Daisy has an gorgeous face! It's really not that hard to keep them in good shape. 10-15 minutes every day or two. Mine had to be clipped b/c her last owner wouldn't brush her. I'm looking forward to growing her hair out!

@rsrrobinson Sometimes it's the type of food that you feed your dog... a lot of dog food has dyes in it that cause staining (also why sometimes you see staining on parts of a dog that they get at and chew or slobber on.) If you don't get a food without dyes or you do change the food and there is still staining, there is only one product i've heard that works well called Angel Eyes. You put it in your dogs water and yes, it's safe for other animals to drink too.

I have a Shih also. He came to me as a rescue dog. I groom and one day he came in to be groomed. Just one look in his eyes and I knew I had to have him. He has been with me for 4 yrs now. With being a groomer he does get short hair cuts. Just depends on how I'm feeling and what we have planned. If you don't have time to keep up on there brushing keep them short. It's better than having them matted. How would like to walk around with a head full of mats?!!! :) Mats hurt.

I have 2 Shih'Tzu. One if the father, Cecil, and he's almost 5 now. The other is the son, Bandit, and he's almost 3. Both are calm and behave (most of the time). I keep them cut about half their AKC recommended length. Their eyes are the hardest to trim because they HATE me messing around there. I'm hoping to breed Bandit soon if I can find a suitable Shih'Tzu and a suitable owner. I want at least one more to keep the lineage going!

@sopranobabe06 you won't regret it, best dogs EVER. Make sure you ask to meet the parents of the dog, some shih tzu have silky hair and some have rougher hair. Daisy's hair is not silky and matts easily if not constantly brushed. My Teddy has silky hair that rarely tangles. Also ask about health issues to make sure your pup is has a good bloodline!

Shih tzus look way cuter with short hair. The ones with long hair look extremely prissy. Your dog is very cute though, because he's got medium length hair. Any longer, and you won't find yourself with such a cute dog anymore.

Hi relaxnow. I am a groomer and unfortunately so many people don't look after their dog like you do. Also I live in Australia and the dogs go to the beach etc so unfortunately to help the dogs to stay cool and not get sand etc stuck in the hair its easier to clip them short. She is gorgeous - well done !! I do not agree with shaving their ears, tail or their faces. (unless necessary) The faces should be scissored to keep it gorgeous.

Actually, my shih-tzu prefers her hair to be clipped short. Since shih-tzu's run a higher risk to have heat stroke, short hair feels lighter on them. I think it's all dependant on the dog and their master. Cute dog though

I think long hair is a good thing IF you are willing to take the time each day to brush it out. It matts very easily. I am a groomer. I get many more owners who would rather have their dogs shaved, not necessarily short-maybe a #4 all over is cute. It is much easier to maintain.

Of course its great to keep the hair! BUT when people get dogs they know nothing about and dont take the time to groom them the humane thing to do is to keep the hair short.

The people I know are horrible shih tzu owners, they never brush their dog, even though I bought them a slicker and a steel comb. So I suggested they just cut the hair short and its still in bad contition!

I wish people were more like you but the sad truth is they are not.

I agree they do look really nice with a brushed full coat but the reality is not many pet owners take the time to brush thier dog out and comb it out daily. I will not put a dog through undue torture in my groom shop because the owner prefers the dog long but won't touch it inbetween grooms... Not fair to the dog.

A dogs hair is not any different than yours. If you do not brush it on a very regular basis it will have to be cut off! A groomer is not responsible for the neglect of any dogs hair. A groomer can only do so much and the rest is up to you!

I so agree with you, as I groomer I am quite shocked on owners who want these breeds skinned, it's a real pity. these breeds have such silky hair, I love working with and the Top knot is like adding icing to cake.

Crazykids...as a groomer you should also know that Shih Tzu's also have different texture hair. I have 2 of them and I brush them several times a day--everyday and one still matts like crazy and has to be cut down low; so somethings are not by choice when some people shave their dog. Also, they may like the shaved look better and you like the long look. It's all about preference and no one is greater or more less than the other. Let be open minded here.

A conditioning spray called Quicker Slicker is a life saver! Just as recommended, you should DEF comb out daily, but this stuff is the best to get out little mat's caused by your tzu chewing on one another, LOL!!

My baby puppy is a boy, so he likes to "ruff around" and play outside with baseballs.

