I still love the declaration of independence. Thats what the war was about. However, I do wish we had won the war. My family lost a lot in that (land, money, etc.). As a great great great nephew of Gen A P Hill, I am glad that some of us are still fighting for the cause.

I looked back in my old American History book from school, and it actually said that state's rights was the main cause of the Civil War, and that Lincoln freed the slaves only as a punishment for the succeeding states. I don't think it's the history books, but people just not paying attention in school. Since the abolishment of slavery and the Civil War happened at the same time, our brains just put the two together.

Good song. I am Southern through and through, but wondered about my daughter. Youngsters dont get the same education about the War of Northern Aggression we got. Played this song for her today. I no longer have any doubts about her. Lord blessed me with a Southern daughter.

that is beond true, im only 14 (not 28 like my profile says) and my history teacher kept pushing in slavery as the cause, when in fact is was pretty much about economics (altho slavery was a reason, they 4get that more than half of the south didnt own slaves)

I've been in many debates over the cause of the Civil War and I've looked up countless sources over the percentage of southerners who even owned slaves

Out of all the percentages I found they ranged from 4-10%.

And Lincoln was a racist himself, he didn't give a damn about slaves he just wanted to preserve his precious, tyrannical 'Union'

@ruvvjub I looked up the 1860 census and came up with 5.67% Not only the majority but the VAST majority did not own slaves. The federal govt was more than happy to leave slavery in place forever (Corwin Amendment) but they wanted to impose very high tariffs (the Morrill Tariff) which would cripple the South's economy while lining the pockets of Northern industrialists.
