this video is so lame. the wines...the places...he just shows the average and low taste of my country and takes it as the core of it...Portugal isnt this. cheers.
the herbal liquor, licor Beirao was originally developed as a tonic for the sick, particularly stomach maladies... i believe 30 different seeds and herbs are used in the distillation process... it generally packs a modest 22% proof...
also Lourinhã, located in western Portugal, is one of the few brandy-making areas, besides Cognac and Armagnac, that have received appellation status... just like the French, the Portuguese are big producers and consumers of grape brandy...
but i'm surprised the host omitted the infamous aguardente, other wise know as "fire water"... this Portuguese "moonshine" is distilled in rural Portugal using rudimentary equipment and technology...it's distilled from a wild berry of the strawberry bush (not to be mistaken for strawberries)...it generally has a proof beetween 80 to 90%...very strong stuff, drink of the peasants, but the Portuguese also put it in their coffee...
Portugal is also a paradise for wine lovers, as the history of the vine runs deep in Portugal...the appellation system of northern Portugal was created nearly two hundred years before that of France, in order to protect its superior wines from inferior ones. but what makes Portuguese wines unique are the dozens of grape varieties found only in Portugal...
for the random history lover, Portuguese wines from the island of Madeira were the only wines to be consumed by the early American colonists, as all other wine producing nations were prohibited from exporting their wines to the colonies... the king of England, Charles II was at war with almost every western european nation at the time with the exception of Portugal... his Portuguese wife, Catherine of Braganza then facilitated the importing of Portuguese wine to the colonies...
Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Hancock, Alexander Hamilton and Ben Franklin were all winos and that wine was Portuguese wine...the glasses toasted at the declaration of independence were filled with Portuguese wine... how's that for a little history?
Look who's having a good time right now. Nun-other than that famous Traveling Celebrity Coin of Coin's Euro Trip. In this Episode he recommends good alcoholic beverages.
The red beer is not made of strawberrie! It's normal beer mixed with "groselha", currant syrup made with gooseberry.
