  • Ok. It's back to the "by-ear." It takes longer, but stays longer. Thanks for all your great vids! They're an inspiration, I watch them often. Pianist-at-large-in-charlottenc

  • I've seen quite a few, but this is your finest! Got a score of this?

  • @arrowpierced

Not of the way that I approach this piece. My take of this music is a combination of the original transcription and the Red Hot Peppers recording from 1927.

  • In case you improvised the side walk blues, the sheet music is not available, but do you have sheet of the music that you are playing here?

  • @ngjjang

I originally learned this tune from the Melrose Jelly Roll collection. The feel that I put into this studio " take" came from the Red Hot Peppers recording that Jelly Roll did in 1927.

  • Where can I buy a cd/cds of the songs you're playing here online, please? I looked online but didn't see all these songs and I would like to have something to play in my car cd player. Thank you.

  • On our website under music you can see what is out there. If something interests you that you cannot find by googling, you can contact me for info. There are some things available on ebay including "Eubie Blake Introducing Jim Hession"(EBM6). Also "Rock Me In The Cradle" is available on several sites. I do not keep up with what is out there.

  • By the way, thank you for your interest and support!

  • Thank you for asking about Jim's piano music. Within the next few weeks three new CD's will be available. Two are solo CD's: "Giants of Stride" Vol.1 and Piano Power Plays Vol.2 in a series called: "Playing With Fire". To follow those solo discs will also be "Giants of Stride 2" and a Jelly Roll Morton disc is finished and will be released later this year. Also to be released with the first two CD's is "Vignettes" duo & trios with Jim and New Orleans jazz musicians.

  • All right. I want them ALL. All my life, I avoided the word jazz like the plague but then I got hooked on Scott Joplin. After that, I discovered the Jelly Roll & James P. Johnson. Then I found you on youtube and found Eubie, etc. I know I'm probably a minority, but I wish you had all these recordings online also available on cd. I really enjoy your work.

  • fantastic, anbd the comments above shiow the limitations of the sound coming out of a computer v the real thig, which returns me to my beseeching for a cd , so those of us that can't get to new irleans can savour the sound you relly produce, the way we can hyman on his references cd

  • What a nice rendition. Your precise style is quite impressive. Five stars. - Well, the sound of the piano is indeed sharp, but there's nothing wrong with it. I've played on some pianos which had stuck keys and were out of tune, but as long as you can improvise around th deadspot it's ok for me.

  • As you probably tell, the original cut of this Morton classic is playing loudly in my head as I improvise this solo. Long live Jelly Roll!

  • Performance is great. Piano has a horrible metallic sound. Morton would never play such a crappy piano.

  • Glad you enjoyed the Sidewalk Blues. On this side of YouTube the piano sounds like what it is: A Yamaha C3 in tune in a top recording studio. Prior to the 1970's emergence of electronic keyboards, we acoustic pianists always had to perform on whatever instrument was at the location. In the 20's Morton controlled what piano he used; in his later years and earlier years I'm sure he got stuck with some lemons. A hazard of the profession. Thanks again and keep listening.