My dog for some reason has naturally curly, crimpy hair, when we brush it, it's that way, and when we don't, it's that way. Also, his hair on his nose grows up, into his eyes, and then he has to itch. If I let it grow out for awhile, do you think this problem will turn out to be okay? Or do you think I should keep cutting his fur short like a baby? I love it both ways. Thanks.

I shaved my dogs hair because when we left to go to the store my dogs hair (when it was long) got caught in out fence for an hour. They do NOT look horrible shaved. They are actually really cute when they are shaved. And when they have long hair they look like every other dog most shih tzus i have seen are shaved.

It's very rare that a shih tzu looks as good when shaved as with it's normal coat. I also see lots of shaved shih tzu and 1 of 20 I actually think look good.

Groomers are often presented with matted Shih Tzus and have no choice but to give the dog a short haircut. It's not as if we're deliberately going against the owner's wishes. But we can only work with what you give us. If you brush your dog thoroughly on a regular basis, we can do a longer haircut...

Groomers do not typically disregard dog owners' instructions. If they did, none of us would have jobs. If a groomer cannot give your dog a longer haircut it's because your dog has matting, not because the groomer wants to override your choice of haircut. DAisy now has a brother named DASH. He chews on her hair and ripps out her ponytail! having "chewy pup" had mattted Daisy so she went in for a puppy cut. the groomer did a good job we cut her coat to 3 inches BUT THEY CUT OFF HER PONY TAIL AND WHISKERS! A puppy cut is one length all over-just like a puppy no matter how much is cut off, a trim is just that -a trim.

I am very sorry but you are not correct on your terms here. A puppy cut is Trimming only the paw pads, sanitary area, and sometimes the corners of the eyes. That is it! And Eye lashes are not a good thing when it comes to dogs, especially Shih Tzu. They have very buggy eyes and the more hair around them the more problems they have with eye infections and Glaucoma. You really shouldn't give advice on grooming unless you know what you are talking about. And you should not use human shampoo on dogs

I totally agree! Keep the hair on our Shih Tzu! It takes a lot of work though, so if you don't want to take the time to groom them yourself almost every day... don't even try to keep them in a full coat. I keep my two boys in almost a full coat, but no top knot.. they are boys after all!

I AGREE!!! Just got one 2 months ago, my Asha boo! I brush her and keep her face clean and WILL be keeping her hair long for sure! I work at a dog daycare and fell in love with the breed! The silly thing is everyone that brings their shih-tzu to my work shaves them!!! Crazy people!

i have a shih tzu she is nearly 5 months i have trimmed the hair above the nose, its not long enough to to tie it back but short enough to keep getting in her eyes i want to grow her hair long as it will be better to manage and i wont have to keep messing near her face as she does not like it much ,i have to clean her eyes 3 times a day as she gets a little mucas on her eyes and her eye area is nearly always wet, do you have any advice she is my first shih tzu yours looks lovely.

congratulations on your new girl! My advice is no trimming any head hair at all, but since you have already trimmed the top of the nose, you can still grow out the rest. I know the eyes are runny but that gets better after about 9 months of age. Always keep the hair in a small rubber band (i use a coated one by goody found at walgreens for little babys. be sure to brush her at night befor bed with a good pin brush with bent tips so it pulls out the mats in the under coat.

Thank you! She is 1 year old. We are looking for a chocolate or golden male boyfriend to breed her with, she needs a mate..she's humping the cat! Daisy the SWEETEST little dog. We keep her in a puppy cut so it's easy to manaage a daliy brushing and still let her run around in the wet grass here.

Walk daisy 2x daily, dog park 3 imes a week even in the rain w. rain coat. sure she get's dirty, bathe her my self once a week and use a good conditioner and leave in de tangler. I dry her with an absorbent hair towel. There is a way to do the topknot and keep it loose so it does not hurt. I prefer long hair, but if you don't have the patience or time for it you will do what is convenient for you. It's your choice. Most importantly enjoy your lovely little shih tzus.

I've Never cut Daisy's hare, except for her feet which need trimming every 4 to weeks

The lashes will grow long if you tell the groomer to sop cutting the hair! Tell you groomer to only trim feet and rear of the dog (keep the poop deck clear)= )

The Shih tzu ans Lasa Apso have a "crysanthemum" face and it's akward growing them out after their faces have been shaved, but well worth it as you can see.
