one of the most beautiful melancholic melody i'd ever heard, both ron and chris are great.. and the words are deep, it's not as simple as saying the words i-love-you.. oh yeah it's gold in them hills!!
the first time I heard this song was because I though that is od COLDPLAY and the voice of Ron Sexsmith is close to Will Champion and I though that it was him...
Ron played at the Bush Hall, London in February wih Fran Healy and Graham Gouldman. I can walk to Bush Hall in 3 minutes from my flat but, SOLD OUT! He is playing one concert in London in April at the Barbican Theatre, SOLD OUT! (bit of a pattern forming here) Can someone tell whoever is his management is that Ron is far better than you seem to think he is. We do have bigger venues here in London.
@MegaCrasher2000 Ron wrote it, the original is available on youtube as well which I much prefer to this version. This version is pretty much Ron's original with the addition of a misfitting beat and a low freq bass. They're both great musicians but imho it didn't really work out here.
One of my teachers once said, that poems don't have to completly correct, so maybe it's 'them hills' because it's sounds better or it's easier to sing :P
@crusadersoldier I don't think its a competition. Good art is about communication to the soul; wonderful art moves one's soul for a lifetime by its honesty.
That Ron guy does pretty well. Obviously Chris is better but hes pretty solid. Must be like acting with Daniel Day Lewis, you might give the performance of your life but hes always a step ahead!
on the contrary actually, ron's imperfect voice is a perfect fit to this tune. it hasnt the refinement that can hide a certain pretense, and that enables it to catch you off guard and really let you in.
He sounded really different in Whatever It Takes with Michael Buble, tho. He sounded more sure of himself there. This song he sounded less confident...less sure. But Gold In Them Hills is really sticking in my mind, I catch myself humming it every now & then. I guess you are right about that imperfect tone letting me in. :)
I think Ron is a wonderful songwriter. I stumbled on his name from Michael Buble's new CD and absolutely loved the song he & Michael Buble duetted (Whatever It Takes).
Ron's got this writing gift, but his voice isn't very strong. This song needed a distinct voice to carry it. Chris Martin supplied that voice and made it unique.
I wish Ron's stuff is more available in my location. It's good stuff!
Elton John recognized Ron Sexsmith's talent during an interview w/ Elvis Costello on his 'Spectacles' series. Apparently he's one of EJ's favorite songwriters. Bottom line is that video is making people with little talent stars simply because they look good on video.

Britney Spears has probably sold more albums than both of them - so there - that means i am right some how and Britney is better - because album sales determines how good your music is... uh huh
maybe your right personally i like Chris Martin more, because he doesnt have this accent. how Ron says ´´ Start´´ is just terrible for my opinion, Chris´s voice is clearer. And for the record Coldplay has sold more records. For as far as i know ofcourse
Ron has a superb style of singing. Ironically, Chris seems to be copying Ron's style (-at least, unconsciously) on his verse. They both sound great to me, and harmonise very well.
What I like, is how Ron communicates with his singing- the 'looseness' seems to show vulnerability, and makes it sound authentic/genuine- compared to some bland but accurate chart/pop vocalists. Of course some people simply won't like him- that's OK, this is art, we all have our own preferences, and there is no definite right and wrong. (Use of throat for example, is personal choice, and pitching can be flexible, eg-vibrato, glissando, microtones, etc)
Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young: None of those guys ever made a single contribution to modern music because they didn't have traditionally strong voices, either.
My point is he wrote the song. I would assume that is a pretty important contribution to the song, no? There's another version of the song without Chris. I would have to say Ron's contribution outweighs that of Chris's, but that's just me. For the record, Chris Martin is a huge Ron Sexsmith fan.
I love both singers, but their voices don't really mesh. Ron's very laid back and sings very loose. Chris is dead on with tone and timing. It makes their harmonizing a bit rough. I still like the song and have got a lot of miles out of it. I just find myself singing ron's part more like chris would. lol.
This song would be better if Chris Martin sung all by himself without that miserable bugger! :) Keep the video the same just get rid of old misery guts!!
Seriously, just shut up. Not everyone knows which song is written by who, so why would go off on one at someone for having an opinion that was perhaps a little unfounded. But he wasn't necessarily saying that it wasn't written by him, he just commented on the fact that it is not his usual style. So just grow up.
Chris is not only better singer, he is pretty much sexier!
