i wonder if she can be the next Yuna Kim.. her spins and step sequences are joy to watch, but she needs to improve her jumps if she wishes to go on to the next level.
If Nagasu can end the flutzing and be more consistent, she will certainly be a MAJOR threat on the international scene. Her spins are the best in the world today, and she has that inherent joy that Kwan had. I can't wait to see her improve over the coming years.
Aww...I remember a couple years ago she went over to my sister's hosue and made eggs fro us because my sister was too lazy.... and getting a free pineapple sorbet at her paren'ts restaurant. it was nice seeing her fulfill her dream on tv.
poor thing she's the cutest looking person with a nosebleed. she skated flawlessly but degree of difficulty not at same level as the leaders. perhaps she will be America's best hope for gold.
@dhom100 No it definitely was. The only thing is she did a triple lutz double toe combo, but it was actually planned to be a triple triple. Her difficulty was up there. Her PCS is what brought her down here.
the reason why mirai has the most beautiful biellman spin because she has a short body unlike the others got the long body that's why very difficult to the to spin..
@iFenceU whaaat? Have you watched the competition? Yu-Na Kim took 1st. I love Mirai but come on, she's nowhere near Kim's Level. Asada landed three 3As , that's why she won silver. Rochette had better jump and edge quality and most importantly, mature artistry. I don't see any problem with this podium.
Mirai is a talented skater and placing 4th at the OG at 16 is beyond fantastic. I hope she becomes more consistant (did not make the world team in 2011). I'm looking forward to see her in Sochi.
@gabb9262 i did watch the competition. I don't contest that Kim Yu-Na earned 1st place. However, it is my opinion (only my opinion, so don't get mad) that Mirai Nagasu should have placed higher
@iFenceU I do respect your opinion, but it just seem to me that at every OG people are trying to create a controversy regarding the rankings. Mirai did amazingly well, but her childish joy and exuberance was immature for Carmen, which is a very dramatic role (I know she was just 16). Mirai's placement and scores were entirely correct and appropriate imho. It was a very strong field and there simply wasn't room at the top for her.
Then again, I LOVE Mirai. Not trying to bash her at all.
@elenavlada piss off. she's an excellent skater with gorgeous posture, flexibility and speed. oh and for the record, she's not heavy looking so lay off the marijuana while commenting on really good figure skaters, will you?
@elenavlada haha i'll admit that's funny, slightly harsh though because she did everything but the jumps elegantly-jumps aren't her thing her spiral sequence was very graceful. Much better then Kim Yu-na's zero extension positions
@elenavlada and with the jumps her posture was perfect going into them and good flow through them just not much elevation on the second jumps in her combinations
She has very clean jump and it's nice to see. She doesn't quite have the height that Yuna Kim has but she makes up for it with her flexibility. I think Mirai is better than Mao,personally, because her jumps are better....I mean Mao's triple axels are kind of under rotated...and without it she doesn't have many jumps down. Mirai is going to grow to be a greater skater.
Mirai's spin is more like a layback haircutter- the skate blade is right near her head, the leg is flexed sharply, and she transitions into a Biellmann quite effortlessly using both hands.
Caroline's pearl has the leg more extended, so her head in the layback is closer to the back of the knee or her hamstring. She needs the strength of both arms to extend the attitude leg, while a haircutter needs only one hand to support it.
Both have a superficial similarity because of their extreme laybacks.
This is so awesome. Mirai is amazing. Poor thing she got a nosebleed! I read an interview she did after the short and she said that the air in Canada was drier than California. She said that she had nosebleeds a lot while she was in Vancouver.
@onice331 Actually, i think she should have been on the podium at this Olympics. I believe the only reason she didn't make it was because the judges took pity on Joannie Rochette, when clearly, Mirai had a much better skate. :)
Mirai deserved much higher scores, and she would have gotten them if she'd skated in the later groups. If it were up to me she would have been in 3rd or 4th after the SP and certainly not BEHIND Rachael Flatt who benefited from a later skate imo.
@faeryquene Yes, of course...but I think Joannie Rochette being in third after the LP had a lot more to do with Mirai not medaling. The judges definitely played PC there, but I can't really blame them. Mirai's technical score in the LP beat Joannie's by more than 3 points, but in the "Program Components" score (the more interpretive of the scores), Joannie out-performed Mirai by 8 points. I can't help it...I feel like the judges gave Joannie extre credit for performing well under stress.
I really love this and think Mirai should have won the bronze medal, in fact I think she DID win it but Joannie's tears and truly tragic story moved the judges to award it to her instead. In any case if Mirai thinks her time hasn't come yet look out world when it does. She is awesome!! So young, performing on the world's biggest stage with a nose bleed yet and still delivers. WOW!
@kwansansog I think Joannie won the Bronze medal fair and square and i love Mirai. Mirai was too far back after the SP to take the Bronze. Joannie's tragic story had nothing to do with her winning a medal. She just skated slightly better then Mirai overall.
@dsfddsgh Arggggggggggggghhhhhh I forgot about the short program factor. I guess it was kind of a toss up but either way it's great. Joannie skating as beautifully as she did and Mirai's sensational 1st appearance on that level...Joannie DID deserve the bronze and these two young women did so well that I think it best to just enjoy than argue:):):) And I will concede that while the difference was slight as you said Joannie earned it fair and square.
@kwansansog I have to say i've watched a lot of skating in the last 30 plus years but that night was maybe the greatest night of skating in Olympic history for the Ladies competition for a final group. Not even one fall between the six skaters.
I think I've just witnessed Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen and Shizuka Arakawa being merged, getting a new body with the cutest smile in the world and skating a beautiful program :D
P.S. It might be just me... but was that Bielman or Pearl? I think it looked much like Caroline Zhang's pearl ^^
@Uhlanga Well, a Bielmann is the part that's the upright catchfoot, Caroline does it too at the end of her layback. The Pearl is only when Caroline is in a layback and a catchfoot, once she pulls it up it's a Bielmann so Mirai sort of does a 1-handed pearl, it's a variation on what's called a haircutter.
