a diesel?

fairyheli2 5 months ago
@fairyheli2 whoops! i had bad aim when hitting the reply button sorry, the displacement would be 852 cubic inches (if its a 12v71) or 1104 (if its a 12v92). my reply was meant for a comment that read "turbos feeding a roots blower?" or something like that

are two strokes more efficient than four strokes because they fire at every cycle?

Why is there smoke coming out of the turbos?
TheChevy496 5 months ago
@TheChevy496 Because on a turbo vehicle the exhaust usually goes out of the rear of the turbo, but since there is no pipe connected it just goes right out. Oh & it was probably just smoking from not running.

o, ok thanks dude, i dont know anything about turbos or diesels i just like em
TheChevy496 5 months ago
@TheChevy496 because your exhaust turns the turbine (turbo)

God, if you could keep one running long enough... They were state of the art at one time, a very short time, and sounded sooo good under load pulling a hill. Care and feeding of a 12v71 was not cheap by any means. Had to run the rack at least every two weeks just to keep it running. Jake didn't work very well on these either. Never did find a Jimmy that would.

sounds like a 350 Chevy engine =)

This is an '80s Detroit, just before the 4 strokes took over. You can tell by the valve covers. The governor on this one's a big screwed up...gotta get that buffer spring right, eh?
